One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical paper feeding mechanism coacting with the platen rollerwith means whereby the mechanism may be moved out of engagement with the platen roller when it is'desired to straighten or adjust the position of a sheet of paper at any time during the operation of the machine.
Another obiect of the invention is to provide mechanism of the above character whereby all of the paper feeding means associated with the platen roller may be moved out of engagement therewith simultaneously and by a single act of the operator.
A further object is to provide mechanism of the above character which will be easv to operate, cheap to manufacture and efiicient in use.
Other pbjects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown one of various possible embodi-' ments of this invention. Figure 1 is an elerational View of the platen carriage with parts broken awav and other parts removed for the sake of clearnesszFig. 2 is an end view of the carriage with the parts in nor mal position; Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view with the feed rollers out of engagement with the platen roller; and Fig. 4 is a plan View of a detail.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
As is well known to those familiar with the operation and practical use of typewriting machines. it is frequently necessary to replace a typewritten sheet in the machine in order to make changes or corrections of typographical errors or omissions, and it is quite diflicult to replace the paper in its previous relative position to the printing point. This is generally done by inserting the sheet in the usual manner and then actuating certain mechanism to release the feed rollers from their normal engagement with the paper; but this operation still leaves the paper clips and rollers carried thereby in engagement with the paper, so that it is clitficu lt to position the paper without further action on the part of the operator to raise the paper clips. The present invention is intended to overcome the above, among other, objections by providing a single means for simultaneously moving all the paper feeding rollers, paper clips, or other paper holding devices out of engagement with the paper carrier or platen roller, to such an extent that the paper may be adinsted accurately and quickly.
While the present invention is herein illustrated and will be hereinafter described with reference to its application to that form of machine known as the noiseless typewriter, it is. of course. to be understood that the carriage. with the parts carried thereby. could easily be applied to other makes of machines.
Referring now to these drawings in denioned in end plates 6 of the carriage, and its axle 7 is provided with a hand wheel 8 in order to rotate the platen roller.
Pivotally mounted on rods 9 securedto the end piates of the carriage are a plurallty of sets of brackets '10 carrylng pressure rollers 11 normally engaglng the -platen roller 5 through suitable openings 1n a paper trough 12. The rear arms of these brackets 10 are normally held down in engagement with an endwise movable bar 13 resting upon the upper surface of the upper guide rail of the carriage by means of pivotally mounted, double arm springs 14. -Th1s bar 1513 is provided at regular intervals with upwardly bent cam portions 15 which takeunder the rearwardly extending arms of the brackets 10 when the bar is moved endwlse to the left, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby carry- 2 ing-the rollers out of engagement with the I platen roller, asshown in Fig. 3. This bar 13 is actuated by means of a wedge-shaped cam 16 carried at one.end of a bell crank actuating lever 17 This cam engages a roller 18 carried on the bar 13, andthe rear end of the cam 16 is provided with a notch or recess 19, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby to hold the bar in shifted position. The actuating lever 17 is also provided with a cam 20 adjacent its pivotal support, which, with a similar cam at the opposite end of the carriage, engages the under side of supporting members 21 at o posite ends of the platen roller carrying a bar 22 between them upon which are mounted a plurality of paper clips 23. These clips, which are preferably two in number, are laterally adjustable along the bar 22 and are provided with paper feeding roller means 24,- each'compriswing a plurality of rollersiof diflerentsize, being frusto-conical in shape and having their axes inclined with respect to the axis of the platen roller, thereby to coact with the paper as the same is fed about the platen roller; these rollers serve to remove any intermediate bulge in the paper. The paper clips extend downward over the flat platen 4 in order to hold the paper, and also to catch the edge of the paper as it is delivered from the paper trough 12.
