To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN HALCIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pisek, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gear Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gear mechanism.
The main object of the present invention is to provide operating means for a churn in which the power mechanism includes meshing gearing and sprocket chains that are associated with a rocking chair whereby the reciprocating dashers of a multiple churn are operated during rocking movement of the chair.
ith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device operatively connected to a rocking chair, but with the churn shown in'vertical central section. Fig.2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion'of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that a cylindrical churn 10 is provided having a diametrically arranged central partition 11 which divides the churn into two equal compartments or chambers 12 each of which is substantially semi-circular in cross-section and each being pro-" vided with a semi-circular disk form of dasher 13. The said dashers are provided with perforations 4, while the partition 11 has perforations 15 therethrough. A cover or lid 16 is provided for the churn being removably secured thereon by hold-fast devices 17. The dashers 13 are in the form of pistons and are provided with dasher rods 18 for operating the same, which rods are centrally pivoted as at 19 to the upper faces of the dashers and are passed through elongated slots 20 in the churn cover 16.
A frame 21 is provided with guideways 22 upon the upper side thereof and within these ways, the curved rockers 23 of the rocking chair 2st are operatively positioned, the said chair and its rockers being of substantially the usual form.
A mounting base board 25 is carried by the frame 21 and the churn 10 is secured thereto by means of brackets 26, thus rigidly positioning the churn at one side of the chair 2st, the latter being retained upon the frame 21 and within the guideways 22 by means of helical compression springs 27 con nected between the chair legs 28 and the said frame, which springs also normally position the chair with the legs thereof vertical when the same is not in use.
Two gears 29 are arranged in spaced relations outwardly of the side rail 30 of the chair, being journaled upon stub shafts 31' carried by the said rail. The said gears 29 are identically formed, each being provided with a toothed face 32 of relatively large diameter and a toothed face 33 of smaller diameter and positioned outwardly thereof. Pinions 34 are journaled upon stub shafts 35 carried by depending arms 36 secured to the rail 30 and the said pinions 3-1- are in constant meshing engagement with the smaller gear faces 83.
A crank 37 is carried by each of the pinions 34 and adjacent the toothed periphery thereof and extends to a point above one of the dasher cover slots 20. The upper ends of the dasher rods 18 are pivoted to the said cranks 37 and it will thus be apparent that a turning of the pinions 34: results in the actuation of the dashers 13 through the agency of the said pivotal connecting rods 18.
A sprocket chain 38 passes over the larger toothed gear faces 32 and has one end thereof pivotally attached to a corner lug 39 of the base board 25, while the other end of the sprocket chain is resiliently connected by means of a compression spring 40 with a similar. oppositely positioned corner lug 41 of the said base board.
The usual oscillations of the chair 2 1 effected by the occupant thereof in rocking alternately forwardly and rearwardly correspondingly moves the stub shafts 31 and 35 and the sprocket chain 38 operates after the manner of a rack with respect to the larger, toothed gear faces 32 which are in constant mesh therewith and whereby the gears 29 are revolved uniformly in opposite directions during the opposite oscillations of the chair.
The spring 40 operates as an automatic takeup for any slack in the sprocket chain 38 and thus the latter is constantly retained in operative engagement with the gears 29. Any turning of the gears 29 will result in revolving the pinions 34 in an opposite direction, while the actuation of the said pinions reciprocates the dasher rods 18 by means of the pinion cranks 37 and the dashers 13 are consequently reciprocated during the rocking movement of the chair. The opposite oscillations of the chair propel the pinions 3 1 in opposite directions, but the dasher rod cranks 37 being arranged at diametrically opposite points upon the two pinions 34, one of the dashers 13 will be positioned at the extreme upward limit of its movement, while the other dasher is at the extreme lower limit of its movement as shown by Fig. 1 so that the reciprocations of the two dashers will be alternate with respect to each other regardless of the direction, in which the pinions 34 are revolving in unison.
The partition perforations 15 allows the contents of the churn in each of the chambers 12 to communicate with substantially the same effect as the provision of a single containing chamber. The churn cover 16 may be readily removed and the dashers taken out of the churn by releasing the holddasher rods 18 from the cranks 37 by removing the cotter pins 12.
Vhile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. Driving mechanism including a base board, a spring-tensioned sprocket chain carried thereby, amovable member mounted on said board, meshing gearing mounted on the movable member in mesh with the sprocket chain, and rods connected to said gearing and reciproeated thereby.
2. Driving mechanism including a base board, a sprocket chain carried thereby, a spring connecting one of the chain ends to the base board, meshing gearing operated by said chain, rods connected to said gearing and reciprocated thereby, and means for bodily moving the gearing whereby the rods are reciprocated.
3. Driving mechanism including a base support, a member movable relative thereto, gearing carried by said member, a chain fixed at its ends to said support in mesh with the gearing, and rods connected to said gearing adapted to be reciprocated when the movable member is operated.
