FPADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1am.
Application-filedMarch 31, 1914. Serial No. 828,515.
Toaall whom-it may concern: 7 U 'Beit known that 1, EVAN J. SHIPMAN, a
'jQltlZGIljfOf the UnitediStates, residing in New Haven, county 01 New Haven, and
Stateof Connecticut, have invented "certain newand useful-Improvements 1n Padlocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
This invention relates to padlocks, and
more particularly to padloc'ks provided with registering mechanism whereby the number ofti'mes that the padlock, is actuated [during a seertain' :period is visuallyindicated on the epadlock itself.
.wP-ad-loc 'k's of this kind are intended to "facilitate the tracing of thefts.
My "improvements relate ,more, especially to refgisteri-ng padlocks -of the pm tumbler type.
- lf he{- pri mai-y object of the invention is-to provide improvedandsimplified means "for -of parts to be 1 hereinafter fdescr'ibe'd and 111 the -accompanying drawm'g, F gure 1 isaifront elevation ofa padlock embodying ,my improvements, with the shackle closed. Fig.2 is a similar view, with the shackle open. f-Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lock mechanism removed from the case of the ,padlock, looking from "the front "Figs. 4
aud 5 are'end views ofFig.3. 'Fi-gfG isa ':'view similar to Fig. *3,"with"th'e registering -dial"om itted. Figf tl is a fragmentary view 6, showing the dialfa'ctuating'lpawl in a different position. 'Fig'. 7 is a section on line 7 7 ofFi'gf3, and 'Fi'gQS is a rearview o f thedialdetached. a t
Referring to the drawingyl have shown my improvements appliedto apadlockh'avingfacase 10, and a sliding "shackleil, "The j*padlock selected for illustration is er the,
"Igener'al'type set forth in Patent No." 729,? 92,
' granted to Sargent; &"Company, on June2, 11903, as assignee' of'Aflbert'A; Page, 'andthe "pin tumbler lock o'r-secu1=-in andreleasing the sha'cklell' com rises a case 12 carried by 'the' 'faceplate, or bottom plate 13," and a key, plug, or barrel 14c rotatable in 'aniopening in the face plate, and adapted to cooperate with the usual key 15.
The mechanism for locking and releasing the shackle is not illustrated in detail, as it is fully shown in the patent above mentioned, and for the same reason it has been considered unnecessary to illustrate the means iior securing the pin tumbler lock mechan- 1sm inthe case 10.
In accordance with my invention, the key plug 14 is adapted to actuate a pawl, or the llke, each time the shackle isreleased, which pawl in turnactuates a registering dial having members which are successively visible through'an openmg 1n the case wall, as the dial is turned on its axis. In the form shown, the case 12 of the pin tumbler lock is V cutaway at 16 to expose the key plug 145 and permit attachment to the key plug of a lug 17, -which maybe secured to the cylindrical wallofthe plug by means of a small screw 18. A pin 19eXtendingperpendicularly to with a notch 21 adapted to engage the lug 17 on the key plug, in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and 6 the arrangement being such that when the lug 17 is moved to the right relativelyto Fig. 6,the end 20 of the pawl 20'1s moved downward, whereas when the lug '17 moved in the opposite direction, the end 'QO ISTQtUIHGCl to its elevated positI'OIL'SllOWIl in Fig. 6.
The pin 19 not only serves as a pivot for thepawl 20, but also as an arbor for a registering dial 22. The rear face of the dial 22 'is provided with notches or ratchet teeth 23, adapted 'to be engaged by the end 20 of the pawl 20,: such end 20 being suitably "shaped for that purpose, as shown in Fig. 4.
"Hence, as the pawl is moved from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. 6 the dial 22 is turned clockwise.
On the return movement of the pawl 20*, a check "pawl 24secured to the case 12, by a screw 25, engagesone of the notches 23, and prevents correspondmg movement of the dial 'so that as the key plug is actuated to open thepadlocka number of times, the dial 22 is rotated intermittently in a clockwise direction with reference to Fig. 3. The outer or front face of the dial 22 carries suitable members adapted to be brought successively mto register with an opening 26 in the front wall of the case.- Supposing the parts to be r in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the number 6 appearing through the opening 26 in the case, the movement of the key plug 14;, incident to the release of the shackle,
moves the dial 22 (by means of the pawl to an extent suilicient to present" the number tion of a shackle, pin tumbler lock mecha- 'nism for securing and releasing the same,
including a key plug, a registering dial, said dial being spaced from and substantially coextensive w th the plug, and mechanism cooperating with the key plug and dial forjactuating the said dial with the key plug,
substantially as described.
2. In a registering pad-lock, the combination of a shackle, pin tumbler lock mecha-.
nism for securing and releasing the same, including a key plug, a case inclosing said lock mechanism, a pawl pivotally mounted on said case, a member projecting from the key plug to the exterior ofsaid case adapted to rock the pawl, and a registering dial adjacent the pawl adapted to be actuated through the medium of the pawl upon a movement of the key plug, substantially as described. V
