Description
Curtis Mi'ller- PATENTED JUN 27 1871 Attachment to Reaping Machines J t j mun UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CURTIS MILLER, OF LINCOLN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J. R. ROYER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BINDERS PLATFORMS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,471, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (JURTIs MILLER, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Arrangement or Improvement to be attached to the ordinary Platform of Reaping-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a table or platform on which the cut grain is lodged by the ordinary raking device onto a raised table over a tight bottom of a car attachment, to prevent the waste of grain and to facilitate the bind ing by hand; said car attachment and platform or binders table being made adjustable so as to adapt it to various conditions of soil or diversity of the ordinary platforms on reapers.
The accompanying drawing will illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the car attachment. Gr represents an ordinary platform attached to reaping-machines. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, shown vertically in part.
A brief explanation, with reference to the letters marked upon the drawing, will enable any one skilled in the art to make and use my invention.
G shows an ordinary platform. K, a metallic plate, of zinc or other material, to close the joint, by overlapping the car at its hinged junction to the car in order to yield sufficiently so as to adapt it to the ordinary undulations of the soil and yield in turning under said metallic plate K. This car has adjustable side beams A, which support the caster-wheels w, or their equivalents; and said beams A are made adjustable at various points between the sills s and top pieces e by means of headed screw-bolts or otherwise. The permanent bottom H of the car is tight to hold any grains that may lodge in it. Over this tight bottom there is a binders table or platform, F, with open side spaces, in which the binders stand, shown in Fig. 1 by the letter H, on each side. There is, also, a seat on each side for the accommodation of the binders, marked D l), and a hinged raised table, E, on which the sheaves are bound with more convenience. The binders or gathering-table F has cross-pieces at each end beneath, projecting, shown at I, and also made adjustable by screw bolts.
This car can be attached and adjusted to any of the ordinary platforms on reaping-machines having a side delivery. It is light and not connected by any machinery, being simply calculated for the comfort and convenience of the binders, as also to collect much of the grain that necessarily falls out in handling and is otherwise wasted.
I am aware that various attachments to reaping-machines have been used for divers objects, but I am not aware that any has been used arranged in the manner and for the purpose specified.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the wheel supports A A, when made adjust-able between the sills s and the top piece 0, in combination with the adjustable binders platform F, hinged table E, on a car, attached to ordinary platforms of reaping-machines, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
CURTIS MILLER.
