Description

P. M. CHURCH.
KNIFE SHARPENER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 15. 1915.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
STATES PATEN PIIILETUS M. CHURCH, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 'IO NATIONAL SERVICE SELLING COMPANY, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILETUS M. CHURCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knifesharpeners, and has for its primary object to provide a sharpener so constructed as to provide a portion thereof especially adapted for roughly sharpening the knife and to provide a smooth or finishing portion for putting a sharp edge on the knife thus treated.
Another object is to provide a sharpener constructed from a piece of metal having all of the pieces thereof smooth, thus greatly reducing the cost of manufacture and increasing the efficiency and longevity of the same.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the, drawings by numerals, 1 designates an elongated substantially semicircularly shaped piece of metal which forms the sharpener, a handle 2 being fastened to one end thereof for a purpose which is obvious. In plan, the free end of the blade 1 is tapered to a point as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and the lower rounded portion of the blade is curved upwardly at the free end thereof so as to provide a sharp point 3.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 21, 1915. Application filed February 15, 1915.
Serial No. 8,230.
The upper relatively straight face of the blade 1 is concaved, as shown at 4, in order to provide the sharp edges 5 at a point where this face meets the rounded face of the blade.
In use, a knife is first sharpened by drawing the same across the sharp edges 5 of the steel blade 1 which removes in a quick manner the thicker portions of the edge to be sharpened. By a slight turn of either the knife or the sharpener the knife can be finished on the rounded side of the steel in the ordinary manner.
An advantage of the structure described is that the edges 5 may be easily ground when worn, so that its essential sharp edge may be maintained in a working condition, the concaved upper face of the blade providing for such sharpening.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be clearly understood and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto, except for such limitations as the claim may import.
What is claimed is A device of the character described comprising an elongated body portion substantially semi-circular in cross section, said body portion tapering toward its outer end, the upper face of said body portion being concaved to form a pair of extending edges and a handle at one end of said body portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
