ELECTRIC ELEVATOR-DOOR-QPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Septemijer 9, 1914. Serial No. 860,923.
lre it known that I. CLYDE D. lrnvnnxcn, a citizen of the l'nited States. residing at Youngstown. in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful improvements in Electric Elevator- Door-Operating Devices. of which the tollowing: is a specification.
This invention is an improved elevator door operating! device for automatically o 'iening' and closing an elevator door when the elevator is .-'top )ed or started from a landing, the object of the invention being to provid an improved apparatus of this kind which greatly promotes safety by insuring the automatic operation of the elevator door when the elevator is started and stopped by the attendant and which moreover, prevents the elevator door from being opened or closed excepting when the floor ofthe elevator is level or practically level with one of the lloors ot' the building in which the elevator is used.
The invention c 1 nsists in the construction', combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is'a vertical, sectional view of an elevator provided with auton'iatic electrically operated mechanism to actuating the elevator door, the said figure being partly diagrammatic and (llSClOHlIlQ; the electric circuit. Fig. i! is a detail elevation of the contact box and ot the cam conductor which operates the san'ie' Fig. 3' is a detail elevation of the cam conductor at right angles to Fig. Fifi. i. is a detail end elevation of the latch and its nnections. l ig. 5 a detail side elevation ol' the latch and a sectional view ot its connections.
For the purposes ot this specification an elevator car indicated at l and the-shaft in which the car operates is indicated at 2. The shaft is provided at each landing with a sliding door 3 which is here shown as ha vingr hangers 4- at its upper side provided with rollers fmvhieh hear on a track rail U. The door is provideifl.with a'pivotally mount ed latch T which is for engaging a keeper 8 at the side of the door opening against which the d oor closes. A translating device 5) is employed for operating the latch and is here shown as a olenoid which is vertically arri'inged and core 10 of which is connected to the latch by a rod 11, so that when ductor the windings oi the solenoid are charged the '"eore is drawn upwardh and the latch raised Patent-ed Oct. 26, 1915;
its upper end tothe shat't as at 15, andbeine' also provided with a slot 16. This slot is engaged by a stud 1.7 which pro ects from ,the'connected cores of the solenoids 18l9 which are horizontall arranged and secured to the shaft At one side. of the car is a cam 20 which is v rtically arranged, is substantially se1nie \"lindrieal. and is provided on its curved ram surface with a pair of spaced conducting strips ll- 22 which are preferably made of copper. The car mntrollerlever 23 is provided with a cam .34. to-opcrate the movable element 25 ot a switch 26, saidswitch including an electrode 27 carried by the inovable OlQlllCLc and also including a pair of contacts 28 v29 which are respectively connected to the conducting strips 2122 of the cam 20. An electric conducting cable 30 is connected to the movable element of the switch as at 31 and is also connected to the junction box 32 in the elevator well. A conconnects the'co'ntact 28' with the conducting strip 21, a conductor 3 connectstrip A contact box 35 is arranged at each landing in the elevator, shaft, at a suitable height according to the height of the car and is provided with circuit closers SG BT. The circuit closer 36 comprises a conducting spring plate or bar 38 which is secured at one end as at 39 and provided at its free end with a contact which normally is disengaged from an electrode -l0 which is connected by a wire ll to the windings of thesolenoid 19, a wire 42 leading troin the windings of said solenoid to a conunon return wire for arrangement at one side of the elevator shaft. A spring 38 has a conducting contact plug all which is ar ringed to be engaged by the conducting strip 21 of the cam 20 when the car reaches the required position in the landing so that said plug is placed by the cam to close, the circuit between 38- l0. The eirzuit closer 37 is identical. in construction with the circuit closer 36 contact plug being. indicated at 4:5 and its electrodes at %6 l7, the latter being ing the contact strip 25.) with the conducting Y 7 connected by a wire 48 to the windingsof windings of the solenoid 18 to the windings ing the cam 24 of said lever to depress the the solenoid 18. A wire 49 leads from the of the solenoid 19, and a wire leads from the windings of the solenoid 9 to the wire 42 which is connected to the return wire 43.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the operator wishes to stop the car at any floor he will turn the controller lever 23 to a vertical position, thereby causelement 25 and close the electrode 27"against the electrode ofthe contact 29. Vhen the car reaches the required position with its floor substantially levelwith that of the floor of the building at which it is to stop the brass contact plugs of the contact box 35 will be depressed by the. strips on the cam 20'to close the contacts in the contact boX and hence current will pass from the conductor 30 through switch element 25, points 2729 conductor 34, cam strip 22, circuit closer 37, conductor 48, solenoid 18 conductor 49, solenoid 9, conductor 50 and 25 return conductor 43, thus causing the solenoids 18-9 to be energized with the result that solenoid .9 releases the latch 7 and the solenoid 18 by drawing in its core causes the latter through the stud 17- to move the lever bar 14 in the required direction to open the door. IVhen the caris started in either direction by moving the lever 23 in one direction or the other the cam 24 releases the element 25 and the latter springs upwardly so as to open circuit between 2729 and close acircuit between 2728 thus cutting out the solenoids 9.18 and cutting in the solenoid 19, the core of the latter hence causing the lever bar 14 to swing'in the'direction required to close the door.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the doors to the elevator shaft at the various landings are automatically closed as the car leaves a landing and automatically opened as it reaches a landing thus insuring.
door operating lever bar, solenoids arranged with a common core, the latter being connected to said lever bar, circuits including the windings of the solenoids and also. in
cluding circuit closers and each of said circuit closers having a push button, and a car carried team to actuate said push buttons and cause the same to close said circuit closers and a car carried lever and switch devices actuated by said lever and included in the clrcuits with the said door operating means and said circuit closers.
3. In apparatus of the class described elec- -trically actuated door opening and closing means, electrically operated latch operating means for the door, an electric circuit including the latch operated means and the door opening means, an electric circuit including the door closing means, circuit closers for said electric circuits, car carried means to close said circuit closers, switch devices for said circuits and means to actuate said switch devices.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
