To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM C. STEWART, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at S'wampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack-Pulling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to tack pulling machines and more particularly to machines of this type which are employed for removing insole tacks.
Insole tacks are generally driven through the insole into the last of the .shoe with the head of the tack embedded deeply in the sole, and the object'of the present-invention is to provide a machine of a simple and comp act construction which removes these tacks with certainty and rapidity. With this object in view, the several features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from'the following description.
In the accompanying drawings Figure -1 represents a side elevation of a machine embodying the several features of the invention in their preferred forms; Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 2'2 of Fig. 1, illustrating an elevation of the tackpulling mechanism and positioning device; Fig. 3 is a section upon the'line 3 -3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a view partially diagrammatic, showing 'the location of the tack and the path of the tool.
The machine shown in the illustrated embodiment of the invention is provided with a rotary tack pulling tool supported with its axis of rotation located substantially parallel to the tack to be removed, and means for positioning the tack to be removed in the path of the tack engaging edge of the tool.
In the simplest and most efficient form of the invention which has yet been devised, the tool is provided with a tack engaging edge positioned radial to the axis-of rotation of the tool and located whollv one side thereof. The tack pulling tool 1 is se- Specification of LettersPatent.

cured in any suitable manner to the lower end of a shaft 2 journaled vertically in bearings 3 formed in the machine frame 1. The shaft 2'is driven by a pulley 6 connected-to a source of power through a belt 7 passing over an idler pulley 9. The tack is located in the path of the pulling tool 1 by a positioning device consisting ofa'foot 10 adjustably secured in the head 11 clamped to the lower'bearing 3. As shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 4, the tack engaging edge of the tool is positioned wholly at one side of the axis of rotation, thus causing the edge to be moved in a circumferential path toward and away from the tack to be removed when the tool is rotated.
When removing insole tacks from a shoe it is desirable to impart tack engaging and tack pulling movements to the tool toward and from thesole to cause the tool to engage beneath the head of a tack and positively remove it. To this end, the shaft 2 is slidingly mounted in the bearings 3 and is provided with a peripheral cam 13 secured to its upper end, which imparts axial movements to the tool during a continuous rotation of the shaft. This is accomplished by a cam roll 14 engaging with the peripheral cam and journaled upon a relatively stationary por tion of the machine. To this end the cam roll 1& is journaled upon an arm 15 fulcrumed at 16 and connected at its opposite end to a treadle 17 through a connecting rod 18. The movement of the .treadle in opposite directions is limited by a pair of adjustable stop collars 20 and 21 engaging with opposite sidesof a stationary head 22 through which the concurately determined.
