To all tohom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CARVER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Lantern-Slide- Projecting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for projecting pictures, and has for an object'to provide a means for automatically projecting a series of pictures,'such as lantern slides or the like, upon a suitable curtain or screen. 7 The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device for automatically projecting upon a curtain or screen a succession of pictures or slides which are automatically fed into projecting position and automatically removed from projecting position, the invention to this end contemplating various improvements in lantern slide projecting machines embodied in an application for United States patent, entitled Automatic lantern slide projecting machine, filed by me December 2, 1914, Serial No. 875,149.
In the ordinary use of a projecting ma-' chine it is customary to insert and remove the slides from projecting position by hand or by means of a sliding holder which is of a duplex nature in that it can accommodate two and sometimes more slides at one time for successive projection. In my device I aim to provide a structure which permits of the successive projection of slides upon screens, the arrangement of the slides prior to and after projection being such that the slides will be automatically carried into projecting position and automatically removed therefrom, the invention to this end embodying the use of a driving medium fora slide operating mechanism which may be either of a constant or intermittent operation to accomplish the desired result.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which: n

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a casing 10 which is preferably made in two sections. 11 and 12 suitably hinged together, with the front section 11 carrying the usual projecting apparatus 13 and a driving element 14, the rear section 12 having a platform. 15 upon which is carried the illuminating member 16 for supplying light to the projecting apparatus. The front section has a series of toothed wheels 17 journaled therein and over which pass a. chain-like slide advancing member 18, this construction being somewhat similar to what is shown in the co-pending application mentioned heretofore and consisting, more particularly, of a plurality of continuous chains 19 which, through the medium of suitable connecting elements 20, are geared with or connected to the driving element 14 so as to result in either an intermittent or continuous operation of the slide advancing member. A series of projections 21 in the nature of platforms extend from the chains 19 of the slide advancing member and are adapted to engage a slide 23, said slide having pins 22 projecting therefrom and which are adapted to operate in guideways 22 formedin the sides of the casing.

section near its lower end and in alinement with the projecting-apparatus 13 is a slide supporter 24 formed in the nature of a cas= ing and which supports the slide in interposed position between the projecting apparatus and the illuminating member 16 so that the projection of the slide upon the screen will be properly insured. Connecting with the slide supporter and extending upwardly therefrom is acurved chute 25', the upper end of which is disposed adjacent to a suitable platform 26 preferably provided with an opening 27 said platform, furthermore, connecting with a slide container 28 in which a number of the slides 23 are arranged in superposed position.
Now referring to the views, 1t w1ll 'be clearly seen that when the slide advancing mechanism 18 is actuated, the projections2l thereon,will engage the shde 1n the sllde supporter and remove the slide from the slide supporter to raise the same upwardly to the entrance of the slide container 28, a
suitable ledge-30 being provided on the slide container 28 to trip the slide in order to remove it from the slide advancing mechanism and permit the slide to gravitate down an inclined plane 31 intothe sllde-container.
It willbe seen that the slide is guided by the pins 22. operating in the guideways 22, the slide being supported by the platforms 21 projecting from the chains 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and that the ledge 30 Wlll aid in'tilting the slide when it reaches the upper end or entrance to the container, said slide, however, being guided in its tllting' movement by the wall of the container.
I Suitably journaled to rotate in'the front. section -11 of the casing 10 is a wheel-l1ke member 32 connecting with the shde advancing mechanism 18 to be rotated thereby, said member 32 carrying a pro ecting pin or length of time depends entirely upon the speed of rotation of -the slide advancing mechanism or its intermittent or constant movement, a plurality of thepro ections on the said'slide advancingfmechamsm W111 engage the slide and, raising thesame from the supporter, will remove it from projecting position and advanc'e'fthe same to the entrance of the slide container. At this 'point the slide will be tripped by the ledge and the wall of the container, which the slide engages, as mentioned heretofore, and be deposited in the slide container. As shown, the' slide container is provided with a filling opening-28 to insure proper loading of the container prior to operating the machine for the purpose of projecting the desired slide upon the screen.

