Description

JOHN E. COCHRAN, 0F SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
AIR-COOLING' DEVICE.
y Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. lid, 1915.
Application filed-October 1, 1914. Serial No. 864,392.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the count-y of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Cooling Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates tov air cooling devices and has for its object the provision of a device adapted for attachment to an ordinary electric fan and so arranged that the blast of air from said fan will cause movement of a carrier which will present within the path of said air successive layers of water by which the air is cooled.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be setl forth in the detailed description which now follows Y ln the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side view of the device showing it mounted upon a fan. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the water retaining casing, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rotative carrier, hereinafter described.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing. Referring to the drawing the numeral designates an ordinary electric fan comprising the usual skeleton guard frame 6 and fan blades 7. The invention resides in an attachment for such fan comprising a ring or band 8 of sheet metal such as tin having its sides partially closed by plates 9 which together with the band constitute a water receiving compartment 10.
A bearing post 1l is carried byone of the plates and serves as a mounting for a rotative carrier 12 comprising a' hub 12, a peripheral -band 13 and foraminous radial vanes 14 extending therebetween preferably formed of Wire gauze and set at such an angle that the blast of air from the fan will cause the carrier to rotate. Therefore as the blades 14 are successively passed through the water contained in the compartment 10 they elevate a limited amount of water in the form of a film into the path of the blastv of air from the fa-n. through this film of cooled.
It is a well known fact that it is not desirable to permit the blast of a fan to blow directly upon a person and many devices have been invented for deflecting the blast from a direct path. rlhe hereindescribed device will eliiciently serve such purpose and will at the same time utilize the power exerted by the blast when its direction of movement is changed to elevate the film of water as hereinbefore set forth.
To hold the attachment in place a piece of wire is provided the bight portion of which is passed through holes 15 formed in The air in passing band 13 and the terminal ends of which arev bent to hook formation at 16 and engaged with the rear edge of the skeleton guard frame 6. Y v
'hlle the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim'is:-
rlhe combination with an electric fan and its usual skeleton guard of a water receptacle comprising a band and plates partially closing the sides thereof, hooks carried by said band and engaged with said guard to secure the receptacle to the front of the fan, a bearing post carried by the receptacle and a rotative carrier journaled upon the bearing post and comprising an annular rim and a plurality of vanes set at an angle to the line of blast from the fan, `said vanes being formed of wire gauze.
In testimony whereof ll affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
