To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS E. SHoUP, citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Devices for Drilling-Rigs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in feed devices for drilling rigs, and more es pecially to improvements'in a certain feed device for drilling rigs shown in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,003,011

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the main portion of a drilling rig having a feed device adapted to be poweract-uated in accordance with my invention.
The feed device to which the above-identified Letters Patent relate, consists of a winding-drum 1, provided with a suitable frame 2, arranged to be mounted upon the Samson-post 3, of a drilling-rig. Upon the shaft of said drum, a worm-wheel 4 is mounted and keyed, and, meshing therewith, is a worm 5. As originally constructed, one end only of the shaft 6 of said worm, is extended beyond its bearing and a handwheel 7 is mounted thereon, whereby the worm is arranged to be manually actuated for the purpose of revolving said gear 1, and the drum to which it is aflixed. The-purpose and operation of the mechanism thusfar described is clearly set forth in said Letters Patent No. 1,003,011.
I have found it to be desirable to provide this device with means whereby it may be power-actuated, and have ascertained that this inventive idea of power-actuation may be practically embodied in various ways, but those shown in the drawin s appear to be best adapted to all circumstances, and the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is as follows: I construct a friction-transmission device, and employ the band-wheel 8 (com' mon to nearly all drilling-rigs) as the drivlng-member of same. The driven member consists of a pulley 9, so arranged that the periphery thereof may be placed into operable frictional contact with the lateral face of said band-wheel. The shaft of said wheel 9 is provided with a box or bearing 10, having a base which is provided with slots 11, through which the bolts 12 pass, that secure said bearing upon its pillowblock or support 13. Said slots permit a movement of said bearing whereby the pulley 9 is moved into or out of operable frictional contact with wheel 8, and for the purpose of so moving said bearing, 1 provide a crank-lever 14, for which suitable bearings 15 are provided upon said pillow-block. Crank 1 1 is connected to the box or bearing 10 by means of a link 16, whereby said box may be moved in such manner that said pulley 9 is placed in operable contact with the lateral face of said wheel 8, or moved out of such contact or engagement therewith.
In order that the actuation of pulley 9 may be suitably convenient, I extend the rod or shaft 17, in which crank 1 1 is formed, to the samson-post 3, and form the end of said rod into a suitable lever 18, for actuative purposes. The shaft of pulley 9 is connected to one end of the worm-shaft 6 by means of transmission-shaft 19, which is supplied with universal joints 20, so that irregularities of alinement cause no dithculty in the application or use of my powertransmission device, and this renders the same applicable to various forms and constructions of drilling-rigs.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of transmission, wherein shaft 6 is supplied with a sprocket-wheel 21, and the shaft 22, upon which pulley 9 is mounted and keyed, is also supplied with a properly related and alined sprocket-wheel 23. A suitably lo cated bearing as 2 1, is provided for-the errtended end of said shaft 22. A chain passes about the sprockets 21 and 23 whereby power is transmitted from shaft 22 to shaft 6, for the purpose of revolving drum 1. This modified form merely contemplates the substitution of a chain-drive for the shaft drive shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
. The power generally employed in the op erati'on of drilling-rigs is usually a steamengine Which is supplied With the link motion for reversing the engine, and because of this provision, my power-device is adapted to be operated to both raise and lower the drill, that is, its motion is reversible.
Referring to Fig. 4:, it Will be noted that the feed cable 25 passes from the drum 1 upward and over tWo pulleys 26,.one only being shown-which are located, one upon either side of the walking-beam 27. Said pulleys 26 are mounted upon the gudgeon or pivotal support 28 of said beam. From this point said feed cables each pass over a pulley 29,one only being shown-Which are located upon opposite sides of the outer end of said Walking-beam, and from Which point said cables pass downwardly and each has its respective end attached to an equalizing device 30, one only of which is shown;
said equalizing devices carry the drill-cable tackle 31, as fullyexplained in my Letters Patent above referred to.
1. In a feed device for drilling rigs, a Walking-beam, a support upon Which said beam is oscillatively mounted, a revoluble, power-driven element arranged to impart oscillative motion to said beam, pivotal pulleys, one mounted upon either side of said beam at the pivotal point thereof, terminal element, feed cables attached'to said drum and passing over said pivotal and said terminal pulleys, means connected to said cables arranged to equalize the tension thereon, and, means carried bysaid cables adapted for the attachment of a drilling cable.
2. In a feed device for a drilling rig which comprises among its elements, a walk ing-beam and a band-Wheel-actuated crank operably connected to said beam, a support for said beam, a pulley mounted upon each side of said beam upon the pivotal support thereof, terminal pulleys aiiixed to the outer end of said beam upon either side thereof, a drum mounted upon said support, a Worm gear arranged to revolve said drum, means arranged to transmit motion from said crank-actuating band-Wheel to said Worm, for the purpose of revolving said drum, feed cables attached to said drum and passing over said terminal and pivotal pulleys, means attached to said cables arranged to. equalize the tension thereon, and means carried by said equalizing device for the attach ment of a drilling cable.
