Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nec. as, i915.
Application led October 30, 1914. Serial No. 869,393.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR D. KLEIN- s'rnUnR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Municipal-Service Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. i
My invention consists in whatis herein particularly set .forth with reference to the `accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims' of this specification, its object beingfto provide-economical all metal municip'aI-:service posts of advantageous constr otioii lby whichto facilitate their erec- `tio and handling, as well as accessto hol- Y `las ephone apparatus, and telephone apparav "lo sections of the same; one of said sections "each post being preferably organized for y:tli' installation therein of `separately acces- "r-alarm apparatus, police signal and tu "for the use of municipal oicials and` empllf'oyeesjv in general.
lFigures 1 and 2 of the drawings are respectively-indicated by lines 1-1 and 2--2 inFig. 3, and each represents a half sectional sideelevation of one of my improved municipal service boxes; Figs. 3 and 4 represent horizontal sectional views respectively indicated by lines 3-3 and 4 4 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5, .represents a similar view indicated byline 5-5 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6, represents a sectional view of a detail of the post indicated by line 6-6 in Figs. 2 and 5.
All the matching sections of the herein described post are of cast-metal, four sided and hollow, their general exterior ornamental shaft-section 8 and this shaft-section is fastened by screws 13 to a vertical upper flange 14 of the base, the joint being weathertight. A portion of one side of the base and of the shaft-section 8 is a removable panel 15 that sets in against vertical facing flanges 16 adjacent to an openingin said base and shaft sections to exclude moisture. The
panel 15 is provided with lower inner hooks 17 that pass through interruptions 18 of the flanges 16 and catch on said flanges, as is best shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the upper end of s aid panel being fastened bya screw 19 agalnst a facing flange 20v in the shaft-section 8. To facilitate manipulation of said panel, the same is provided with an outwardly open socket 21 in which to engage the hand of an operator.
The upper end of the shaft-section 8 abuts a continuous horizontal flange 22 in the upper shaft-section 9, the joint of the two shaft-sections being weather-tight, and said shaftsections are suitably fastened together, the fastening means shown being screws 23 extending through inner ears 24: and the flange 22 of the shaft-section 9 into walls of the shaft-section 8.. w
The box-.sectionl is set on the upper shaft-section 9, the joint being weathertight, and the two are suitably fastened together, the fastening means shown being screws 25 extending through a continuous horizontal inner flange 26 of the box into ears 27 of said shaft-section. Three sides of the box are shown open, and the openings are closed by doors 28, 29, 30, in hinge-connection with said box and provided with locks 28, 29 and 30', respectively. Over each opening, the vbox is providedwith a weather shedding hood 31 that is shown held in place by screws 32, and each door closes lweather-tight in a wall depression of said Set onthe upper end of the box 10 is the cap 11, the vjoint being weather-tight, and screws 33 are shown as means for fastening said cap in place. The apex of the cap is provided with a socket in which to secure (by screw-threading or otherwise) the shank of an ornament 311 or al signal xture, such fixtures having been employed in connection with municipal service posts.
The box 10 is shown provided with upper and 'lower parallel webs 35 crossing said box in one direction central of the same, and each web is provided with a central vertical rib -36 and with a vertical flange 37 at a terminal of the rib: A fire-alarm box 38 is fastened to the flanges 37 of the webs 35 to be accessible througha doorway in the box 10 of the post, and opposite backings apparatus, are held in place within said box by bolting through the ribs 36 of the same, a set of bolts 39 with washers and nuts thereon being shown in Fig. 1.
One of the backings 38 in the post-box 10 is designed for the support of telephone and signal apparatus for the exclusive use of a municipal police force, and the other of said backings is intended for the support of telephone apparatus for the use of various municipal oiiicials and employees to communicate with various municipal departments through a suitably located central station, access to the fire-alarm, police service and general service apparatus being had through dili'erent doorways of said postbox.
.ing been removed and electrical connections broken, the post and its contents may be readily moved off its site to permit of uncovering electric conductor conduits or other work about said site, the moving of said post being easily accomplished by two men, whereas a gang of men is required to remove an ordinary intact municipal service post from its site. A y
Itwill be observed that the shaft section 8 has its upper end telescopically connected,
with the depending base portion of the connecting section 9, and that said connecting section 9 has its upper end telescopically connected with the depending base portion of the box section 10. Such connections are made rigid by meansr of the screws 23 and 25 and the flanges 22 and 26. This manner of connecting the sections is a Weatherproof one, and also permits the sections to be readily separated by releasing the screws 23 and 25.
I claim:
l. A municipal signaling station Jformed -in sections one a section thereof provided with inner upper and lower horizontal webs each provided with a vertical rib and with a vertical flange at a terminal of the rib,'a fire-alarm box fastened to said anges, bolts extending through said ribs, and4 opposite backings of telephone and signal apparatus fastened on the bolts, the lire-alarm box and other apparatuses being accessible through separate openings in the section for which closures are provided.
2. A structure of the class described com-i i 5 prising a plurality of superimposed hollow sections the uppermost of which forms a receiving compartment and is provided with door openings, doors for said openings and means disposed inthe interiors of the sections for locking their meeting ends together A 'whereby the sections may be disconnected only upon access being had through said compartment doors:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, inthe presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR D. KLEINSTEUBER.