The supporting members 21 are mounted about the axles-of" the platen roller in such a manner as to permit a radial movement thereof when acted upon by the cam memhere 20 engaging the under side thereof, as
best shown in Fig. 3. This form of connection also permits the bar 22 carrying the paper clips to be rotated partially about the platen roller when in either normal or raised position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, in order that erasures may' be made upon the paper along the upper surface of the platen roller as -most convenient to the operator. .In order that the supports 21 of the bar 22 may be moved in unison, the cams 20- 'the paper is in the correct relative position.

The arms 21 carrying the supporting bar for the spring paper clips are held in normal position by means of springs 27, preferably one at each end of the platen roller, engaging pins 28 on the arms 21. In this manner varying amounts of paper may be inserted between the platen roller and the 7 clips, the latter moving bodily with their 89 support when necessary. The paper clips are of sufficient strength normally to maintain a proper pressure upon the paper when the usual two or three sheets are inserted, but should fifteen or twenty sheets be placed 35 upon the platen. the clips and their supports will move bodily away from the platen to accommodate this abnormal amount, and thereby relieve any undue amount of res-- sure upon the paper. These springs '2 are o notched at 29, in order to retain the arms or supports and the attached parts upright and still permit a forward rotation thereof for the purpose above described.
The operation and manner of use are substanti'ally as follows When it is desired to reinsert a sheet of paper in the carriage for the purpose of addingoi'changing certainimpressions thereupon, the sheet is inserted in the well-known manner between the paper trough l2 and the platen roller 5 and rolled into substantially the position desired. The usual alining scale or index. not herein shown, will indicate to the operator whether or not If the paper is not in the proper position, it may be necessary to move it not only into horizontal alinement, but also with respect to the vertical alinement as well, and in order to do this it is desirable to relieve all pressure exerted thereupon by the paper feeding mechanism. By actuating the lever 17, which can be conveniently done by pressing it back, the lower feed rollers 11 will be carried out of engagement with the platen I roller 5, due to the action of the cams 15 engaging the ends of the pivoted brackets 10 in opposition to the pressure exerted thereupon by the pivotally mounted springs 14. Simultaneously the cams 20 will raise the supports 21,- carrying therewith the bar 22 supporting the paper clips and paper clip rollers, to substantially the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. It is then a simple matter quickly and accurately to adjust the paper upon the platen roller, and when the desired position is obtained the operator merely releases pressure ;upon the, lever 17 and the parts are returned to normal position under the action of the several springs.
As above explained, however, the lever 17 may be forced back a sufiicient distance to permit the roller 18 to engage the recess 19, whereupon the rollers 'willbe' held out of engagement with the platen roller until the.
lever 17 is pulled forward a sufiicient distance to carr the parts 18 and 19 out of en.- gagement. hould the operator desire to make further corrections or erase a word or letter, it will be convenient to move the bar 22 with the paper clips carried thereby around to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, whereupon the upper surface of the platen roller will make a convenient erasing table. 4
It is thus seen that this invention provides for a simple and practical device which will be efficient in operation and easy to manipulate, accomplishing, among others, the objects and purposes hereinabove set forth. a a
As many changes could be made in the above construction, I and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In mechanism of the character described, in combination, a platen roller, a bar extending parallel with the same, paper clips carried by said bar, and means for simultaneously ,moving said bar and clips radially with respect to said platen roller to carry said paper chips ,out of engagement with saidroller.
2. In mechanism of the character described, in combination, a platenlroller, a bar extending along above said platen roller, paper clips, and a lever for raising said bar'to carry. said paper clipsout of. engagement with said platen roller.
3. In mechanism of the character described, incombination, a platen roller, a bar extending along above said platen roller, paper clips, a lever, and a cam cooperating therewith to .raise said barfto carry said rollers out of engagement with said platen roller. p

In mechanism of the character described, in combination, a platen roller, paper clips coacting therewith, a supporting bar for said clips, and means adapted to yieldingly hold said parts normal position, said means permitting said clips and bar to move bodily away from said roller when several thicknesses of paper are used.
