Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 18, 1915. Serial No. 34,849.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RONALD B. SMITH,
a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Valve-Gear, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to valve gears and has for an object the provision of an improved arrangement whereby a valve may be opened to the usual extent and held open an appreciable time.
Another object of the invention is to produce a valve gear or mechanism for multiplying the movement of the valve shaft whereby a cam occupying a predetermined number of degrees of a circle may open and close the valve and also "provide a period when the valve is held stationary in its maximum open position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a valve gear in which an easy acting cam is utilized and a multiplying mechanism is provided so that the degree of movement caused by the cam may be reduced to a minimum while producing an opening of the valve per 86 equalingthe usual opening.
In carrying out the objects of the invention the same may be applied to gas engines, puppet valves or to valves in any desired place and for any desired purpose. In
puppet valves, for instance,'the valve per se is usually opened to a maximum and then closed, the movement being continuous.
The present invention contemplates the utilization of means whereby the opening of the valve may be attained quickly and the closing of the valve may be attainedquickly, while the maximum opening may be maintained for an appreciable length. of time, thus producing a longer maximum opening than is produced by a gradual opening and a gradual closing valve. These results are produced byan arrangement of multiplying mechanism and a peculiarly formed cam which will produce the proper movement to the multiplying, mechanism, which in turn multiplies such movement and acts in timed relation thereto for producing the proper action of the valve member 7901" so.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the manifold or discharge outlet for the exhaust of an ex plosive engine and 2 the valve per so which coacts with the seat 3 for opening and closing the manifold 1. Part of an explosive engine is shown in the drawing and the description will be in connection therewith, but it is to be understood that the invention may be applied not only to explosive engines but to engines or machines of any construction to which the device may be adapted.
The valve member 2 is provided with a valve stem or rod 4: which projects through a suitable opening in the casing 5 and ex tends downwardly into a framework in the form of a casing 6. A'stop 7 is formed integral with rod 1 or rigidly secured thereto in any desired manner so as to present any bers 10 and 11 fitting in guideways 12 and 18, as moreclearly shown in Fig.2, which guideways. may be mounted inthe casing 6 in any desired way, as for instance, by. screws 14.
On one side of the lower part of the rod 43 adjacent the bearing members 10 and 11 1s arranged a rack 15, while on theopposite slde is arranged a rack 16, these racks meshing with the gear wheels 17 and 18, respectively. In connection with the wheels 17 and 18 it will be observed that the same, in addition to meshing withracks 15 and 16, also mesh with stationary racks 25 and% secured in any desired way to the casing 6,
as for instance, by screws 27. The casing is -mountedin any suitable manner, as for 1nstance by screws or bolts, to any desired part of the engine or other stationary support. In providing thegearwheels 17 and 18, wheels of equal radius are preferably used.
As shown in Fig. 1, the roller 23 is adapted to continually engage the cam 28 which is rigidly;secured to, shaft 29, which continually rotates while the engine or other machine is in operation. If the device is connectedwith an explosive engine, shaft 29 is geared or otherwise connected with the power shaft of the engine so as to operate in timed relationtothe movement of the pistons in order to cause the opening and closing of valve 2 at theproper time; Cam 28 is provided with inclined cam faces 30 and81 and a bearing face The movement of the Wheel 23' in opening lvalve 2 commences at approximately the point 33 and ends at point 34 The wheel then engages the bearing face 32 until the point 35 is reached, whereupon the valve will begin to close and continue the closing movement until the wheel 23 reaches point 36, where upon thedvalve is closed and will remain closedfduring the further rotation of the ca'niuntilthe point 33 is reached.

However, as an example, the drawing shows the'sanie as ccupying approximately 100, the cam faces 30 and 31 occupying 30 each and the bearing face 32 occupying approximately 40. By this construction and arrangement it is evident that the valve 2 will be opened from a closed position to a maximum open position during the 80 movement of cam 28 and will-remain open at its maximum vfor a 40 movement of the cam,

