.7 '0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM AUoUs'rUs TYLER, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Daisy, in the county of Stevens and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erten'slon Step-Ladders, of which the follow ng 1s a Y specification, reference being had therein to e accompanying drawing. I
This invention relates to ladders and has for its object the production of a ladder that will firmly stand on a hillside or on roughened or irregular ground.
Another. object of this invention is th production of a novel means of securmg the adjustable legs upon the primary legs of the ladder.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an improved locking means to be used with this device. With these and other objects 1n view this invention consists of certainnovel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawmg: Flgure' 1 is a perspective view of the ladder in a setup position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ladder in a set-up position with one leg in an adjusted position". Fig. 3 is a'section taken through one of the primary legs showing the locking strip in a locked position. Fig- 4 is a section taken through one of the primary legs with the locking bolt m a dis engaged position. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken through the top of the ladder. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 66 of Flg.
2. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of oneof the guiding plates used with this device.
Referring. to the parts by reference numerals this ladder consists of the prlmary legs 10 having the ordinary graduating steps 11 secured between the same, and having secured at their upper ends the U-shaped strap members 13 which are secured to the primary legs 10 by means of the bolts 12.-
An ordinary bracing leg 14 provided with flared upper members 15 is pivotally mounted in the outer end of the ll-shapedv strap members 12. Mounted upon the top of these strap members 13 is a shelf 16.
Secured to the inner face of the primary legs 10 are springiocking strips 17 that pass through the cut out portion 18 of one of the steps and each has at its lower end the locknecessary is to y from the alined openings,
ing boltb tti on which is mounted the operatmg kno 20. This locking bolt 19 is adapted to pass through the opening 21 in the priof the primary leg so as to allow t e bo t 19' to pass through the alined openings to hold the adjustable leg in the desired position. It will be seen from the foregoing descript1on that when it is desired to use this device on rough or unlevel ground all that is pull the operating knob20 which w1ll in turn withdraw the-bolt 19 leg 22 can be moved to the desired position, and the bolt- 19 will by means of the spring 17 pass itself in the alined openings of the ad ustable position.
It is obvious that minor changes may he made in'the form and construction of this invention without de arting from the spirit thereof. It is theref fine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What isclaimed, is: x A ladder comprising a pair of primary legs resilient strips on the inner faces of said legs having bolts at the lower ends thereof, steps between said legs one of said steps adjacent said strips provided with a cut out portion, to limit the outward movement of said strips and to prevent the lateral swing of said strips should the same be enand the adjustable ore not wished to conwith said openings in said primary legs to lock said adjustable legs in a desired position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