structed somewhat on the lines of the' chainlike slide carrying mechanism shown in my application filed December 2, 1914, although it will be clearly understood that I do not limit myself to the particularform shown and that various slight changes may be made from the construction set forth in the drawings without departing fromlthe spirit of I the invention.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I show'a slightly modified form of my invention and in which in-- stance, instead of the plunger 34, I provide a rod 36 pivoted to the member 32 and WhlCh'IOd 36 is in pivotal engagement with a sliding and tilting tray 37 having up wardly extending ledges 38 adapted to en gage the lowermost slide 23 which will be deposited'in the tray, the tray being then tilted so that the slide can pass down the chute intp the slide exhibitingmasin '24. Projecting from the sides of each sli e 23 are plates 39 which are engaged bythe ledges 38 when the tray 37 slides forwardly ranged to extend horizontally across the casing 28 from each side to hold'the lowermost slide against movement into the tray until the slide is tilted on the edge of the tiltingplate when the slide is moved forwardly by the ledges 38. In Fig. 9 I show a modified form of slide operating mechanism taking the place of what is shown in Fig. 7 and in this instance it will beseen that there is a horizontal shaft 41 carrying a toothed wheel 42 over which operates a chain 42 connecting with the usual chain operating mechanism or driving member shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of the shaft 41 carrying beveled toothed wheels 43 meshing with beveled toothed wheels 44 on vertical shafts 45, each of which is formed with a worm or spiral conveyer 46, the shafts 45 being suitably journaledin the frame or casing of the machine. Now it will be seen that the plates 23 will be supported by the spiral conveyers 46 and in view *of the fact that the toothed wheel 42 is geared with respect to the driving member to a certain proportion, the spiral conveyers will be rotated a complete revolution at certain intervals and each time thatthe spiral conveyers rotate a revolution the lowermost slide 23 supported by the lowermost convolution of the conveyers will be dropped therefrom and will thus slide down the incline or chute 25,= the structure shown. in

37 and 40 being in this instance dispensed with as is also the platform or ledge 26 shown in Fig. 5. Therefore, with the structure shown in Fig. 9 the slide, when dropped by the conveyers, will gravitate down the chute and into position in front of the condensing lens of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I
1. A lantern slide projecting machine comprising a casing, a pro ecting apparatus in said casing, a slide supporter disposed in the line of projection of said apparatus, a slide container, a combined platform and chute connecting said slide container with said slide supporter for assuring the advancementof a slide fro-m the container to the supporter, means automatically operated for removing the slide from the container and initially advancing the said slide toward the supporter, and means for periodically operating said last-named means.
2. A lantern slide projecting machine comprising a casing, a projecting apparatus in said casing, a slide supporter disposed in the line of projection of said apparatus, a
slide container, a combined platform and chute connecting said slide container with said slide supporter forassuring the ad vancement of a slide from the container to the supporter, means automatically operated for removing the slide from the con- .chute connecting said slide container with tainer and initially advancing the said slide toward the supporter, means for periodically operating said means, and a slide advancing said slide supporter for assuring the advancement, of a slide from the container to the supporter, means automatically operated for removing the slide from the container and initially advancing the said slide toward 5 the supporter, means for periodically operating said means, a slide advancing mechanism for engaging and removing an exhibited slide in the supporter therefrom and advancing said slide to said slide container, saidmeans for operating said first-named means having connection with said slide advancing mechanism, and means for removing the slide from the slide advancing mechanism to permit of said slide being advanced back into said slide container.
4. A lantern slide projecting machine comprising a casing, a projecting apparatus in said casing, a slide supporter disposed in the line of projection of said apparatus, a slide container, a combined platform and chute connecting said slide container with said slide supporter for insuring the advancement of a slide from the container to the supporter, a plunger for removing the 1m slide from the container and initially advancing the slide toward the supporter, and means for periodically operating said plunger.
