To all whom, it may concern:
RING and EDGAR D. Porn, citizens of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Jay, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful SPOLIGrIt IltGPTHg Machine, of which the following isa specification.
The deviceforming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for mitering spokes.
One object of the present invention is to provide novel means whereby the knife carrying frames may be shifted withrespect to each other thus to alter the amount of bevel at the hub engaged end of the spoke.
Another object of the invention isto provide means whereby the spoke carrying table may be shifted vertically thus to provide for a proper beveling of spokes which are to constitute a part of a dished wheel.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for reciprocating the cutting knives.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to whlch the present invention appertains.
V1 ith the above and other objects in view which will. appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings i-Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation, one of the side plates of the supporting frame being removed; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the view point in Fig. 2 being 90 degrees remote from the view point in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and portions of the gear train being omitted; Fig. 3 is atop plan of the spoke table; .Fig. 4 is a fragmental side elevation of the spoke table; Fig. 5 is a top plan of the cross head; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the cross head; Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the cross head; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of one of the knife frames; Fig. 9 is a side elevation showing a portion of one of the connecting bolts, whereby the knife frames are movably assembled with the cross head; Fig. 10 is a fragmental vertical section showing one of the adjustable gibs; Fig. 11 is a top plan of the knife frame shown in Fig. 8; Fig. 12 is a top plan of the spoke grip.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a frame of any desired form, the same in the present instance including a box-like support 1, one side of which is closed by a removable plate 2, the plate being detached in Fig. 1.
Mounted upon the frame is a stub shaft 8 carrying a belt wheel 4 or the like and a pinion 5. The pinion 5 meshes into a gear wheel 6 on a frame supported shaft 7. Splined to the shaft 7t0 slide longitudinally thereon is a sleeve 8, to one end of which is secured a, gear wheel 9, a gear wheel 10 being secured to the other end of the sleeve.
Thesleeve is moved longitudinally through the instrumentality of a shifting lever 11, operatively connected with the sleeve 8 as shown at 12 in Fig. 2. The gear wheel 9 is adapted to mesh into a pinion 1 1 fixed to a frame supported shaft 15. Journaled for rotation on the shaft 15 is a pinion l6 adapted at times to mesh into the gear wheel 10. The pinion 1G is adapted to be connected operatively with. the shaft 15 through the instrumentality of a clutch 17 controlled by a shifting rod 18which may be mounted to slide in a bearing 18 on the machine frame. The pinion 16 meshes into a relatively large gear wheel 19 fixed to a shaft 20 journaled in a bearing 21 onthe machine frame.
In operation, when the wheel 1 is rotated, motion will be transmitted to the shaft 7 through the instrumentality of the pinion 5 and the gear wheel 6. If the pinion 14 is in mesh with the gear wheel 9 as shown in Fig. 2, then motion will be transmitted to the shaft 15 and from the shaft 15 by way of the pinion l6 and the gear wheel 19 to with the shaft 15 through the medium of the shifting rod 18, it being obvious that at either speed, the machine may be stopped by manipulating the rod18 and uncoupling the pinion 16 from the shaft 15.
The foregoing description embodies but one of many devices which may be employed for altering the speed of rotation of the wheel 19 and the showing of the drawings in this regard is typical only.

It will now be understood that when the gear wheel 19 is rotated, a vertical reciprocating movement will be imparted to the cross head 23 through the instrumentality of the pitman 55, the speed of reciprocation of the cross head 23 vertically being capable of alteration by means of the change speed gearing hereinbefore' set forth.
Noting Fig. 5 wherein the cross head is shown in top'plan, it will be observed that at one end of the cross head are located lugs '27 which, as shown in Fig. 6 are provided with T-shaped slots 28. In the other end of the cross head 23 are threaded openings 29.
A pair of knife-carrying frames are provided, each frame comprising a pair of posts 30, a web 31 connecting the posts, and a top plate 32 connecting the posts. Secured 1n any, desired manner to the webs 31 of the knife frames areknives 33. Tapered bolts 34 and 34 extend upwardly through the vposts 30 of the knife frames. The bolt-s 34 a at their lower ends enter'the openings 29 in the cross head and form bearings upon which the knife carrying frames are mounted to swing horizontally toward and away from'each other. The bolts 34 are equipped at their lower ends with'transverse heads 34 which are adjustable. in the T-shaped slots 28 of the lugs 27 of the cross head. A link 35 of a fixed length connects the upper ends of the bolts 34, the upper ends of the bolts '34? united by an adjustable connection which may be in the form of a turnbuckle 36, comprising a sleeve and eye bolts, the eye bolts being engaged around the ends of the bolts 34*. Nuts 37 are threaded onto the upper ends of the bolts 34 and 34 The nuts 37 onthe bolts 34 bear upon the l1nk 35,
and the nuts on the bolts 34 bear against the ends of the eye bolts which constitute a part of the turnbuckle 36. It will now be understood that by loosening the nuts 37 on the bolts 34, the heads 34 of the bolts 34 may be permitted to move in the T-shaped slots 28, for adjustment, thus varying the angle between the knives 33 and regulating the bevel imparted to the end of the spoke. The function of the turnbuckle 3G or its equivalent is to adjust the movable ends of the knife carrying frames toward and away from each other to regulate the bevel as hereinbefore set forth. In one end of the cross head 23 there is an opening 38 which serves to receive one end of a spoke supporting table (hereinafter described) when the cross head is reciprocatcd vertically.
