Description
`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR WRIGHT, 0F uNEI'W YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE LUNALITE COMPANY OF AMERICA, OF DOVER, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
PICTURE-SCREEN'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1916.
Application led Kay 29, 1913. Serial No, 770,578.
To ali whom may concern.'
- relates to a screen for mof cting purposes, having a i become luminescent unlight-emitting body so e feen adapted to remove l. as to increase and ir rn ss and character of the pro- Jiones-:f2.1 the screen.
fntion capable of being y different Ways, I will hereinafter, illustration, set forth certain Ways in. 'which my invention may ice carries out, and for the purposes of illustration l have shown diagrammatically one ornc of us which may be used in carry; our invention, in the accompa- ,t ings, whichm nying The is a diagrammatic perspective paratus made in accordance with my tion and showing a screen of the charac described herein.
Referring to the drawings, I make use of a projecting machine l of the ordinary type, and constructed in any desired manner whereby series of pictures may be projected in succession upon a screen 2 to give the oiQ moving objects. The screen 2 may he of any desired construction or thickness, it being only necessary that it be pron vided with a iight-receiving surface of the character hereinafter set forth. In the op-l eration of the projecting machine the light may, as usual, be entirely out off from the projecting machine so that no light passes therefrom to the screen 2 during these intervals.
The screen may be provided with a coating of any one of a number of different materials, either alone or mixed with other desired materials, and the same may be applied to the surface of the screen in any desired manner. I, however, prefer to provide the screen with a coating of any one or a number of the following materials: Willemite; cadmium sulfate alone or mixed view ci with manganese sulfate or sodium cornpounds such as sodium sulfate, sodium sili- Cates, sodium manganate, sodium fiuorid, sodium berate, and sodium aluminum. suiate; zinc chlorid, either alone or with manganese sulfate; cadmium chlorid, either alone or mixed with manganese sulfate; zinc sulfate, either alone or mixed with manganese suifate; calcium suiid; strontium suh'id; barium suld; sidot blends phosphorescent Zinc suliid; manganese chlorid mixed with l various organic compounds such, example, as naphthyi carmine, phthalic anu hydrid, Testa naphthoh and tetrachier phthahc anhydrid. In some instances these materials may be previously subjected to prolonged heating to maire them entireiy anhycrous in order to improve the eiects obtained. These substances may be applied to a screen of any desired character in any suitahie Way, but preferably I apply them in a coating of varnish, geiatin, soluble cellulose compounds, watenglass or any other similar coating material which will retain the active substances in position upon screen, yit being understood that the gelatin and Water-glass are dissolved in Water in the usual Wai, or that the Water may be used' alone.
As a suitahie example or" myinvention, I may apply a coating of colorless Wiilemite to a screen such as one made of a flexible fabric, the Willemite being applied in a linely divided condition with a coating oi' transparent varnish. It desired, a screen may be constructed of a solid body of crys talline Willeniite or similar compound.
.Vhile I 'have described my invention above in detail, I Wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A projection screen provided with anl image-display surface adapted to become luminescent under excitation of a lightemitting body, substantially as and for the sodium chier-id; iluorite;
4m A motion pict'm'e screen having a, surbod'v, said luminescence having the inherent 1c fue@ comprising wil/emite held m placel by quality of being pensisieni for only a Short a transparent binder. period of time. Y Y
5. A motion picture screen having a phoslin testimony that I daim the foregoing 5 phoresceni; light-receiving surface comprishave hereunto set my hand. Y
ARTHUR WRGHT.
lng Willemite heid in place by varnish.
6. A projection screen having an image- Witnesses: display surface adapied to become iurnines- L. iBRonnnoK, cem; under exoitahion of :i ligh-emitting J. FnnlvmaNvoLL.
