HORSE-COLLAR.

My invention is an improvement in horse collars and the invention has for its object to provide a collar of the character specified, capable of adjustment to fit necks of different size, and wherein the collar is composed of a rigid frame, having a cushion engaging surface and provided with an 'inflatable inner lining, and permitting to dispense with the use of hames.

The present embodiment of the invention is composed of three sections, a top or neck section and two similar side sections. The top section is rabbeted, as shown, and is composed of a shell 1 of rigid material, as for instance metal, the said shell being open on its inner side, and a casing 2 of leather or the like is arranged within the shell, the said casing being circular in cross section and tubular, as shown. I

The section 12 is arched to fit the top of the horses neck, and a strap 3 is secured to the front thereof, by means of rivets 4 or the like, intermediate the ends of the strap, and the strap is curved to fit the curve of the neck-piece, the ends of the strap being left free.

The side sections are similar, each consisting of a rigid shell 5, of metal or the like, open at its inner side, and a casing 6 of flexible material, as for instance leather or the like is arranged within the shell, the casing being approximately cylindrical in cross section, and hollow, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.

front edge of each of the shells 5 is extended and bent upon itself to form a cylindrical extension 7 at the front of the section, the said extension extending from the upper end of each of the sections 5-6 to the lower inner end thereof.

' It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 1, that the lower end of each of the sections 56 is bent inwardly at approximately a right angle to the body portion of the section, and these angular portions are adapted to extend beneath the horses neck and to be connected to hold the collar in place on the horse.

The cylindrical extensions 7 are open at their upper ends to form sockets which are designed to receive cylindrical pins 8 on the upper section 1-2. Each of these pins is hollow as shown, and of cylindrical form, and each pin has a lateral extension 9 at its upper end which laps upon the outer face of the shell 1 of the upper section at the front of the collar, and is secured thereto by rivets 10 or the like. The pins 8 are so arranged with respect to the section 1, that each pin will extend beyond the end of the section, a little more than half the length of the pin, as shown in Fig. 1. The pins are as before stated, at the front and at the inner side of the section, the pins being at the front inner edge of the shell 1. These pins, as before stated, are intended to engage within the upper ends of the extensions 7, and set screws 11 are threaded through bosses 12 on the extensions at the upper end thereof, to engage the adjacent pin, to prevent disengagement thereof, and to hold the pin in adjusted position with respect to the socket.

A buckle 13 is secured toeach of the sections 5-'6 just below the set screws 11, and at the front of the section. Each buckle 13 is connected to the shell 1 by a tab 14 of leather or the like, which is riveted to the shell, and the buckles are adapted to be engaged by the free ends of the strap 3, and the said ends have openings as shown for connection with thebuckle.

A lining or inner tube 19 is arranged within the casings 2 and 6, the said inner tube as shown in Fig. 1, being of a size to extend through one'side section, through the neck section, and through the other side section to near the free end of theangularportion. Thetubeis shaped to fit and fill the casings -2 and 6,'and atone end thetube is provided with avalve 20 of the usual constriictiomfor permitting this tube to be filled with fluid In use, the inner tube 19 is filled with co1n pressed air, thus expanding the casings 2 and 6, and holding the casings wellextended beyond the shells l and 5 at the inner" sides of the section. In order to adjust the collar to the horses neck, the set'screws 11 may be loosened to permit the side sections to move downwardly with respect to the neck section, until the angular portions at the lower .ends of the side sections will fit smoothly under the neckof the horse. The bolt 15 is then turned to draw the side sec- .tions toward each other, until the collar fits smoothly on. the horses neck. The extensions 7, the pins 8 and the metallic shells 1 and 5 stiffen and reinforce the collar, so that no hames are needed. In addition, the soft cushions formed by the casings 2 and 6 prevent any chafing or injury to the horses v neck.

l/Vhenever the inner tube becomes lax it may be inflated. The strap and the buckles l3 assist in holding the sections in proper position with respect to each other, and in addition they prevent entire displacement of the sections 5 during adjustment of the pins 8 in the extensions 7.

A collar of the character specified, com- 7 extending beyond the shell at the inner side of the said edge and open at the top, a pin thereof, an inner tube or lining of elastic material having a valve at one end and shaped to fit within the three sections from the free inner end of the angular portion of one side section through the other side section to the free end of the angular portion, the valve extending beyond the adjacent section to permit the tube to be inflated, the shell of each side section having at one edge an integral bead extending the full length rigid with each end of the neck section and engaging the upper end of the bead of the adjacent side sections, set screws threaded through the bead into engagement with the pin, and adjustable connections between each and a tubular casing of side section and the neck section for holding the said sections during adjustment.

4:. A collar of the character specified, comprising a neck section and side sections, the

neck section being arched to fit theneck, andthe side sections having angular portions at their lower ends to extend beneath the neck, each section consisting of a metal shell open at the inner side, and a tubular casing of flexible material fitting within the shell and extending beyond the shell at the inner side thereof, an inner tube or lining of elastic material having a valve at one end and shaped to fit within the three sections from the'free inner end of the angular portion of one side section through the other side section to the free end of the angular portion, the valve extending beyond the adjacent section to permit the tube to be inflated, the shell of each side section having at one edge an integral bead extending the full length of the said edge and open at the top, a pin rigid with each end of the neck section and engaging the upper end of the bead of the adjacent side sections, and set screws threaded through the bead into engagement with the pin.

5. A collar of the character specified, comprising an arched neck section and side sections, each side section having an angular portion at its lower end, and each section consisting of a rigid shell open at its inner side, and a casing of flexible material filling the shell and extending beyond the shell at the open side, an inflatable inner tube filling the casings of, the three sections, and a slidable connection between the neck section and the side sections.
