SWITCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 14, 1915. j
Application aieamvember 2s, 1914. seriaiiio. 873,466.
To all whom it may concern:`
Be it known that I, PAUL HOTCHKIN, residing at Chicago, in the county'of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
construction suitable to be used inconjunction with a lighting system, for illuminating show-cases, display counters, and similar structures, but it of course will be obvious after an understanding thereof is had that the device is Well adapted for other uses as well as those mentioned.
The primary object of my invention is the ycounter structure and receive the conduit either from above or below.
Still another object is the provision of a switch box 'that is adapted to be fitted with a push button switch of any of the wellknown commercial types. And further objects are the provision of a switch-box that is inexpensive to manufacture, effectivein performing the various functions for which it is designed, and which is neat and attractive in appearance.
These and other objects I prefer to accomplish, by the means and in 'the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein,
Figure 1 is a vertical front elevation of my switch-box installed as a right hand fitting at the lower end of an electric conduit for a show case lighting system. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal central section of my switch box taken on line 2-2, Fig. l, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, the switch being shown in full elevation therein.
Referring to the drawings, similar reference characters iifidicate the saine parts throughout the several figures. y
In. the drawings i represents a Vertical My invention relates to a switch-box of a standard or rear corner post of a show-case or displayv counter that has the metal tube or conduit 6 from the lighting system thereof disposed upon and secured to its outer surface in any suitable manner so that its lower end terminates adjacent the Hoor upon which the show case is placed. My switch box, ywhich is adapted to be connected to this lower end of the conduit, preferably comprises a housing or casing of substantially rectangular shapeand consists of a bottom or rear wall 7, end walls 8 and 9, and longitudinal side walls 10 and 11 all preferably formed integrally of one piece of cast metal.
End wall 9 is preferably slightly shorter than the opposite end wall and is provided with a lateral extension 12 that projects at right angles thereto and is of substantially the same relative dimensions as said end wall 9, that is, it is of same width as said walland projects therefrom a distance `approximately corresponding with the depth of said wall. The longitudinal sides of the extension are flared upwardly to provide lips or flanges 13 extending the length thereof and are of a height suflicient to bring their upper outer surfaces flush with the outer edges of the side walls 10 and 11 of 'which they are adapted to form an extension or continuation.
At the outer end of extension 12 is formed a hollow substantially cylindrical embossment 14 that is preferably offset therefrom a suitable distance and is cast integral therewith as shown. The longitudinal wall of this embossment is preferably thickened for the purpose of forming a vertical shoulder 15 the function of which will hereinafter more fully appear. Opposite the shoulder 15 and adjacent the extension 12 the wall of the embossment is cut away to form a longitudinal vertical slot '16. Screw lugs 17 and 18 are cast inte ral respectively with end wall 8 adjacent its outer edge and at the juncture between the end wall 9 and the f extension for the purpose of supporting a switch 19 of any suitable design. A longitudinally elongated metal plate 20 is employed as a cover for the switch box and is provided with openings through which the push buttons of the switch pass and which has its longitudinal edges and its end edge adjacent wall 8 overhang the walls of the switch box substantiallgg as shown. The edge g titi of the cover plate adjacent the embossment 14 is preferably flared outwardly as shown at 21 to close the slot 16 in said embossment. Said cover plate lits snugly over the walls of the box and the iiared edges of the eX- tension.
Embossment 14; is bored out longitudinally and has its end internally threaded, the upper end to receive the conduit 6 and the lower end closed by a suitable plug 22, which latter is adapted to be removed and tapped into the opposite end of said embossment when the conduit is secured to the end opposite that shown.
in installing the boX l preier to cut a shallow recess 23 in the adjacent portion of the standard or post for the purpose of seating the extension and after placing the same therein to secure it in place by a screw 23 passing through the extension and a screw 24 passing through thecorner formed by the juncture between said extension and the adjacent end wall of the box. rlhe wires w and y from the conduit 6 pass into the embossment through the hollow extension, through the switch and switch-box and leave the same through an insulated opening 25 in the rear or bottom wall as will be seen.
While l have herein illustrated and described certain specific means for carrying out my invention, it of course will be obvious to others skilled in the art to which it pertains, that various modifications or reinements thereof are possible without materially departing from the spirit ot my invention. .ll therefore desire it understood that all such obvious changes or modilications are contemplated within the scope of my invention as expressed in the following claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
