To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. DAWSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stapling Devices, of which the following is a specificaA tion.
My invention relates to improvements in stapling devices, and has for its object the provision of an improved instrument of this character which greatly facilitates the driv ing of staples or other securing members and which is especially adapted for attach-y ing labeling cards to car doors and the like.
rEhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
'lhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an instrument embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the same, Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the instrument, Fig. 5, a longitudinal section taken through the head of the instrument with portions broken away for the sake of clearness, Fig. 6, a detail section illustrating a pawl mechanism employed in the construction, Fig. 7, an enlarged detail section of a portion of the instrument head taken substantially on line 7-7 of Fig. 4, Fig. 8, a bottom plan view of the head of the instrument with portions broken away for the sake of clearness, Fig. 9, an enlarged interior elevation of the lower portion of a guide member employed in the construction, Fig. 10, a view taken at right angles to Fig. 9, Fig. 11, a section taken on line 11-11 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 12, a plan view of a portion of a strip of staples employed in the instrument.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a hammer-like instrument having a hollow handle and a hollow head somewhat in the shape of an ordinary blunt-headed hammer. A cutter member 13 is pivotally mounted at 14 in the handle of the instrument, and is provided with a cutting edge 15 coperating with cutting edge 16 formed on a cutter head 17 arranged in the head of the instrument, said cutter member and cutter head coperating together to sever staples 18 Speciicaton of Letters Patent.

from a continuous strip of staples at points 19, as indicated in Fig. 12. Guide members 20 are slidably mounted in guide channels 21 formed in the head of the instrument, said guide members constituting depending legs from a cross head 22 slidable in said guide channels. The cross head 22 carries a block 22 to which is secured a` guide stem 23 and a compression spring 24 is arranged on said guide stem as shown to normally press the guide members outwardly from the head of the instrument in position to impact with a surface struck thereby. Guide grooves'or channels 25 are arranged l in the inner faces of guide members 20 in position to receive and guide the sides of'a staple 18 severed from the strip of staples and driven by the head of the instrument, said channels being provided with entry notches 25 to permit the passage of the end staple 18 into said channels, as indicated. By this arrangement, it will be observed that, a staple 18, resting in channels 25 between cutter member 13 and cutting edge 16, will be severed from the strip of staples by a blow with the instrument, causing guides 20 and cutter member 13 to impact with the surface struck, and said severed staple will be accurately driven into said surface, the guide grooves 25 serving as positioning or guiding means during the driving and unsheathing the staple as driven.
At each blow of the instrument, the strip of staples, which rest upon cutter' member 13, as shown, is automatically fed to the cutting elements a sufficient distance to cause a fresh'staple to enter guide channels 25 and be severed at the next blow. ing is effected through the medium of a swinging member consisting of two parallel plates 26 pivotally mounted in the handle of the instrument on a pin 27 and secured together and distanced apart by means of studs 28.
A spring 30 is coiled about a pin 31 in the instrument handle and its ends are rested upon pivot pin 27 and stud 28, said spring being given tension to normally force the plates 26 outwardly against the back of cutter member 13, as indicated. Arranged between the plates 26 is a saddle 32 pivoted to said plates by means of a pin 33 and carrying at its lower end two pawls 34 connected together by a yoke or saddle 35 and pivoted in said saddle 32 by means of a pvot pin 36.
This feed- A spring 37 is coiled around pin 36 between pawls 34, one end of said spring resting against pivot pin 33 and the other end against the under side of yoke 35 and said spring being given tension to normally press the pawls 34 into engagement with the strip of staples 18 resting upon the back of cutter member 13. A transverse stationary pin 3S operates in a slot 39 in plates 26 and is arranged to engage a notch 40 formed in the under side of a lateral projection 41 on saddle member 32 in position to engage pin 33 adjacent the extremity of the outward movement of plates 26 under the influence of spring 30. The arrangement is such that at each blow of the instrument, upon inward movement of cutter member 13, the plates 26 will be also moved inwardly thus forcing the pawls 34 into the position indicated in Fig. 5. Upon the rebound of the instrument, the spring 30 operates to force the plates 26 and cutter member 13 outwardly, whereupon pin 38 engages recess 40 and swings saddle member' 32 to the left in the position indicated in Fig. 5 to feed the strip of staples suiiciently to cause a fresh staple to enter the channels 25 through notches 25 ready for the next blow of the instrument.
An entry notch 42 is preferably formed at the extreme end of the instrument and a guide member 43 is provided in said handle in position to guide a strip of staples to the space between cutter member 13 and plates 26 for reloading the instrument, as will be readily understood. *A leaf spring 44 is arranged on the outer face of cutter member 13 in position to engage a card 45, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, and hold said card in position to be secured by a staple severed and driven by the instrument, thus providing a simple and eiiicient means for attaching labeling cards to car doors or similar surfaces.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Y Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a hammer-like instrument; a yieldable cutter on said instrument arranged to `be operated by a blow; means in said instrument cooperating with said cutter to sever a securing member from a strip of connected members upon striking a blow therewith; means for driving a severed securing member; a yieldable guide for severed securing members during driving; and automatic means for feeding a strip of securing members to said cutting means, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a hammer-like instrument; a yieldable cutter on said instrument arranged to be operated by a blow; means in said instrument coperating with said cutter to sever a staple from a strip upon striking a blow therewith; means for driving severed staples; a yieldable guide for severed staples during driving; and automatic means for feeding a strip of staples to said cutting means, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a hammer-like instrument provided with a hollow handle having an entry slot in its extreme end; an inwardly yieldable cutter member pivoted in said handle and protruding therefrom in position to impact with a surface struck by said instrument; a cutter head in said instrument cooperating with said yieldable cutter member to sever a staple from a strip of staples; yieldable guides arranged at each side of said cutter head and protruding from the striking face of said instrument and provided with guide grooves in position to receive the severed staple and with an entry notch entering said groove to permit passage of a staple thereinto; and automatic means for feeding said strip to said cutter head after each blow of the instrument, substantially as described.
