SHIPPING-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 141, 1915.
Application filed April 29, 1914. Serial No. 835,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST M. Kaosn, a citizen of the United States. residing at Defiance. in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shipping cases, the present embodiment being particularly designed and adapted for use in the transportation and storage of merchandise packed in containers, cartons, or the like, such for example, as granulated sugar and similar or analogous substances.
The invention relates more particularly to improvements in the construction and reinforcement of the upper and lower marginal edges of the case body and means for securing and supporting the lid or cover and bottom in position whereby these portions of the case are greatly strengthened and rendered less liable to injury as well as improving the general construction whereby general strength and stability is given to the case body as a whole.
A further object is the provision ofa case of this class having an unobstructed interior whereby the containers or cartons may be readily inserted or removed as well as the provision of an improved reinforced bottom adapted to provide a suitable friction bearing surface as well as preventing the depression or sagging of the bottom by the weight of the superposed case contents.
A still further object is the provision of an improved hinged lid or cover having a depending peripheral beading adapted to take over, surround and abut against the heading at the upper edges of the casebody when the lid is closed whereby a second strengthening beading is formed about the beading of the case body thus giving general strength and stability to the upper marginal edges of the case when the lid is closed.
A still further object is the provision of an improved hinged lid or cover together with improvedmeans for locking and sealthe same in closed position.
With' the above mentioned and other ends n v ew, the invent on cons stsjinthe novel constru tion arrangemen and sail-simia lid or cover. Fig. 3. a cross sectional view of.
a modified form of hinge.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved casecomprises suitable lateral or side and end walls 1, and a bottom wall 2, said lateral walls 1, being preferably curled about a wire 3, to form a bottom supporting and strengthening beading, and as a means for connecting and reinforcing the bottom and lateral walls about the lower marginal edges of the case said bottom wall is preferablybent or curled about the beading at the lowermarginal edges of the lateral walls to form a second beading 3 As a means of furtherstrengthening and reinforcing the bottom 2', the latter is preferably crimped into a series'or plurality of reinforcing ribs or flanges 2*, extending up to and abutting againstthe beading 3, said ribs or flanges 2, extending flush with the floor engaging portions of the beading 3,
for the purpose of not only forming a convenient friction bearing surface but of supporting the intermediate portions of the bottom as against sagging from the weight of the superposed case contents.
The ribbed bottom wall 2, is similar in form and formation to the ribbed walls disclosed and claimed in Kruse Patent No.
870,728 of November 12th, 1907, and for the purpose of this application need not be further described in detail.
The upper marginal edges of the lateral walls 1, are curled over and about a wi re l, forming a lid supporting beading 5.
' The lid or cover 6, provided about its u narginal edges with a depending beading iii ela iag a st engthening 1 wir 7, sa d beading 6 being adapted to entirely surround and abut against the lid supporting beading 5, when the lid is closed as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings whereby a second strengthening beading is formed outside of the beading of the ease body and is adapted to further strengthen and reinforce the beading at the top of the case body.
As a means of hinging the lid or cover 6, to the case body, one side of the cover is provided with a pair of hinge straps 8, each strap comprising a single length of sheet metal bent upon itself and midway of its ends to form a hinge loop 8, taking over the lid supporting beading 5, of the. case and'the strengthening wire 7, of the lid, the ends of each strap being secured by a rivet S", as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Certain portions of the material of the lid supporting beading 5, and cover beading (Sgcorresponding in width to the width of the hinge straps are cut away forming hinge strap receiving recesses 8, to receive and contain the hinge loop portions'8-, of the hinge straps. If desired, however, the loop portion 8 of the hinge strap may be formed only about the strengthening \vire' 7,"of the beading 6 of the lid 7 or cover as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
As a means of securing the lid or cover in its closed position the free side of the latter may beprovided with latch or hasp members 9, terminating at their free ends in hooked loop heads 9 said members 9, being pivotally secured to the lid or cover 6, by being curled over and about the wire 7, of the lidor cover 6, and being mounted in cutaway recesses 9", in a manner similar to. the mounting and securing of the hinge straps 8, hereinbefore described.
As a means of securing the loop heads 9, of the latch or hasp members 9, in closed or locked position guide securing brackets 10, are provided, said brackets being providecl with openings or recesses 10 at their front to receive and contain the hooked heads or loop eyes 9*, of the latch members 9, when the latter are in their closed or locked position. and as a means for directing and pressing the hooked heads forwardly to snap into engagement with the recesses or openings 10*, of the bracket members as well as securely maintaining the members 9, in engagement with the brackets. bowed spring members 11, are secured to the case body at the rear of the members 9, and in the pres ent instance, arranged within the brackets 10. It will be seen that the loop heads 9*, when within the openings or recesses 10, of the brackets 10. form wire receiving loop eyes through which sealing wires 12, are adapted to pass and which wires 12, may be passed at the rear of the members 9, and be secured by means-of seals 13, so that the case contents are thereby securely sealed. When it is desired to detach the latch or hasp members 9, the loop heads 9, may be readily pressed out of engagement with the openings 10, of the brackets by the thumbs of the hands while the latter are in engage ment with the adjacent front corners of the case and as the hooked heads are pressed rearwardly against the resistance of the springs 11, the loop heads 9, may be simultaneously pressed upwardly to partially elevate the free edge of the lid or cover in the act of releasing the head 9, from the brackets 10.

1. In a shipping case, the combination with a case body provided about its upper marginal edges with a lid supporting beading; of a hinged lid or cover provided with a depending peripheral beading surrounding and abutting against the latter in substantially the same plane and inclosing a reinforcing wire, and hinge and hasp straps pivotallv mounted on said reinforcing wire of said lid or cover whereby the latter is secured in its closed position, said hinge and hasp straps being secured to said case body below said lid supporting beading and abutting against the same.
2. In a shipping case, a case body having a rectangular shaped lid supporting beadin g inclosing a wire and a cover having a similarly shaped beading inclosing a wire, said cover normally resting on said lid supporting beading, and said cover beading fitting down outside of and surrounding and abutting again t said lid supporting heading in substantiallv the same horizontal plane when the lid is closed, said cover beading being also provided at one side with a pair of cutaway hinge strap receiving recesses, and hinge straps bent mid-way of their ends forming hinge loops resting in said hinge strap receiving recesses and extending about said wire inclosed by said cover beading, said hinge straps extending beneath and abutting against the outer sides of said lid supporting beading and being secured to the case body beneath said lid supporting beading.
3. In a shipping case, the combination with a case body having the upper marginal edges of its lateral walls curled about a reinforcing wire forming a lid supporting beading, and a lid resting on the latter and having its marginal edges curled about a reinforcing wire forming a second beading abutting against and resting in substantially the same horizontal plane with said lid In testimony whereof I have afiixed my supporting beading; of hinge straps sesignature in presence of tWo Witnesses. cured to one of said lateral Walls below and AUGUST M. KRUSE. abutting against said lid supporting beading Witnesses:
