Application ined Augast 5, 1915. semaine. 43,722.
Sr., a citizen ofthe United States, and resi.
:dent of Chicago, in the county vof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new f and usefullmprovements in Dump-Cars, of
which the following isa specification. My invention relates to railway cars and fhas particular reference to anovel dump 'car'V so'v arranged as to permit the' discharge of the entire load to eitherside of the ear.
It is desirable'inthe handling of coal, sand, gravel, and other granular material to provide means for dumping the contents of va car. Preferably such means should provide for dumping the entire load, and while this is not uncommon, I believe it to be new -to provide. means forl dumping the entire load to either side of the car utilizingv the weight ofI the material itself'for effecting the movement of the dumping doors.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to -the accompanying drawings wherein- K Figure 1 is an end elevationofa gondola vear to.v which inventionplias been apv plied;y Fig. 2fis` a transverse sectionthrough the carfshowing 'thelfdoors in l normalposition; Fig.v 3. isfajview similarhto FigA 2, 'showing the firstl sten in thefdumpingaetion; Fig. 4 is-a lsimilar"vie-wf'showing the completed dumping movement; and Fig.v 5 is a section on the line 5"-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to thedrawings it will be seen that the car'includes center sills 10 onwhich are mounted needle beams 11 serving to support the side Walls 12 of the car. The oor of the car is composed substantially wholly of doors 13 which extend from side to side of the car and are provided with a central pivot 111 which operates in a slot 15 in a bracket 16 which is mounted on center sill cover plate 17. The ends of the doors may be normallyY supported by rack bars 18 movable in a horizontal plane beneath the doors by means of a pinion 19 mounted on a shaft 20 extending to the end of the car and to which a crank 21 may be fitted. It will be seen that the doors are. normally held in a position in which the pivot 14 occupies the upper portion of the slot 15. At each side of the pivot and secured to the doors are brackets right Yhand central 'shaft loe-ing'*lit-ld' a ofthe slots Y15.
having slots 23therein. PinsQllfare seated `1n 'the `slots -23,'the pins :being rigidly secured toa vertically-lmovableY rack 'slidable 1n a fixed p'ath'in a housing or bearing '26v which `is secured tothe centersills. "A Vpinion 27 engages the "rack bar, all of the "'pinions'in a line being mountedon a'shaft V28 which extends to the'end .othejcar -and carries a star wheel29.
Itjlwi'll be understood in the operationof the device thatone rack-bar lis"'i'nte1i1d`edto moveupwardly while` the other move'sgdownwardly. 'I have therefore provided means for securing this action, asimple exemplifi! cation of which means is shown in Figl and comprises a'hand lever "30 and lir'i'kfs-fl` 32 the link 32V being rotatable lonpthe shaft While adjusting the "paw'l's" 1it I'will be` s'en that the shafts may bev moved -in=thesanielor opposite directions, asfdesired. Y
' The -V operationjis asV follows: Assuming rotatiom and theH "eft-` hand* centralfshiift being free to'revolve, it vwillloee seen'ft-hat 'the doors willihave a 'tendency ltoj'I-*otate about the right hand `pinuli'gand 'this'-I rotation will be positiveV because offthe` super posed load on the door to the left ofsuch pivot. The doors-will :then drop tothe position of Fig. 3; 'that"is, tothe Vpoint-'where the door pivots 14 occupy the lower portion The load having started to discharge, the preponderance will be to the left of the pivot, and upon releasing the right hand central shaft the door will continue to tilt until it reaches the position of Fig. 4. If this should not occur, the movement of the door may be made positive by actuating the handle 30 and arranging the pawls in such manner that one rack bar is moved upward and the other downward. If it be desired to dump the load on the opposite side, the same steps will be taken with the opposite parts.
Obviously the instrumentalities for effecting this result may be changed in many particulars and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to theconstruction shown and described.
I claim:
1. In a dump car, the combination of car walls and a door extending substantially entirely across the width of the car, a floating pivot for the door, 'said pivot being located at substantially the center of the car, and means located at each side of the center of the door a portion of which means is adapted to act as a pivot for the door upon the releasing of one edge thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a railway car, the combination of side walls and a floor, said floor being composed of a series of single doors which eX- tend from side to side of the car, a vertically shiftable pivot for each of said doors, the pivot being located at substantially the transverse center of the door, supporting means for the edges of the doors, and vertically movable pivots located at each side Y of the center of each door, substantially as described.
3. In a railway car, thc combination of a center sill, side walls and Hoor, said floor being composed of a series of single doors extending from side to side of the car and provided .with a transversely-centralized pivot, said .pivot being mounted in a vertioally-elongated bearing, and verticallymovable stops mounted at each side of the Vdoor and adapted for vertical reciprocation in opposite directions whereby said doors maybe tilted vand the load'd'ischared to .either side of the car, substantially as described.
.4. In a. railway car, the combination of side walls and a floor, said floor being com- .posed of a series of single doors extending from side to side of the car, means at the outer edges of the doors for normally maintaining the doors in position, a central pivot shafts whereby to simultaneously move said rack bars in opposite directions, substantially as described.
5. In a. railway car, the combination of side wallsv and a 1ioor, sa id floor being coinposed of series of doors which extend from side to side of the car and each door being provided with a central, shifting pivot, vertically-recip-rocable members located at each side of the pivot, means for actuating said members and for releasing one or both thereof as required, the parts being arranged whereby one of said members may be released and the door be permitted to pivot on the other member through distances vdetermined by said shiftable pivot, substantially as described.
G. In a dump car, the combination of side walls and a floor, the floor being composed of a series of single doors which extend from side to side of the car, vertically shiftable supporting devices for said doors, onev of said devices being located on each side of-the longitudinal center of the car, said doors being pivoted on said supporting devices, whereby when one of said supporting devices is lowered, the door .will pivot upon the other of said supporting devices, substantially as described.
7. In a dump car, the combination of side walls and a floor, the floor being composed of a series of single doors which extend from side to side of the car, vertically shiftable supporting devices for said doors, one of said devices being located on each side of the longitudinal center of the car, said doors being pivoted on said supporting devices, Whereby when one of said supporting devices is lowered, the door will pivot upon the other of said supporting devices, and means located at the outer edges of the door for rigidly supporting the door when in closed position, substantially as described.
