Improvement in Apparatus for Pitching Barrels, Ca'sks, 810

LOUIS SOHULZE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
iMPROl/EMENT IN APPARATUS FOR PETCHENG BARRELQ, CASKS, 8:.0.
Specification Forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,530, dated May 30, 1871.
I, LOUIS Sc eme, of Baltimore city, county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Pitching Barrels, &c., more especially those used in breweries, 850., of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Object of the Invention.
"My invention relates to an apparatus for centering large barrels, 830., for the purpose of pitching them; and it consists ina peculiar combination of parts, all of which will be more fully described in the annexed specification, enabling others to make and use the same.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a'half side elevation, half sectional elevation. Fig. 2 represents an end view. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of modifications of parts of the frame.
Like letters in the drawing refer to like parts.
Description.
In the drawing, A represents the bed or base of the frame, provided with rollers a a for the purpose of transportation. The ends of the base are recessed in the shape of a dovetail, into which recesses the ends of the two uprights B B snugly fit and slide. On
the bottom of this recess is arranged a rack or ratchet-bar, b b, or any other securing device may be employed for holding the uprights in position, a pawl, O, hinged thereto being here employed to catch into the teeth. Into the uprights B B are fitted the standards D D, having a rack-bar, d d, attached to'them on one side, into which. the pinion c on the shaft E'meshes. Upon one end of this shaft is arranged the gear-wheel c, which meshes into the pinion f on shaft F, which has a suitable crank, f, upon its other end" by which motion is imparted to the standards D D for raising and lowering them to suit the different heights of pitching-machines. The shafts E and F are journaled in suitable bearings on each side of the standards. Attached to the upper part of the standards are the cross-pieces G G, which are provided at each end with a rack or ratchet-bar, g g, for holding the transverse pieces H H, by a tooth, key, or pawl, in position, said pieces being notched out at their ends and slipped over the ends of the crosspieces. In the center of the cross-pieces G G and transverse pieces H H are arranged the pointed centering-screws I I, having a crank on one end. Upon "these screws the barrels are centered and freely and easily revolve, a small plate or center, '5 t, of metal being first fastened to the barrel.
To prevent any unnecessary delay in finding the proper center of the barrels I apply to the heads of the barrel a scale or measure, k k, slightly tapering, and sliding in a block, 1, secured to the head, and to which the center m is fastened.
If preferred, instead of the racks and pawls, set-screws or bolts 0?, with a head, 0, for turning them by a rod passed through the small holes in said head, may be used.
Modifications like these are shown in Figs. 3 and 4, for holding the standards or the cross-pieces in whatever position they may be placed.
The great advantages of my apparatus over all others hitherto used are-great simplicity of construction, durability, cheapness, no liability to get out of order, and great utility in operating, as can be readily understood, as it can be altered tosuit different sizes of barrels and pitching-machines.
Small friction-rollers, 12 12, may be applied to the uprights B for facilitating their movements backward and forward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of the frame A with standards D and cross-pieces Gr, constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of standards D and cross-pieces G with transverse pieces 11 and the screws I, arranged as shown, for the purpose set forth.
3. The arrangement of the bed A, uprights 2 name B, standards D, rack d, and pinion a, wheel The method for centering and revolving 0, and pinion f on shafts E and F, when conbarrels herein shown and described, as and struoted substantially as and for the purpose for the purpose set forth.
set forth. LOUIS SUHULZE.
4. The combination of the scales is 70 with ,YVitnesses:
block I and the barrel-heads, as and for the T. G. BREGHT,
purpose herein set forth. 7 WM. BURKE.
