Description
PATENT OEEICE.4v
` Artois EETELEE, oE NEW BRIGHTON, NEW Yonx. p
`|iviPRovlan/lsur iN DuMPlNG-CARS.
specification forming pm of Letters Patent No. 115,514, dated Maly so, 1871..
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI,AL`OIs PETELEm of New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State ofNew York, have invented anew and useful Improvement inDurnping-Oars and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear,
` 4and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing forming part of this specififrom which reachextend ,in a lateral direction four inclined rails in such amanner that very little poweris required to dump the contents of the box, while said box is prevented from moving endwise` by the seats in the reach.
On the ends of the box are secured frictionrollers, which travel in segmental rails, the
`ends of which form hooks, in such a manner that -when the box is tilted toward one side or the other the rollers are caught by the hooks and the box is prevented from dropping oil from the track. To the sides of the box are securedcheck-chains, which can be made to catch over` reversible `buttons secured to the i truck in such amanner that when both said chains are secured in their buttons the box is rmly held inposition, `and by turning either of the buttons the appropriatechain is ref leased and the contents of the box can be dumped. i l y In the drawing, the letter A designates the l box ofmy dumping-car, which is supported on rockers a. These rockers are Iprovided with i semicircular recesses b, to engage with seats, c,
(see Fig. 3,) in the reach B, said seats being rounded andsituated between shoulders or i projections, as seen'in Fig. 1, so that the rockers are conined in their positions and the box is prevented from moving lengthwise. From the seats c extend laterally the rails d', which are inclined from the reachdownward, so that `when the box is `turned Adown `sidewise the .rockers will roll easily on they inclined rails,
and comparatively little exertion is required. to dump the contents of the box. From the rails d project pins or teeth r, to engage with holes in the rockers, and to prevent said rocklers from slipping on the rails during the operation'of the dumping. If the rails d are made horizontal it requires two or more men to dump a car filled with earth; but by making the rails inclined one man is. enabled to perform the operation. In the ends ofthe box A are secured rollers d, which travel on segmental rails e, (see Fig.`2,) and the ends of these rails are bent into hooks g, so that during the operation of turning the box down sidewisethe rollers d facilitate its motion, and that `while the contents ofthe box are being dumped the rollers d catch .in the hooks g, as shown in Fig. 2, and prevent the box from dropping off from the truck. 0n the sides of the box A are secured chains o, which can be made to catch under buttons p fastened in the truck-frame. If both these chains are secured in their buttons the box A is retained in a horizontal po- Y sition.
The buttons are so constructed that they can be turned uptorelease their chains, and, if the check-chain on one side of the box is released, said box can be'turned down toward the opposite side and its contents can be dumped; and after this object has been accomplished the box can be easily turned back and fastened -in its horizontal position ready to receive a fresh load.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rockers a provided with recesses b,
