Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed'December 11, 1914. Serial No. 876,735.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,- JAMES L. CANTLON and DANIAL HURLEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at I-Iillyard, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to locomotives and has for its object to provide a removable hub-liner to take the place of babbitt commonly run onto the face of the driver boxes to serve as a bearing between the driver boxes and the wheels of the locomotive.
Under the method of using the babbitt as above mentioned itis necessary to remove the driver boxes in order to re-line them by running them with babbitt. The weight of the engine is upon the driver boxes and this makes it necessary to remove the weight of the engine in order to get at and disconnect the driver boxes. Under our improved construction metal plates are attached to the driver boxes in such a manner that they may be driven out when worn and replaced by new ones without the necessity of disturbing the assembled condition of the locomotive or the position of the driver boxes.
The detail construction and arrangement of parts will be hereinafter particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is a broken away side elevation of a locomotive showing the improved con struction, Fig. 2, is a sectional View taken on the line 2.2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, isa sectional view of the axle and a front view of the driver box with the improved plate attached thereto, Fig. 4:, is a plan view of a driver box with the improved plate attached thereto, Fig. 5, is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3, Fig. 6, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 3, Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 8, is a broken-away front view of a driver box as prepared for the attachment of the improved plate. 7
In a detail description of the parts, the
driver boxes 10 engage the axles 11 near the wheels 12. The hub-liner plates 13 are attached to the vertical walls of the driver boxes 10 adjacent to the hubs 14: of the wheels 12. The manner in which we prefer to attach the hub-liner plates 13 to the driver boxes 10 is by dove-tailing them together as shown in Fig. 6, the vertical face of the driver boxes 10 being hollowed out as at 15 (Fig. 8) and the plates being provided with corresponding projections 16 adapted to engage and to fit the hollowed out portions 15. The plates 13 are held rigid in their position on the driver boxes 1.0 by means of set screws 17 turned into threaded bores 18 in the upper portions of the boxes 10. The heads 19 of the screws 17 extend over the tops 13 of the plates 13 and are countersunk as at 18 into the top of the boxes 10. Extending downwardly from and connected with the hollowed out portions 15 of the driver boxes 10 (Fig. 8) are openings 20 through which an instrument may be inserted to reach the plates 13 to drive them upwardly when it is desired to remove the plates 13. In order to remove the plates 13 it is only necessary to turn out the set screws 17 and then drive the plates 13 upwardly as stated above.
As shown in Fig. 1 it will be seen that as locomotives are constructed, the equalizing beams 21 and engine frames 22 are so intimately connected with the driver boxes 10, that as the driver boxes 10 are now lined, it is necessary to disassemble the locomotive to re-line, but under our improved construction the set screws 17 are removed and the plates 13 driven out upwardly along the side of the equalizing beams 21, and new plates 13 inserted downwardly in their stead, occasioning no removing of any other part of the locomotive. These hub-liners may be used on trailers and engine truck boxes.
What is claimed is,
1. In a locomotive, a removable hub-liner construction comprising a driver-box, a vertical wall on the driver box next to the hub of the locomotive, vertical grooves in said wall, a plate adapted to engage the axle of the locomotive and the said wall of the driver-box, tongues on said plate adapted to engage the grooves in said wall, means for holding said plate rigidly in relation to said driver-box wall, such means comprising set screws counter-sunk in a vertical position in the top wall of the driver-box with their heads overlapping said plate, and means whereby said plate may be removed from said wall.
2. In a locomotive, a removable hub-liner construction comprising a driver-box, grooves in the wall of the same, a plate having tongues adapted to engage the grooves in the wall of said driver-box, means for holding said plate in rigid relation with said driver-box, such means comprising set screws countersunk in a vertical position in the-top wall of the driver-box with their heads overlapping said' plate, and means whereby said plate may be driven loose from its connection with said driver-box, such means comprising openings in the lower portion of the vertical wall of the driverbox extending ,u pwardly to the lower end Copies of this patent may be obtained for of said plate whereby an instrument may be inserted to force said plate upwardly out of said grooves after said set screws have been 15 removed.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
