Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 115,?62, dated June 6, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern: l
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. MEGVAW, of Wilmington, in the county ofA N ew Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view with the shutters open4 and lower sash raised. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the line x a'.
This invention has relation to fasteners for window-shutters and window-sashes; and it consists in the device herein described, so constructed as to answer for both purposes, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Referringl to the accompanying drawing, A represents the frame, B the shutters, and C the sash, of a window constructed in the ordinary manner. D is an arm made in the general form shown, having an eye, e, at one end to connect with the staple in the shutter, and a catch or button, e', pivoted on the other end to turn into a mortise on the inside of the lower sash to hold it down when the shutters are closed; it is also provided with a pin, e2, to be inserted in holes in the plate F F so as to hold the shutters open in a bowed position or entirely closed, as desired. The plate Fis placed on the frame A and under vthe sash'G, which is slotted to receive it; and on its inner end, on the inside of the sash, it has a hole for the pin e2 when the shutters are entirely closed; and on its outerend it has several holes for the pin, that the shutters may be held in a more or less bowed position. This plate may be made in any suitable shape. The plate F is fastened to the 'frame or sill, and has an ear, with a hole for the pin, when the shutters are to held entirely open. On the inside of the sash C is a mortise, g, into which the catch e1 may be turned to hold the sash down, and which it will do, though the arm and shutter should be wrenched apart.
This contrivance presents a combined fastener for blinds and sash for windows that is eiectual, convenient, and inexpensive, and that will hold the shutters in a bowed position, the arm being locked iirmly'by the sash.
I claim as my invention* The catch or button el, or its equivalent, at-
tached to the arm D, and adapted for locking into the recess of a window-sash, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
