To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Msxrnnann CHA Sonwninnnr, residing in West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and HENRY P. KRAFT, res1ding in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, citizens of the "United States, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pillow- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves for air pillows or the like and aims to provide certain improvements therein. in the best forms of such valves heretofore used there has been provided a valve tube whlch 18 designed to be connected to the pillow or other article to be inflated, and an elongated cap screwing upon such valve tube and a valvev proper swiveled thereto which is adapted to be pressed down over the end of said tube when the cap is screwed home. lln thls type of valve it is important that the parts be connected together so that they cannot be lost, and that the valve proper shall be swiveled to the cap so that the packing washer which forms .a part of the valve proper shall not be distorted when premed against its seat on the end of the valve tube by the inward rotation of the cap.
@ur invention provides a pillow valve or the like in which these desirable features are provided, in which the various parts are very economically constructed and in which such parts are much more durable than those in common use.
@ur invention also provides a novel method of swiveling the valve proper to the cap so that such valve proper may be moved at will, and the packing inspected or replaced.

Referring to the drawings let A 1 nd1cate a pneumatic pillow or any other device which it is desired to inflate, B the valve tube of cap our. invention having its lower end vulcanized within the neck C of the pillow A, and D the cap which carries the valve I B is screw-threaded near its outer end as shown at c, and near its inner end it is provideol with a groove d. The cap D is provided with a central bore and is internally screw-threaded substantially throughout the length of such bore as shown at 6. Near the lower end of the cap is arranged a short screw 7, the inner end of which 9 projects within the groove 05 of the valve tube, and
thus limits the outward movement of the cap. The groove 03 is sufiiciently wide (in the direction of the length of the tube B) to permit the cap D to be screwed and unscrewed the required extent to open and close the valve, while at the same time, in connection with the screw f it prevents the complete separation of the cap from the valve tube, thus avoiding any danger of loss of the cap. This construction provides a valuable improvement over those heretofore in common use. It has hitherto been common to form the groove d at the outer end of the tube and to form the screw-thread e inwardly thereof. It has been found that the would very often screw completely 0d the thread before its movement was stopped by the screw f. When manufactured in large quantities a very considerable percentage of the valves have been found to be defective in this particular. By locating the groove 01 inwardly of the screw-thread a this disadvantage is entirely obviated, since it is impossible for the cap to screw ofi the thread 0.
Our invention also includes important improvements in the valve proper E. According to our invention such valve proper is formed as a separate member from the valve cap so that it may be easily removed and replaced. Such va'lve proper is shown in section in Fig. 1 and in elevation in Fig. 2. Preferably the valve proper is formed of a solid piece of metal h recessed at its under side at 9' to receive the packing washer a, the
latter being held in place by a stud k, a shank of which is extended up through the lower part of the memberw, and its end riveted as shown. The member 7:. is provided with a slot Z into which the endof the stud It extends, which slot also forms a passage for the air. To facilitate the operation of rivetting the end of the stud k, the slot Z is enlarged at n (Fig. 3) to admit a riveting tool. The valve member I). is provided on its upper side with a'shoulder 0 which is deseat as the cap I) is screwed home.
The valve cap is provided at its upper end i with a passage 8 which is preferably screwthreaded as shown so as to permit the cap to be coupled with a pump or the like.
Various means. may be employed for detachably swiveling the valve proper to the cap, but we have shown in the drawings the construction which we prefer to employ. In thisconstruction the valve body It is formed with a circular groove t at its middle, which groove is designed to receive the end at of a screw '0 which .is threaded into the wall of the cap as shown. The screw '0- is of such dimensions that when it is screwed home it does not bind the valve proper but permits it to rotate relatively to the cap so that it'is in efiect ,swiveled thereto.
During inflation the air flows through the passage 8, thence through the slot 1 1n the valve body It and laterally out of such slot into the space between the valve body and the cap D and thence around the .under side of the valve proper into the valve tube B.
Our inventionpresents several advantages,
over valves ;now 1n use. The provisiofiof a valve proper which is detachably swiveled to the cap permits such valve proper to be easily inspected or repaired, and the packing a to e replaced. The cap is mtirely' prevented from working oil" the tube or from having its screw-thread disengaged from that of the tube. The interiorbore pf the cap may be screw-threaded. from end to end .Without counterboring any part thereof. This in itself rovides a considerable econpmy-in' manu acture. Moreover, the; percentage of defective valves much reduced.
We make no claim herein broadly to a produced is. very valve proper of the type shown herein having means for preventing lateral expansion of the washer, since this is described and claimed in our application, Serial No.
244,061, filed February 3, 1905.
While We have shown and described one form of our invention we do not wish to be limited thereto since various changes may be made therein without departing from the invention. It will also be understood that while we have shown our invention as applied to a pillow valve, it may be used in other types of valves.

In a pillow valve or the like, a valve proper, having a recess at its inner end, a slot leading from its top to a point near said recess, a packing in said recess, and a stud for holding said packing therein, said stud having its head below said pacln'ng and being riveted at the bottom of said slot. 2. In a pillow valve or the like, a valve cap, and a valve proper therein, said valve proper having a shoulder and a tubular ex end of sald outer portion and the oints ofengagement of said screw-threade portion and bore.
4-. In a pillow valve or the like, a valve tube, and a valve cap, said tube having a screw-threaded end, and inwardly of said end a groove, and said cap havlng a screwthreaded bore, and having means or engaging said groove to prevent complete separation of said tube and cap.
5. In a pillow valve or the llke, a valve tube, and a valvecap, said tube having a screw-threaded. end, and inwardly of saidend a groove, and said cap having a screwthreaded bore, and having a screw for eng'aging said groove to revent complete separation of said tube an cap. v
6. In a pillow valve or the like, the combination of a valve tube and cap, said tube having a screw-threaded end and said cap having ascrew-threaded bore, and said tube and cap, having inwardly of such end means for normally preventing removal of said cap from said tube, said means being adapted to permit limited rotary and longltudinal movements of said cap relatively to said tube, and a valve properopened and closed by such longitudinal movements.
