To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, ROBERT E. L. JAN- NEY and EDMUND P. Kinks, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, and Alliance, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uncoupling Devices, of which the following is-a specification.
Our invention relates to car couplers and hasparticular reference to a'novel coupler operating device.
In the application of car couplers to passenger cars it is requisite that the knuckle lock shall be operated from the bottom, and that means shall be provided for operating such lock either from the car platform or from the side of the car. In our device the coupler may be operated either from the side of the car or from the car platform, each operation being independent of the other.
This is preferable it being particularly de-,
sirable that the operation from the side of the car may be. independent of the platform operating means inasmuch as if the operation from the side of the car required the ac tuation of the platform operating means, it would be dil'licult due to the necessity of actuating several levers, beveled gears, etc. It will also be noted that in our construction the levers on either side may be actuated without movement of the lever on the opposite side. This is due to the peculiar foam of he eyes at the ends of the operating ro s.
A further advantage is in that the coupler lock maybe placed inlock-set position whereupon the operating handle at the side of the car or the handle on the platform may return to nornral-position, only a portion of thelock-lifting mechanism remaining elevated as an indicator of the condition of the.
lock.

ings it will be seen that beneath the car platform 10 are provided sills 11 to which is secured a carry iron 12 supporting a car coupler 13. Depending from the carry iron are brackets 14, having an open ended slot 15 therein,which open end is normally closed by bolts 15 Depending from the coupler is a rod 17 the upper end of which engages.
the coupler lock (not shown), the lower end being provided with an eye 16 within which the end of a rod 18 engages, the engaging end being bent in the form of an S, as best shown in Fig. 2. The other end of the rod 18 is likewise bent into S shape and accommodates a transverse rod or rock bar 19 having a central eye 20 formed therein. as best shown in Fig. 2; This eye is seated in the concave portions of the S and is so arranged that it may move freely in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 3, but a movement in a counter clockwise direction will likewise move the rods 18 and 17. The rod 19 is seatedin the recess 15 in brackets 14 and is adapted for horizontal sliding movement therein. The ends of the rod 19 are provided'with eyes 21 vertically disposed with which the bent end of a hand operating rod 22 engages. This rod extends to the side of the car and is held by a bracket 23,-the rod terminating in a handle the peculiar formation of the engaging poitions of the rods 19 and 22. The opposite end of the rod 19 is engaged in a similar manner by a rod 25 terminating in afbend 26, this rod being, however, provided with an angular extension 27 having an eye 28 therein, which eye is engaged by a rod 29 connected to a bell crank 30 keyed to a shaft 31. which shaft carries a beveled gear 32. This gear meshes with the similar gear 33 fast'on post 34, the upper end of which is adapted to be engaged by the swinging lever 35, as is shown.
It will be seen that the handle 24 may be lifted to actuate the coupler look without interfering with the rod 25 or the platformoperating mechanism; that after the lock has been placed in lock-set position the operating handle 2% will return to its normal position, the rod 18, however, remaining in elevated position as an indication of the condition of the lock; that the platform operating mechanism may be used to lift'the lock and that the rod 22 and handle 24 will not be moved during such actuation; that after the lock has been placed in lock-set position the platform operating rod may be returned to normal, the rod 18 remaining elevated to indicate the condition of the lock.-
It will further be noted that the coupler is free to'move forward or backward or to swing sidewise without interfering in any manner with the operating mechanism or without possibility of the lock being accidentally operated due to such coupler movement.
It is obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown, and such modifications as are within the scope of our claims we consider within the spirit of our invention.
We claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a lock-operating rod extending. longitudinally of the car and having an;
S-shaped bend in one end, a transverse rod having an eye, said first rod overlying and engaging the eye in said second rod, whereby said rods are permitted relative movement through at least 90 but are positively rotatively connected in an opposite direction, said rods being supported at their junction beneath the coupler with provision for freedom of movement relative to the support, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a coupler having a depending lock-operating rod, a longitudinal rod having a connection permitting oscillation between said lock-operating and said longitudinal rods, a transverse rod, said transverse rod being mounted'for horizontal sliding movement in a longitudinal direction, and means extending to the side of the car and connected to said transverse rod for imparting movement to said rods, substantially as described.

4. An uncoupling device for car couplers comprising a coupler-lock operating-rod extending longitudinally of thecar, an endwise movable rock bar extending transversely of the car and connected intermediate of its ends to the coupler-lock operatingrod and provided (at its ends with eyes, bearings for the rock bar, said bearings being mounted independently of the car coupler and the rock bar being capable of endwise movementthrough said bearings, and operating-rods extending to the respective sides of the car and provided with eyes hooked into the respective eyes of the rock bar and constituting rotative connections therewith, each of said rotative connections beingpositive in one direction but permitting limited rotation in the opposite direction.
5. In combination with a coupler, a lock operating rod extending longitudinally of the car, a transverse rod having an eye in each end and near its middle, said longitudinal rod being connected to said intermediate eye by means of an S-bend, and rods connected to the eyes in the ends of the transverse rod and providing a knuckle joint, said rods extending from said transverse rod to the side of'the car, substantially as described.
6. An uncoupling device for car. couplers comprising an endwise movable rock bar extending transversely of the car, a lock lifting crank arm carried by the rock bar and intermediate the ends of the rock bar,
the connection betwen the rock bar and the crank arm being such as to effect upward movement of the latter in one direction of rotation of the rock bar and to permit rotation of the rock bar in the opposite direction independently of the crank arm, and operating devices for the respective ends of the rock-bar, each operating device havcrank arm being such as to efiect upward movement of the latter in one direction of rotation of the rock bar and to permit rotation of the rock bar in the opposite direction independently of the crank arm, an operating device, and a connection between the rock bar and the operating device to effect rotation thereof in one direction by the operation of the operating device and to permit rotation of the rock bar in the opposite direction independently of the operation of the operating device.