In Fig. 3 is shown a slightly modified form of the invention in which gear wheels 38, 39 and 40 are provided onthe arms of a yoke similar to the y0l e21 and are caused to mesh with a plurality of racks 41 secured to a housing 6. Shaft 4 in this form of the invention is provided with an extension 4; having three sides, each side being provided with a rack for meshing with these respective gear wheels. This form of the invention. clearly brings out the idea that the invention may be applied in a number of ways, as for instance, by a single gear wheel, a pair 7 of gear wheels as shown in Fig. 1, three gear wheels as shown in Fig. 2, or other numbers as may be desired. Where the work is light a single gear wheel would. be desirable, but for a variety of cases, as for instance an ordinary explosive engine, the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 would be preferable, while a greater number of gear wheels would be desirable in case large valves were to be operated against a comparatively higher pressure.
It is of course evident that the racks and gear wheels may be made from any desired material, but preferably the same are made from some durable alloy or steel so as to re si st the wear during constant use.
Vhat I claim is 1. In a valve gear of the character described, the combination with a puppet valve and a cam for operating the same, of a multiplying mechanism interposed between the cam and the valve for multiplying the movement caused by the cam.
2. In a valve gear of the character described, a multiplying mechanism, a valve connected with said mechanism and adapted tobe actuated thereby, an operating rod connected with said mechanism for actuating the mechanism, and a cam for actuating said rod, said cam being formed with a pair of inclined faces and a bearing face joining the outer part of said inclined faces, said bearing face being constructed on the are of a c rcle with the center coincident with the center of the cam.
3. A valve gear comprising a valve operpower rod.
{1. .In a valve gear of the character described, a valve adapted to be opened and closed, a rod extending from said valve provided with a plurality of racks, a gear wheel meshing with each of said racks, a stationary rack meshing with each of the gear wheels, a power rod connected with said gear wheels for actuating the same, a cam for actuating said rod in one direction, and means for moving said rod in the opposite direction. 5. In a valve gear of the character described, the combination with a valve member, of a plurality of racks connected there with, resilient means for resiliently retaining said valve closed and for moving the same to a closed position when moved therefrom, a gear wheel meshing with each of said racks, a stationary rack member meshing with each of said gear wheels, an operating rod connected with all of said gear wheels, and a cam for moving said operating rod in one direction.
6. In a valve gear of the character described, the combination with a valve, of a power member, means for multiplying the movements of said power member, said means actuating said valve in one direction, a spring for returning said valve, and a cam for actuating said power means, said cam being formed with a raised portion having a pair of oppositely inclined cam faces and a connecting bearing face whereby said power member is raised and then maintained in a raised position a predetermined length of time.
7. A valve gear comprising a multiplying mechanism connected with a valve member for moving the valve member, a power member for actuating said multiplying mechanism, and a cam for actuating said power member in one direction, said cam being formed with an annular portion merging into a raised portion, said raised portion being provided with a pair of cam faces and a connecting bearing face, said connecting bearing face being struck on an arc of a circle and parallel with the annular portion of the cam, whereby said power member is held stationary in its raised position while engaging said bearing face, the movement of the power member over said cam faces being a predetermined portion less than the movement of the valve according to the degree of multiplication of said power multiplying mechanism.

A valve gear comprising a rod adapted to be connected with the valve, a spring acting on said rod for normally holding the same in a given position, said rod being provided with a pair of racks and a pair of bearing members, a guide for each of said bearing members, agear wheel meshing denies of this patent may be obtained for with each of said racks, a stationary rack for each of said gear wheels meshing therewith, a yoke for supporting both of said gear wheels, a power member connected with said yoke for actuating the yoke in one direction, and a cam for actuating said power member, said cam moving said power member one half the distance that the valve connected with said rod is moved.

A valve gear COIHPFiSiIlg' a rod adapted to be connected with a valve member, a spring for normally holding said rod in a given position, a plurality of racks arranged on said rod, a plurality of guides arranged on said rod, guideways forv engaging said guides, a gear wheel connected with each of said racks, a stationary rack meshing with each of said gear wheels opposite said first mentioned racks, a member for connecting all of'said gear wheels, a power member connected with said gear wheel connecting member, and a cam for actuating said power member and said rod against the action of said spring, said cam being provided with a pair of inclined faces and a connecting bearing face whereby said power member and parts associated therewith are raised and maintained in a raised position for a predetermined time and then lowered to their original position, thus producing a quick open.- ing and closing of said valve and the maintenance of said valve in a maximum open position for a maximum time.
10. A valve gear comprising a valve operating rod for opening and closing the valve, a rack connected with said rod, a gear meshing with said rack, a stationary rack meshing with said gear, a power rod for actuating said gear, and an actuating power member for moving said power rod.
