To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBIN E. BERGLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Motley, in. the county of Morrison, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sleighs and particularly to attachments therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and novel attachment for a one-horse sleigh or cutter which carries an additional seat.
Another object is to provide a device of this'character which is of simple construction and which can be readily applied to the ordinary one-horse sleigh or cutter.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sleigh having my attachmentmounted thereon, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail through the members which secure the attachment to the runners, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the side bars for holding the attachment to the sleigh, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the frame of the attachment and Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the body of the cutter, 11 the runners and 12 the bars which are connected to the raves 13 at their upper ends. The rear of the shoe 14 of each of the runners is curled up into a ring 15 at the rear end of the runner of the usual construction. Disposed on each side of the body just above the raves are the longitudinally extending bars or rods 16, the forward end of each of which is threaded and is received in an eye 17 of a transverse rod 18 disposed at the front of the raves. This rod 18 is provided with a turn buckle 19 and on the threaded ends of the rods 16 are applied nuts 20. The rear end of each of the rods 16 is formed with an eye 21 and through these eyes there is passed a bolt 22 extending across the rear of the sleigh. A fender or protector 23 is disposed against the rear of the sleigh body and is provided with openings through which the bolt 22 also passes. A rearward extension 24 is formed on each eye portion 21 and extending vertically from each of these projections is a threaded stud 25.
A frame including the curved members 26 and the horizontal frame portion 27 is disposed at the rear of the body 10, and mounted on this frame is an auxiliary seat 28. The lower ends of the curved members 26 are provided with the socketed members 29 which engage over the curled portions 15 of the runner shoes, bolts 30 being passed through the socket members and the curled portions 15 to hold the curved members to the runners. These socket members are formed at the lower ends of the middle binding strips 31 which extend on the outer faces of the curved members and the upper portions of the frame at the sides, and on the forward ends of the side portions of the upper part of the binding strips are formed the horizontally disposed eye members 32 into which are engaged the before-mentioned threaded studs 25 and nuts 33 screwed on to said studs. A suitable bracket 34: is carried by the forward portion at each side of the frame 27 and from these brackets to the curved members 26 extend inclined bars 35. Thus with this device attached to the sleigh the cutter is augmented so that a two-seated sleigh is produced.
The device is of such construction as has been heretofore set forth that it is readily attachable to the ordinary cutter, and can be readily applied thereto or detached therefrom in a very short time. By providing the fender or guard 23 the back of the body 10 is protected from being marred by the persons who occupy the auxiliary seat so that when the auxiliary seat is removed there will be nothing to indicate that the device had been attached thereto.
It will be noted that the fender extends around the body of the sleigh and conforms to the shape thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for a cutter comprising a frame disposed at the rear of the body of the cutter, means carried by the frame and detachably engaged around the body of the cutter for holding the frame in position, and
means carried by the frame detachably engaged With the rear of the runners of the cutter for supporting the frame. 7
2. An auxiliary seat attachment for a cutter comprising a frame including downwardly and forwardly extending supports, and a seat, means detaohably connecting the supports with the rear of the runners of the cutter, bars extending longitudinally on each side of the body of the cutter means detachably connected to the forward ends of the bars, means detachably connected to the rear ends of the bars, a guard carried by the rear connecting means, and means carried ALBIN E. BERGLUND.
