COMBINATION'STIFFAND DROP TONGUE GEAR TENNESSEE.
FOR WAGONS.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MILBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combination Stiff and Drop Tongue Gear for Wagons, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a tongue for wagons and has for its prin cipal object the provision of an arrangement which can be used as a stifftongue or a drop tongue as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in the particular arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing:v Figure. 1 is a plan of a wagon gear shown with the device arranged as a stiff tongue. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of certain parts as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation, partly in section, of certain parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail showing part 7 more clearly. Fig. 5 is a side elevation partly in section showing the tongue in dropped position. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the tongue after it has been removed from the remainder of the gear. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the latch 11. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the bracket 10. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the part 12.
Throughout the separate views the same part is designated by the same reference character.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 is a tongue which is shown in the drawing as applied to a wagon. This, however, is not essential. The hounds of the wagon are shown at 2 and the hounds are connected to the top sway bar 13 by means of braces such as 15. At their forward ends the hounds 2 approach each other forming a channel in which lies the tongue 1. The rear end of the tongue is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as passing beneath a bar 3 which serves as a stop or holder, there being a metal strap 4.- secured to the lower face of the bar 3, which forms with the bar a socket through which It will be evident that extended between the that the tongue will be held stiff provided, of course, the bar 3 is securely fastened to the hounds 2 as shown.
Above the tongue 1 is shown an evener bar 5 and a hammer strap 6 secured to the top of the tongue and extending over the evener bar 3 and the strap 4:

bar so as to project somewhat in front there of. The strap 6 is provided with an aperture just in front of the evener bar 5 and through this aperture extends downwardly a removable pin or wrench 8, the top of which is formed as a wrench for use on the axle nut. This latter use, however, has notl1- ing to do with my invention as the pin 8 serves to hold in place the latching member which is used in connection with my means for transmitting the tension of the tongue to the front axle. I
The transmitting arrangement just mentioned comprises a bracket secured to the lower face of the tongue, as best shown in Fig. 3. Extending downward from the bracket 10 and integral therewith are two .lugs. 19-19 between which is a transverse bolt 9 which 1s supported in the groove be tween the two lugs by means of bolts such as 18 shown in dotted lines, which extend downward from the hounds 2. Side stay braces 14 which are pivoted also to the bolts 18 run rearwardly to the front axle so as to transmit the strain from the tongue and bolt 9 to the axle. The bolt 9 is prevented from being disengaged from the lugs 1919 by means of a latch bolt 11 which extends through apertures in the lugs 19l9 and through an aperture in a third lug 12. The latch 11 effectively prevents the tongue from jumping or being lifted off of the bolt 9 when the wagon is being used.
The latch 11 is normally held in the posi tion shown in Fig. 8 by means of the bolt 8 previously mentioned which extends downwardly through an aperture in the plate 7 after first passing through the strap 6. It will be seen that the plate 7 is fastened to the front of the evener bar 5, a detail of the plate being shown in Fig. 4. Below the plate 7, the rod 8 extends through the tongue 1, the bracket 10 and the aperture in the latch 11.
The bar 3 is normally held in place by means of bolts such as 21-21 and it will be evident that when these bolts are removed the bars can be taken away from engagement with the tongue 1 whereupon the tongue will be converted into a drop tongue and can occupy the position shown 1n Fig. 5, pivoting about the bar 9. Furthermore, if it is now desired to remove the tongue 1 from the wagon, all that is necessary is to remove the pin 8 whereupon the latch 11 may be pushed forward into the position shown in Fig. 6 and the tongue can readily be removed as will be evident. Referring to Fig. 7, it will be seen that the aperture in the latch 11 is designated as 20. Moreover, it will be seen from Fig. 9 that the lug 12 is removable from the bracket 10.
The top bolster of the wagon is shown at 17 and the usual construction is to provide a sand bolster between this bolster and the axle. However, such sand bolster is not shown in the drawings as it forms no part of my invention.
It will be understood that I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I do not wish to be limited to the mechanical details shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination in a Wagon, of a pair of hounds, a bolt supported from said hounds, a tongue, a bracket supported on the underside of said tongue, a pair of lugs projecting from said bracket for embrac- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ing said bolt, a latch arranged to pass through said lugs for locking said bar therebetween, and a pin for holding said latch in looking position.
2. A draft gear for a wagon comprising in combination a pair of hounds, a bolt fixed to said hounds, a tongue extending transversely of said bolt and above the same, a bracket on the underside of said tongue having two downwardly extending lugs between which said bolt passes, a latch member passing through said lugs beneath said bolts for preventing the lifting of the tongue, a double tree mounted above said tongue, and a second bolt passing downwardly through said tongue and serving as a pivot for said double tree and also as a lock for said latch member. V
In test1mony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
