CARlBURETER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 1%, ilttftfii Application filed October 9, 1914. Serial No. 865,881.
To aZZ w/iom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCYWVILLIAM Hos- KISSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Poole, in the county of Dorset, England, have invented certain new and use'l'ul In'iproveinents in Spray-Carbureters for Use on Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spray carburcters for use on internal combustion engines and has for object to provide a simple type oi carburetor having a spring-loaded valve controlling the passage nozzle.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing a carburetor constructed in according with this invention, the float chamber being omitted. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of l the left. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve and Fig. 4 is a part sectional view of a modification.
liike letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
In this constructio-nthe spraying chamber A is roughly tubular and is horizontally arranged, although it may of course be vertical. At one end of the spraying chamber is provided an attachment B to enable it to be coupled to the inlet pipe, while the other About midway in the length olthe spraying chamber a fuel nozzle 1) is arranged, this being screwed into the top of a vertical tube 1) which is in communication with a float feed mechanism of the ordi-v nary type (not shown) nozzle projects only slightly above the bottom of the spraying chan'iber, as shown.
The air inlet F is in the side of the spraying chamber A so that, as shown by the arrow in Fig. 1, the air inlet is at right angles to the axis oi. the spraying chamber. This air inlet F is provided with a disk valve G which is pressed downward by a spring G and is adapted to slide on a rod (l while the guide rod (l prevents its -rotation. in the construction shown in Fig. 4 the valve (l is pivoted at G and the leaf springll presses'upon it.
i. shaped spring l-l presses of air over the jet against an ad- Preferably the i'uel ()ne end of this justable set screw H by the movement of which the pressure on the hinged valve can be varied. In the construction shown in Fig. l the spring (3 abuts against a screwed stem (i by the adjustment of which the pressure on the valve can be varied The valve rests upon a butler spring 6*".
In the valve is formed a channel l w extends from the hinge to that side oi disk adjacent to the fuel nozzle, and in section it may be 01'' the shape of the fuel nozzle, see Fig. 2, the idea being to concentrate the air, at low engine speeds, as close to the nozzle as possible.
The outlet from the nozzle may be adjustable by means of a dipping needle K. irct erably theneedle terminates in a ball L at the upper end which engages a housing suspended from an operating Wire or rod M. 'lhusthe needle is perfectly tree and cannot bind or wear in the fuel nozzle. 0n the outlet side of the fuel nozzle is the throttle slide N, which may be rectangular or circular.
It will be seen that by this invention very simple i'orm of carburetcr is provided in which, at slow speeds, all the air is concentrated near the jet nozzle so that etiicient slow running and acceleration can be obtained accompanied by economy of fuel and simplicity of operation.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination, a spraying chamber, a jet nozzle projecting through one wall of the horizontal plane of the spraying chain ber, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ottwo subscribing Witnesses.
PERCY WILLIAM HUSKISSON.
