To all whom 'it may concern.'

Be it known that I, FRANK R. MGBERTY, citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Telephone-Exchange Systems, of which the foli lowing is in full, clear, concise, and eXact description.

My invention relates to telephone exchange systems and contemplates in general an improved organization and arrangement of circuits and apparatus whereby thein-terconnection of subscribers lines 1n an eX- change of the semi-mechanical type may'be accomplished with rapidity Vand precision. The object of my invention is to provide,

in an exchange in which the interconnection A, of subscrlbers lmes 1s accomplished by mechanical switchingl apparatus under the control of an operator, improved and novel means whereby the automatic line selection may be simply and easily controlled and whereby such controlling means lmay be automatically associated .and dissociated with the mechanical switchingapparatus at the proper stages inl the operation of the system.

More particularly my invention relates to a switching system involving an improved operators sending or selector controlling equipment adapted for use with systems of practically any size having any'desired groupl ing of lines or trunks, and adapted to' operate with accuracy at high speed to cause the .various selecting and trunkehunting operations throughout a train of selectors to ta-ke place in proper sequence and With absolute precision. vFurthermore this sending equipment may be', andis preferably, so organized thatthe connections between subscribers lines' may be established, by the operator, in rapid succession by means of a singleset 'of keys,

vthere being no necessity for the operator to wait until the series of selections required for one call have been completed before beginning the establishment of a second call.

My invention, therefore, involves among other things the provision `of a set of keys arranged to be depressed by the operator, registering devices, responsive to said keys, adapted totake up and record the call indicated .by any combination of such keys, and automatic selection-controlling apparatus arranged to perform the required series u o n of )operations under control of such registering devices.

My invention further involves means, in

control of such equipment; this sending equipment being especiallyadapted for rapid operation by comparatively feeble current impulses transmitted over long lines or eables, and to continueautomatically to perform the entire sequence of control-ling operations at proper intervals and in definite order without requiring any attention from the operator beyond lthe initial registration of A,the call upon the key or keys.

Another feature of my invention involves the arrangement `in the operators sending apparatus of registers or translatingr devices whereby a number designating aline to be. selected, indicated by the operator upon keys arranged according to the decimal system of notation, may be stored up and translated by such registers or translators in such a manner that the selection-controlling device operated under the control of such registers or translators will select the line desired and indicated upon A the keys, even though such line or the trunks through which such line must be connected are not, or a part of them are not, arranged uponthe decimal system of notation Another feature of my invention involves means whereby the operators sending equipment may be'automatically associated with any one ofva plurality of connecting circuits which is put into use to answer a call, and

lnvolves automatic cord finder apparatus adapted to test said connecting circuits, find the one put into use and unite the sending equipment therewith, maintaining such connection until the sending equipment has completed its operation and then automatically disconnect it from the connecting circuit leaving it free to he associated with an- Y' other connectmg circuit to transnnt another cali.

Another feature of my invention involves means whereby, a plurality of senders may be provided for each operator, means associated with enchfj sender for connecting' it with a connecting circuit taken for use, and means for determining which of suclLsend-
