To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. VAN Dorm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Electric-Light Hanger and Ad juster for Mast-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combination lamp hanger and adjuster for mast arms, and an object of the invention is the provision of a useful improved device of this nature, whereby the lamp, such as an electric arc lamp may be suspended from the mast arm normally at the usual height, and provided with means, whereby in case the hanger mechanism is tampered with by unauthorized parties, such as boys and the like, the lamp will be prevented from accidentally lowering or falling.

Another aim of the invention is the provision of such anchoring means for the hanger mechanism, that the lamp man or repairer may easily, quickly and conveniently attach a suitable rope of the proper length, so that the lamp may be lowered, and the end of the rope fastened to the mast, while the lamp is repaired. After repairs have been administered the rope belonging to the lamp or repair man may be easily detached, that is, subsequently to returning the lamp to its normal position.

In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a mast and arm, showing the improved hanger and adjusting mechanism as applied, showing the lamp suspended at the usual height from the arm. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the lamp lowered. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the connection between the rope of the hanger mechanism and the mast. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line l4; of Fig. 3.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a mast; pole, or standard having a mast arm 2, which is provided with pulleys 3 and 4. The mast, pole or standard is provided with a hook 5, the hook Specification of Letters Patent.

portion of which extends downwardly and spaced below the hook 5 is a staple 6. A lamp, such as an electric arc lamp 7, is provided having a cable or rope 8 passing over said pulleys 3 and 4. A suitable padlock clamp 9 is provided, which comprises a Gas ing 10 having an integral eye or ring 11, designed to normally engage the hook 5. One facing of the casing 10 of the padlock clamp is open, as shown, and is provided with a cover or closure 12 having an aperture 13. This cover or closure is of a contour or shape corresponding with the shape of the casing, and designed to lit the same. The inner wall of the casing is provided with a raised U or horseshoe-shaped portion 14, of an area smaller than the contour of the casing, but substantially of the same shape, thereby forming a rope channel 15, in which the lower end portion of the rope 8 is seated, as shown in the sectional view of said clamp. A screw passes through the aperture in the cover or closure, and through a corresponding registering aperture of the wall of the casing, which screw 17 on its threaded end is provided with a nut 18, which is countersunken in the outer face of said casing, thereby clamping the closure or cover securely in place, and holding the rope against slipping.

To further secure and insure the rope against slipping, with relation to the casin the inner wall of the casing is provided with ribs 19 which contact with the rope. The inner face of the cover or closure is also provided with ribs 20, serving the same purpose as performed by the ribs 19. An S- shaped link 21 is connected to the eye 11, and in the lower eye of said link a ring 22 is connected, to which a conventional form of snap hook 24: is swivelly connected as at 25. As before stated, the ring or eye 11 normally engages the hook 5, and it will be observed that the snap hook normally engages the staple 6, therefore, it will be read ily understood that, in case some uhauthorized party, such as bovs or the like, should tamper with said connection, for instance, to disconnect the eye or ring 11 from the hook 5, the lamp 7 will still remain raised, owing to the fact that the snap hook is still in engagement with the staple 6. When the lamp or repair man desires to lower the lamp for repairs, such as for cleaning, adjusting the parts, or providing new carbons, an extra rope or cable 26 having snap hooks 27 and 28 at both endsis supplied, and is connected as shown in Fig. 2. For instance, the snap hook 27 (which, iffound preferable and desirable, may be a ring) is connected to the snap hook 24, that is, subsequently to having detached the ring 11 from the hook5 and the snap hook :24; from the staple, after which the lamp may be lowered, and the snap hook 28 connected to the staple, and in this case the lamp or repair man, without any inconvenience, may readily repair. the

lamp as required. After repairing the lampadjustably connected thereto comprising a ropev clamp having an eye engageable with said hook, and an auxiliary connection betweenthe eye and the staple.

In combination with a mast having a lateral arm provided with pulleys, a rope or cable passing over the pulleys and having at one end a lamp, a hookadjacent the lower portion of the mast, and a staple spaced apart below the hook; an anchoring connection adjustably connected to the lower end of the cable or rope comprising a rope clamp having rope biting means to prevent Copies of this patent may be obtained for slipping of the rope and provided with an 7 eye at its lower portion engageable with said hook, an auxiliary connection comprising a snap hook having a swivel and link connection with said eye and adapted to engage said staple, said snap hook adapted to be connected to an extra rope whereby the lamp mayv be lowered, which extra rope is designed to be connected to the staple.

In combination with a mast having a lateral arm provided with pulleys, a rope or cable passing over the pulleys and having at one end a lamp, a hook adjacent the lower portion of the mast, and a staple spaced o apart below the hook;ean anchoring connection adjustably connected to the lower end of the cable or rope, which anchoring connection includes a rope clamp'of horse shoe shape comprising'two parts, one embedded in the other, and one having: rope biting means to prevent slipping of the rope and provided with an eye at its lower portion en gageable with said hook, said anchoring con ne'ction including an auxiliary connection consisting of a snap hook having a swivel and link connection with said eye and adapted to engage said staple, said snap hook adaptedto be connected to an extra rope whereby the lamp may be lowered, which extra rope is designed to be connected to the staple. t
