Be it known that we, HENRY L. DISMER and NORMAN MIRFIELD, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Mattress-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to sewing machines and more specifically to that class thereof designed for use especially' in the manufac-- ture of mattresses in forming the roll or bead provided, as is known, at the edge of a mattress. y
The object of our invention is the production of a sewing machine as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which will be of an adjustable nature so as to permit of rolls or beads of various sizes being formed, and one which will beeiiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lith these -objects in view our invention consists in the combinations and arrange ments of parts hereinafter described and y claimed.

The preferred form of` construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a supporting element or table 10 provided with a base or supporting legs 11. Mounted upon the upper side of table 10 are longitudinally' extending spaced parallel rails 12. Mounted above the table 10 is awork supporting platform-13 equipped at itsunder side with Specification of Letters Patent.

Coperating with the table 1() is a weight 14 equipped at its upper side with a channel pulley 11 which rests loosely in a bight formed in a cord or fiexible element 15 between the secured end 1G of said cord and a channel pulley 1T over which said cord passes. The opposite end 1S of cord 15 is rigidly secured to the outer end of platform 13. The arrangement 4is such, as will be seen, that` with the platform positioned at the end of the table 1() as shown in the several views,` the weight 1l will be supported in an elevated position and will exert a downward pressure or gravity force upon the bight in cord 15 engagedby pulley 11 which will tend to move the platform 13 toward the opposite end of table 10. `1Vith this arrangement then it will be seen that, upon release of said platform, the same will be automaticallyT advanced or moved along the table 10. Such movement of said platform is intermittently arrested by escapement mechanism comprising a rack or'plurality of spaced stops'l) secured centrally stops 2S and 29 respectively.` Said springs are interposed as shown between said fingers* and stops 30 and 31,the latter also serving as means of limiting the pivotal movement of said fingers when the same are rocked against the tension of said springs, The arrangement is such that, upon reciprocation of the member 20, the fingers 22 and .2% will alternatelyV engage with the teeth ot rack 19. Vhen the finger 23 lis moved from engagement with said rack and the finger 22 is moved into engagement therewith, (the latter, when moved into engagement, being in the dotted line positionshown in Fig. 4) the influence of weight 14 upon the platform 13 will overcome the tension of spring 26 causing rocking of the n'ger 22 tothe -full line position thereof as shown in Fig. 4. Upon return movementof the member 20,
vwhich the linger 22 will be Amoved -out of engagementwith the rack 19 and the finger 23 moved into engagement therewith,

Immediately upon the release of finger 22,
the same will 4be returned to its normal po sition by the spring 26 and, upon the succeeding reciprocation of the member 20, will l .engage another tooth o f rack 19 so as to permit of another advance of the platform 13 'immediately upon movement of the finger,

Thus it will be seen that the movement of the platform upon the table 10 will be intermittently arrested or interrupted`v said platform gradually stepping` along said table in the reciprocatory movementl of the member 20. The linger is pivotally mounted and a vspring 2T is provided for coperation therewith so as to afford means of effecting intermittent stepping or feeding of the-platform in the opposite direction ifidesired. lVhen this is done the cord 1,5 needs only to be passed around the opposite side of pulley 17 and the end 18 thereof connected with the opposite end of the platform. .lVhen this is done it will be seen that the functions of.

Arranged above the platforni13 is a sewing element consisting of a head or sup-porting body 32 which is supported in angularv head 32 isso supported as to permit of an? guiar .adjustment thereof, such adjustment being permit-ted when screws 37 are loosened.

