RAIL-JOINT.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application filed December 9, 1914. Serial No. 876,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATT E. MATTSON :a citizen of the United States, residing at Rossburg, in the county of Aitkin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints and its object is to produce an interlocking joint for railway rails that will obviate the pounding of the rolling stock as it passes over the joint.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which V Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of my improved joint. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a section taken on line 4.4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 isa perspective view of one of the meeting ends of a rail. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the opposite meeting end. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a connecting bolt employed. Fig. 8 is a cross section through the same.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the-reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the meeting ends of a pair of railway rails. The rail 1 is formed with a shoulder 3 in its web and the tread of the rail is beveled as at 4 immediately above said shoulder and remote from the shoulder the tread of the rail is formed with a projection 5 which extends beyond the end of the rail. The end face of the rail 1 is formed with a tongue 6, the-upper face of which is formed with a shoulder 7; the lower face 8 of the tongue is beveled toward its free extremity 9, which is rounded, and said lower face is formed with a notch 10.
The tread of the rail 2 is formed with a beveled portion 5 which when in position abuts the projection 5 of rail 1 and with a projection L which abuts the beveled portion 41 of rail 1 and which rests upon the shoulder 3. of that rail. A cavity 11 is formed in the end of rail 2 and in this portion 11 a shoulder 12 is formed and diagonally opposite thereto a notch 13 is formed.
An opening 14 is formed transversely in the rail 2 and the same communicates with the cavity 11. To join the rail ends the tongue 6 is inserted into the cavity 11 until the shoulder 7 thereof engages the shoulder 12 of rail 2; the notch 10 of said tongue is now directly above the notch 13 in this rail as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The projection 41, 5 now abut the beveled portions 4, 5 respectively and the projection 1 rests upon the shoulder 3. The bolt 15, which is formed with apertures 16 in its threaded portion, is now inserted in the aperture 1a of the rail 2 when it will engage the notched portions 10, 13 of the tongue and rail 2 respectively and retain said members in fixed relation. An apertured nut 17 is now screwed upon the bolt 15 and pin 18 passed through said nut and bolt to retain them in position.
What is claimed is The herein described rail joint comprising interlocking rail ends each formed with a beveled tread termination, the web of one rail being formed with a shoulder to receive one termination of the opposite rail web, a tongue carried by one rail end and formed with a shoulder upon one edge with a notch diagonally opposite the same upon the opposite edge, the opposite rail end being formed with a central opening and an interior notch, said opening being adapted to receive said tongue, a shoulder formed in said central opening for engagement with the shoulder of said tongue and a connecting bolt'adapted to be projected through the web of one rail for frictional engagement with the notched portion thereof and with the notched pornesses.
