Specification of Letters' Patent.- ,Patented Oct, V19,A 1915,
Application led J une 12, 1915. Serial No. 33,685.
l TA all whom it may concern.' l
Be it' known that we, MosEs MosLEn, a.
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, and CARL BARTELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamiltomitler cuntyl Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Safes, of which the fol@V vlowing is a'specification.
This invention, pertaining to improve* ments in safes, will be readily understood from the following description taken'in connection with the accompanying drawings in Figure lis a front elevation vof a safe ex.- emplifying our invention: Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same, in the plane of j line a of Fig. .1.: and Fig.l3 a horizontal section through a joint between shell-sections, in the plane of line a of Fig. 1.
In the drawings :-1indicates ahburglaryproof inner safe, illustrated as being circular 1n. vertical cross-section and con-- structed, preferably, of unmachinable metal, as cast manganese steel: 2, a circular door jamb therein to receive a round door, this jamb being illustrated as having a threaded rear portion and a front portion formed ,the rear and intermediate sections of the shell: 9, a' jainb-ring disposed around the,
doorway of the inner safe and projecting rigidly therefrom and having its front rigidly secured to the inner portion of the front section of the shell, Athis Vjarnb-ring having an -outwardly flaring tapering ciri cular jamb-opening: 10, a circularjamb formed in rig 9: 11, a rounddoor having a rear portion Jthreaded to iitthe rear por-A tion of the jamb of the inner safe and having a front portion fitting amb-ring 9 and having an'intermediate portionfitting' the forward portion ofthe jamb of the inner' safe:12, thebearing and gear-casing dis posed in front ofthe door and engaging a- ..55 v`'central journal on the door as is -co i* un in round door safes: 13, the usual crane-hinge having its heel pivotedl to the general safebody at one side of the door-opening, and
having its free portion pivoted tothe gearcasing 12, as is common in round door safes: 14, the dial of the u sual combination lockf:` 15, the spindle mountedin the gear-casing, to bel employed in rotating theb door, as usual: 16, a wheeled pedestal of lnot unusual form for supporting the general safe construction: 17, ireproof filling disposed Within the shell and around the inner safe vand the jamb-ring 9: 18, the hinge-lugs for the crane-hinge, these lugs being formed with thev jamb-ring and projecting out through suitable openings in the front section of thel shellr'l9, anrannular recess formed in the front section of the shell around the open-y y ing in jarnb-ring 9, gear-casing 12yhaving its rear portion disposed within this annular recess to the rear of the extreme front portion of the front section of the shell: 20, an inwardly flanged ring having itsperiphery in engagement with the interior of jambring 9, its rear flange being riveted tothe front vsurface of the rear portion of door 11.: 21, 'a plate secured to thefront of the front ian'ge 4of ring 20: 22, fireproof filling disposed within ring 20 and filling the 'space between plate 21 and the rear portion of the door: and 23, the gear secured to the exterior surface of the' door, within gearvcasing 12, tol serve in rotating the door, as usual in round doorV safes.
It .is our preference that the4 shell be formed in three sections, as illustrated,
though a greater or less number of sections may be employed. Regardless of how many sections are employed in the formation of theshell one of the joints between sections must 'be lcapable of being finally secured from the exterior of the' shell. ,Thus in Fig.
2, illustratingvthree sections as being 'enrvr l ployed in the shell, cover-strip7 may be permanently riveted in place before the shell is nally closed, but Vone of the cover-strips, as at 8, .may be riveted to one of the sections and secured tothe contiguous section by means of screws' going through the latter section andV into thecover-strip. An, approlpriate ultimately closed opening is to be provided-in the shell, preferably at its eX- treme bottom, through which the filling may be'- applied, r Jarnb-ringv 9 may be secured to the inner Vsafe by any appropriate means,
our preference being that, in case the inner safe is formed of manganesev steel, it beprovided with 'studs projecting from its front Wall and engaging and riveted in front of the rear flange projecting outwardly from the jamb-ring. The front section of the shell may be secured to a front flange, projecting outwardly from the. jamb-rng, by means of rivets or screws, but our preference is to employ'screws passing through the inner portion of the front section of the shell and screwing into the'front flange of the jamb-ring. Hinge-lugs 18 are carried by the jamb-ring, independent of the shell, thus permitting the door to be completely mounted and fitted in the absence of the shell. The recessing of the front ofl the shell, around the door-opening therethrough, permits the lessening of the forward projection of the gear-casing without any material impairment of the fireproof qualities of the safe. It is to be noted that the shell presents no exterior angles. This prevents injury in handling and gives to the general structure a peculiarly massive aspect, as much so as if the entire safe structure was a single burglar-proof safe of massive man ganese steel construction.
The door may be provided with such locking arrangements as are usual in safes Our preference 1s to.
of round door type; have the door provided at its front with a combination lock, for day locking purposes,
and at its rear with a timedock for night' security for the burglar-proof inner safe.
We claim l.