Provided lat the front, side lof head 32 is a substantially' circular housing 38 'in which is arranged a needle bar 39 mounted for reciprocatory movement.' At the lower end of said needle bar-is provided a needle 40 of conventional construction. Coperating with said needle is a presser foot 41 supported in operative position'by means of presser bar 42 which is rigidly secured at its upper end to housing` 3S. Actuation of needle bai' 39 isueifected through the medium of a link 13 which connects Said bar with a crank 1l provided at one end of a shaft l5 mount-ed in suitable bearings provided in he'ad 32. One end of the shaft projects exteriorly and is provided with a channel pulley 16 around which passes an endless 'belt 17., the latter also passing around a channel pulley 18 of an electric motor 49. Guide rollers 50 cooperate with the beltl' in the passage thereof between the pulleys -16 and 18. Also cooperating with said belt-is a pair of pulleys 51 provided at the upper end of a pivoted lever with which cooperates a helical tension spring The pulleys 51, lever and spring 53 constitute a slack-taking--up device which permits of angular adjustment of the head 32, as before mentioned, without effecting the operative connection between the driving motor 19 and the shaft 5. as will be readily understood. Formed in the shaft Al5 is a crank 55 with which connects the upper end of a link 56. The `lower end of link 56 is connected with a crank 57 provided at one end of a shaft 58 mounted in suitable bearings provided in the liverend of head 32. At the opposite end of shaft 58 is providedf'a rotary shuttle 59 of conventional construction design to cooperate with the needle 40 in the sewing operation as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Supported at the upper end of head 3; is a spool of thread 60. the thread 61 in unwinding'froin said spool passing through a tension device 62 and thence through perforations provided in the opposite sides of an inverted substantially U-shaped ineinber 63 fastened to the upper end of housingr 38.. In its passage from one side of iiieinber 63 to the other the thread 61 passes also through the perforated upper end of a linger 6*-1. The lower end of said linger 6l is equipped with an eccentric band 65 which embraces an eccentric 66 secured to shaft l5 as clearly shown in Fig. 7. The arrangement is such that. during` rotation of said shaft;A the `finger 61 will be vertically reciprocated. causing the thread 61 to be drawn or looped downwardly in order to effectv unwinding thereof from the spool 60, said finger constituting a thread feedingr mechanisin as will'be readily understood by those skilled inl the art. After passing from the member 63 the thread 61 passes through the upper end of needle bar 66 and thence to the eye at -the lower end of the needle.
Provided upon the shaft 53 is also a cani 67 which engages against an arm 68 fulcrumed at 69 in the lower end of the head 32. Said arm is held in constant contact with the cam 67 b v nieans of a compression spring 68. Also fulc'rumed at 69 isa depending arni' 70 which is releasably locked to the broadened lower end of arm 68 by means'of thumb screw 71 passing through segmental slot 72 provided in said end of arm 68. lVith this arrangement it will be seen that an operative connection is estab-A lished between arms GS' and 7() so that upon oscillation of the former through rotation of cam 67, said arm 70 will be simultaneously oscillated. The releasable connection be-y tween said arms 68 and 70 permits of angular adjustment of the latter relative to the former in order to operatively position the same for the performance of its function set forth in the following, after angular adjustment of the head 32. 4
The lower end of arm 70 engages with a slot 73 provided in an extensiomplate 74 adjust'ably connected with thel rearward end of member 20 by means 'of thumb screw 74', said screw passing through an elongated slot 7 5 provided inthe plate 74 so as to permit of j relative longitudinal adjustment of the latter as Willbe readily understood. With the'construction set forth it will be seenthat an operative connection is establishedbetween the sewing element and the escapement mechanism coperating with the platform 13, this connection being however adjustable by reason of the adjustable connection of arms GSand 70 and plate 74 and member QOso as to maintain this operative connection in the angular adjustment of the head 32.
In the operation of the machine the mattress A which it is desired to operate upon is positioned upon the platform 13 as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. with the vplatform positioned at the end of the table stop flanges 77 project upwardly from the table 10 for coperationwith said mattress to determine the position thereofl relative to the sewing element as will be readily understood. The bases 7 Bof the members 77 are adjustably connected with the` table 1,0 by means of thumb screws 79 which engage withelongated transversely extending slots 80 provided in said base portions. lith this arrangement it will be seen that adjustment of the inner or objective edge of the mattress toward or from the sewing element is readily effected by simply adjusting the position of members 77. Upon operation of the motor 49 it will be seen that the needle 40 will pierce the adjacent edge portion of the mattress s o as to result in the formation of a rbll or bead. rThe mattress carrying platform 13 will be gradually advanced or fed along the table 10 past the sewing element resulting in the gradual sewing of themattress edge. Itis of course understood that the periods of movement of the platform 13 willoccur when theneedle 40 is out of en- Guide or gagement with the mattress. Vhile we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carl rying our invention into effect, this is capable of' variation and modification without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. lVe, therefore, do not wish to be limited to tions and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our inventionwhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A machine of the class described comprising a movable work supporting element; a'n angularly disposed sewing element arranged adjacent one edge ofsaid supporting element; means for intermittently moving said work supporting element relative to said sewing element, said last mentioned means comprising means adapted normallyv to move said work supporting element in one direction; and escapement mechanism for intermittently arresting the movement of said element, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising a movable work supporting element; an anghlarly disposed sewing element arranged adjacent one edge of said supporting element; means for intermittently moving said work supporting element relative to said sewing element, said last mentioned means comprising meansadapted normally to move said work supporting element in one direction; means for intermittently arresting the movement of said supporting element, said lastl mentioned means comprising a plurality of spaced stops on said supporting element; escapement mechanism coperating with said stops; a source of power; and an operative connection between said source of power and said sewing element and escapement mechanism, substantially as described.
