Improvement in Sad and Flu ting lrons.
Paten tedlune 20, l8 71. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoF.
JOSHUA E. swIFT, oF New YORK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD AND FLUTING IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,115, dated June 20, 1871.
- in fluting by unlatching the upper section and inserting the material between the corrugations or ribs upon the respective sections. In fluting-irons of this kind there is diflieulty in introducing the material, because the upper section of the flutes has to be held up with one hand while the fabric is manipulated by the other hand.
My invention is made for obviating this difficulty, and consists in a swinging fluted segment combined with a sliding bed upon the bottom section of the fluting-iron, the parts being so arranged that the segment can be swung clear of the sliding bed to give space for introducing the fabric freely, and adjusting it by the use of both hands, and then swinging said segment and sliding the bed in the act of fluting and I employ upon the said segmenta stop that holds the sliding bed from moving accidentally when the goods are being adjusted, thereby insuring the proper matching of the flutes when the segment is turned.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the iron with the segment swung aside for the reception of the fabric, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The bottom of this iron may or may not be employed as a smoothing-iron, and may be of any desired size or shape.
The base or lower section a of this iron is made to receive the bed I) that is formed with an upper fluted surface, and can be moved tran sversely across the bed a, between the rib 1 and the standard 0, and said bed 12 may be attached by a rivet or screw, at 3, in a slot in said bed I). The swinging fluted segment d is connected, by the end pieces 0 and f, with the handle g, and the rivet or screw h forms a center for segment (I to swing upon, and a means for attaching the same to the standard. 0. The turning or swinging movement of the segment dis limited by a segmental slot and pin, 2'; and a sliding bolt or pin, at k, may be employed to hold the parts from swinging when the handle g is above the rivet It, so that the article can be employed as an ordinary smoothing-iron.
When used for fluting the iron is to be heated, the segment at turned, and the bed b slid into the position shown in Fig. 1, and the fabric entered between the flutes and, upon swin ging the fluted segment d, the fabric will be fluted. as said segment 01 and bed b move together. By turning the segment 01 into the position of Fig. 1 the flutes will be separated after the bed I) has been slid to its extreme movement, and the projection 0 at the side of the segment (I will press against the edge of the sliding bed and arrest the movement of the segment, and also retain the bed bin position, so that the flutes will come properly together in performing the flutin g.
The pin 1' in the segmental slot serves to support the iron to when used as an ordinary smoothing-iron, and relieve the rivet or screw it of undue strain.
I claim as my invention 1. The swinging fluted segment d, in combination with the sliding bed I), handle g, and iron at c, substantially as set forth.
2. The stop 0 upon the swinging fluted segment at, in combination with the fluted sliding bed b and iron at c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The pin 2' in a segmental slot in the portion f of the handle, in combination with the pin or rivet h, smoothing-iron a, standard 0, and fluted segment d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 23d of May, A. D. 1871.
