To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, MAX Boonsrnon, manufacturer, subject of the King of Sanony, Germany, residing at Klein Sedlita, near Pirna, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timing- Gear for Stamping-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
With stamping presses the quality of the work produced will depend, to a great extent, on the time during which such work has been under pressure. Therefore devices have been designed, not only for automatically relieving the pressure but also for automatically reengaging the press after a given interval has expired. The one design, how ever, will require a less period of pressure than another, the details of which are finer and therefore necessitate longer pressure. As, new, the hitherto known timing gears could be set for a given period of pressure only, much time is wasted on designs which call for a shorter period only.
The present invention consists in the arrangement that the timing gear can be set for any period of pressure, within the pram tical limits, so that each operation may be set for exactly such period as may be required for clearly obtaining all details.
Figure l of the accompanying drawing illustrates the general arrangement of the timing gear on a stamping press; Figs. 2 and 3 are section and plan, respectively, of the timing gear.
The operation of the timing gear is based on the velocity of a falling body 0 (Fig. 1) being controlled, by the same acting on a piston which displaces a liquid in a cylinder 6. The velocity at which such liquid escapes can be accurately controlled by means of a regulating valve 10.
The timing gear operates in the following manner: Fig. 1 illustrates the moment at which the stamping press under pressure has been disengaged by the usual, known means. At the same moment the weight 0, pivoting on the fulcrum ,0; will move downward and will, by aid of the piston rod (Z and the piston 7 force the liquid in cylinder 6 out through the regulating valve. a and back into the cylinder, but this time above the piston. Lever b, to which weight 0 is fitted, is coupled by means of a rod Z, a bell crank in and a connecting rod 0 with the starting lever n. In rod Z is cut a slot q in which engages a pin 1" of lever Z). lVhen the wei ht 0 has dropped sufiiciently far, so that the pin 1" reaches the end of the slot the engagement of the machine will be instantly started. In order that this should not proceed too slowly, the following arrangement is provided: The piston 7' (Figs. 2 and 3 is bored, and this bore is closed by a valve 9 which can open in a downward direction only. This valve is thus opened by a rod o and a lever 2' by aid of a push rod 70, which is linked to the lever 72 of the weight. As the push rod 70 is farther from the fulcrum 79 of lever Z) than the piston rod (Z, the push rod is will lead and open the valve 9 at the proper moment. The liquid can then pass directly through the piston and the weight 0 can drop quickly, so that the machine is also quickly engaged and the press-head a rises quickly. This press-head, on rising, carries with it, by means of strap a the weight 0. This position of the timing gear is maintained as long as the press-head a remains in its highest position. When the machine is engaged, the press-head quickly moves down for pressing, while the weight follows slowly, and will, after the time determined by the regulating valve u, reengage the press.
I claim:
1. In a stamping press, in combination with the presser head thereof, a weighted lever, means for connecting said head and lever, a cylinder, a liquid containing vessel at the lower end of said cylinder, a piston having a bore within said cylinder, a valve for closing said bore and means engaging said valve for opening the same at the proper moment said valve timing the reengagement between said weighted lever and said presser v head, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stamping press in combination with the presser head thereof, a weighted lever, a strap connecting said head and said lever, a cylinder adapted to receive a liquid in its lower part, a piston in said cylinder having a bore, a valve opening toward the lower part of said cylinder only for closing said bore, a stem on said valve, a connecting rod secured to said piston and fulcrumed to said weighted lever, a link parallelly disposed to said connecting rod and fulcrumed to said Weighted lever in front of the fulset my hand in presence of tWo subscribing crum of said connecting rod, and a link Witnesses. fnicrumed to the piston and connected by a MAX ROCKSTROH. pin and slot connection to said fiist named link, substantially as described and for the Witnesses: purpose set forth.
