Be it known that I, Osoan D. HAPGOOD, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Orange, Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to tools and more especially to drilling tools and the like, in which a number of tool members of different sizes may be used.
@ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a gage corresponding to the various sizes of tool members, whereby the desired tool member may be quickly ascertained.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of this invention, and in which the same reference numeral refers to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is an elevational view'of the tool, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken .on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the tool, which is shown as a drilling tool of the type shown and described in Patent #463,507, granted November 17th, 1891, to A. D. and H. E. Goodell, although it will, of course, be understood that other types of tools may embody the invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
The handle 2 of the tool is preferably formed as shown of a metallic shell within which is positioned a block 3 of wood or any other suitable material, which is provided with a plurality of chambers 4, within which the drill bits are adapted to be retained. On the upper end of the handle is a rotatable cap 5 provided with a perforation 6 adapted to be brought into registry with any desired one of the chambers 4, whereby any one of the drill bits may be withdrawn from its retaining chamber 4. The cap 5 is normally held in position with the perforation 6 out of registry with any one of the chambers 4 by means of a locking member 7 normally held in its uppermost or locking position, as by a spring, (not shown) and adapted to be moved to its lowermost or unlocking position by means of a finger-piece 8. The above described features are shown in the patent above referred to.

Serial no. ceases Circumferentially arranged around the handle 2, preferably adjacent the upper end thereof, are a plurality of holes 9, there being as many holes as there are chambers. As shown, these holes extend through the shell and also through the block 3, whereby they are in communication with the several chambers 4. Each of the holes 9 has an area equal to the cross sectional area of the drill bit or other tool member which is positioned within the chamberwith which the hole is associated, and for convenience, the holes are preferably arranged in the order of their sizes. As shown in the drawing, for example, the smallest hole, which corresponds to the smallest drill bit, is positioned immediately to the left of the locking member 7, and the largest hole, which corresponds to the largest drill bit, is shown immediately to the right of the locking member.
Numerals 1, 2, 3, etc, are preferably placed upon the handle adjacent the holes 9, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In using the tool, if, for example, it is required to drill a hole, the diameter of which will correspondto the cross sectional area of a given nail, it is merely necessary to insert the nail in the holes 9 formed in the handle until it is ascertained which hole the nail fits. It is then merely necessary to withdraw the locking member 7 and rotate the cap 5 until the perforation 6 therein registers with the chamber corresponding to the hole in which the nail fitted, then by inverting the tool the drill bit which is retained in the chamber may be removed and placed in the drill in its operative position. It will thus be seen that a very handy device has been provided, whereby the proper size drill bitor other tool member may be quickly and readily ascertained.
Having described this invention in connection with the illustrative embodiment thereof, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not, of course, to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. In a tool, the combination with a cylindrical holder provided with a series of longitudinal chambers adapted to hold a plurality of tool members of various sizes; of a gage for the holder including a plurality of openings radially through the same coincident with the respective chambers and corresponding in sizes to the sizes of the tool members adapted to be held in the chambers.
2. In a tool, the combination with a cylindrical handle provided with a series of longitudinal chambers adapted to hold a plurality of tool members of various sizes; of a gage for the handle including a plurality of openings radially through the handle coincident with the respective chambers and corresponding in sizes to the sizes of the tool members adapted to be held in the chambers, a cap for the handle permitting the removal of said tool members and means to hold said cap against moving, said openin'gs being arranged circumferentially around the handle, there being marks on the handle adjacent thereto indicating the sizes in the chambers.
3. The combination with a cylindrical handle of a tool having a series of longitudinal chambers connecting at one end thereof and adapted to contain a plurality of tools of varying diameters and means for closing said chambers to prevent displacement of means carried by the handle and cap to hold said cap against movement or to permit movement thereof for registration of said opening with any of the chambers as desired, said handle adjacent to said cap being provided with a series of circular gage holes each equal in cross sectional area to the cross sectional dimension of the chamber corresponding thereto at its inner end, said holes being positioned in a common plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the handle and adapted to receive a nail or other element for which a bit of proper relative diameter is to be removed from a chamber, whereby said element will serve as a mark ing member to permit positioning of the cap for registration of its opening with a chamber containing the desired bit whereby the latter may be removed upon the handle being inverted.
