To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, WILLIAM J. KING- CADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeman, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Viretretching Appliances; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art te which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in stretching devices and more particularly to that class employed for stretching wires in fence building, and my object is to provide a device of this class which may be quickly applied to use and which is efficient in its operation.

The `further object is to so construct a device that it can be readily disassembled for transportation or for storage purposes.

1n the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to use for stretching the wires of a fence. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View showing the position of the operating lever when one of the hooks thereof is engaged with the chain, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the lever when drawn to its opposite position.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates my approved form of stretching bar which comprises a body portion 2, having at one end thereof a socket 3, while the opposite end is bifurcated. to form arms l and 5. These arms are preferably disposed at an angle to the line of trend of the body portion and each arm has at its free end a prong 6, which prongs are designed to engage a post 7, and by properly embedding the prongs in the post, the stretching bar will be held against lateral or vertical movement. After the prongs have been properly engaged with the post, an anchoring bar 8 is introduced through the socket 3 and driven a suitabledistance into the ground to prevent the same 'from becoming loosened during the stretching operation, and if preferred, a locking bolt 9 may be entered through the wall of the socket 3 to clamp the socket on the bar, and said socket Specification of Letters Patent.

may also have laterally extending anchoring chains 8.

llfhe portion of the body carrying the arms 4 and 5 is provided with the longitudinal bore 10 through which is introduced a shaft 11, one end of the shaft communicating with the slot 12 in the body portion, and on said end is 'placed a washer 13, which washer is held in position in any suitable manner as by means of a cotter pin or the like 14, the-washer and cotter pin securely holding the shaft in engagement with the stretching bar. The opposite end 15 of the shaft 11 is pivotally secured in the slotted enol 16 of a power applying lever 17 which lever normally rests in horizontal position and eX tends transversely ofthe stretching bar. Also pivotally secured in the slotted end 16, and on opposite sides of the pivot point of the shaft 11, are hooks 18 and 19, which hooks are adapted to alternately engage the links of the chain 20, said chain having a hook terminal 21 at its end to engage a clamp 22, which clamp in turn is attached to the wires 23 of the fence construction.

ln operation, the stretching bar is attached to the post 7 and anchoring bar 8, as shown in Fig. 1, when the lever 17 is swung its full distance in one direction, as shown in F ig. 2, the hook 18 engaging the chain 20, when by moving the lever 17 to the position shown in F ig. 3, the wires will be stretched that distance and the hook 19 brought into position to engage one of the links of the chain. After the hook 19 is engaged 'ith the chain, the lever is again swung in the Vopposite direction until the hook 18 is moved forwardly and in position to engage another' link of the chain, and by repeatedly operating the lever in this manner the wires will be properly stretched and then secured in position on the post.

llVhen the stretching device is being transported from place to place or when being stored away, the cotter pin 14C may be removed and the shaft 11 disengaged from the stretching bar so that the lever can be placed parallel with the body portion and will consume but a small amount of space.

-t will further be seen that in view of the simplicity of the device, it can be very cheaply constructed and at the same time rendered extremely strong and durable, and likewise it may be seen that it cai be quickly assembled and applied in operative position.

What l claim is In a stretching device, the combination with a body having a longitudinally eX-v tending bore and a transverse slot communieating with one end of the bore, a socket at one end of the body, arms at the opposite end of the body, prongs at the free ends of said arms, of a shaft extending through the bore of the body, means to removably secure the shaft in said bore, a lever having a slotted end to pivotally receive said shaft, a hook member at each side of the pivoted end of the shaft and pivotally connected in said slotted end, a chain cooperating with said hook to engage and cause Wires to stretch when the lever is operated, and an 15 anchoring means cooperating with said socket to hold the body against swinging movement.