Formed upon one side of the support 1 or attached thereto is a box-like casing 39 in which is mounted a shaft 40, constituting a fulcrum for the intermediate portion of a table 41, one end of the table 41 protruding laterally, as shown in Fig. 1, and the other end of the table entering between the knives 33. The table 41 includes a depending arm 42 entering the casing 39. The movement of the arm 42 with the shaft 40 as a fulcrum is controlled by means of a screw 43 threaded into the casing39. Projecting from the arm 42 is a threaded stud 44 passing outwardly through the casing 39 and mounted upon the stud 44 is a lock nut 44 adaptedto bind against the outer face of the easing 39.
By means of the construction last above described, the position of the spoke support-.
ing table 41 with respect to the horizontal may be altered thus to secure a proper beveling of a spoke which is to be used upon a dished wheel.
Adjacent its inner end and in its upper face, the table 41 is equipped with a recess 45. A screw 46 is mounted to rotate in the table 41 but is held against longitudinal movement therein, the screw being rotatable through the medium of a band wheel 47. In the upper face of the table 41 and at its inner end is fashioned a groove 48 in which is mounted to reciprocate a slide 49 held in place by a cover plate 50 united with the table 41 through the medium of securing elements 51. At one end, the slide 49 is equipped with a stop finger 52 which serves to position the inner end of the spoke properly, the finger 52 being mounted to reciprocate in a slot 53 in the cover plate 50. The slide 49 is provided with a depending lug 54 into which one end of the screw 46 is threaded. By manipulating the screw 46 through the medium of the hand wheel 47 the position of the stop finger 52 may be adjusted, thereby to position the end of the spoke properly to be operated upon by the knives 33.
Secured to the table 41 is a spoke grip which ordinarily is constructed as follows, although the specific form of spoke grip shown may be departed from, without jeopardizing the utility of the invention.
The spoke grip embodies a base plate 101 superposed upon the table 41 and held thereto by set screws 102. The base plate 101 includes a transverse head 103 having lugs 104 at its ends. In the lugs 104 is ournaled a screw 105 equipped at one end with an operating handle 111. Dovetailed for sliding movement on the transverse head 103 are carriages 106 which may be in the form of blocks. The screw 105 is right hand threaded into one carriage and is left hand threaded intothe other. Mounted upon the upper faces of the blocks or carriages 106 are spoke holding jaws 107, pivoted to the blocks or carriages as shown at 108. Upstanding from the blocks or carriages 106 are studs 109 which are adapted to move in elongated slots 110 formed in the jaws 107, the detail last above mentioned permitting the jaws to co liperate properly with a spoke, regardless of the taper of the spoke. By rotating the screw 105, the jaws 107 may be moved toward and away from each other, and by adjusting the set screws 102, the base plate 101 and attendant parts may be adjusted longitudinally of the table 41.
At its upper end, the vertically reciproeating cross head 23 is provided upon opposite sides with downwardly slanting chip chutes 57 adapted to discharge, within the contour of the support 1, upon chip chutes 58 mounted at the lower edges of openings 59 in the support and discharging outside of the support.
The operation of the structure has been dealt with hereinbefore step-by-step, but briefly considered is as follows: The position of the spoke with respect to a horizontal plane may be adjusted by changing the position of the table 11 through the instrumentality of the screw 43. The angle defined by the knives 33 with respect to each other, and consequently the bevel, may be altered, by shifting the lower ends of the bolts 34? in the slots 28 of the cross head 23. lVhen the cross head 23 is reci'procated through the medium of the pitman and the gear wheel 19, the knives 33 as they descend will cut the desired bevel on the spoke, the chips being conducted away by means of the chip chutes 57 and 58. A change in speed may be effected by such a mechanism as that shown in the lower portion of Fig. 2. The position of the end of the spoke which is to be beveled may be regulated by altering the position of the stop finger 52 through the medium of the screw 46.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is I 1. In a device of the class described, a frame; a table pivoted to the frame and provided with a depending arm; an adjustable connection between the arm and the frame whereby the table may be tilted vertically; a pair of carriages mounted to move with respect to the table transversely thereof; means for moving the carriages toward and away from each other; cooperating jaws pivoted to the carriages for limited automatic adjustment parallel to the plane of the table; a pair of cutters coiiperating with the jaws; and frame supported means for actuating the cutters.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame; a cross head mounted to reciprocate on the frame; a pair of knife holders pivoted to the cross head and having bearings; uprights longitudinally adjustable in the bearings, the uprights having ends which engage the cross head slidably to permit the holders to be swung toward and away from each other, and engage the cross head in clamping relation when the uprights are moved longitudinally; a longitudinally adjustable connection uniting the uprights; and clamping devices on the uprights, the clamping devices constituting at once a means for retaining the connection and a means for moving the uprights longitudinally to cause the ends thereof to bind on the cross head.
3. In a device of the class described, a frame; a table mounted to move upon the frame; means for holding the table in adjusted positions; a work supporting base plate on the table; an end stop mounted to move on the table independently of the base plate; means for holding the stop in adjusted positions; carriages mounted to move on the base plate transversely of the base plate; pivotally supported automatically adjustable jaws mounted on the carriages; means for moving the carriages toward and away from each other; cutters upheld by the frame and mounted to move adjacent the jaws; and means for operating the cutters.
