' Be it known that I, Bnaxuann KRAMER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Charlottenburg, Germany, have 1nvented certain new .and useful Improvements in Combined Pump and Emergency Governors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines. especially 'to that type in which liquid fuel is forced into the cylinder subsequent to a charge of highly compressed air, the fuel being ignited by the high temperature of said air. I
One object of the invention is to permit a portion of the fuel forced by the pump to return to the suction side thereof in case any unpermissibly high forcing pressure arises.
Another object of the invention is to enable a speed responsive device to interrupt the supply of fuel to the cylinder. and thus stop the engine.
A further object is to enable the engineer to use the same device to stop the engine by hand.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional view of the worl; ing parts of my inventiom'and Fig.2 illustrates its application to an upright engine.
The pump plunger 1 is driven in any suitable manner by the engine: as for instance, by a lever 2 fulcrumed at 3 and actuated in one direction by a cam 4 on the engine shaft 5. and in the other direction by a spring (3. The plunger draws liquid fuel fl'OlIiiL cham ber 7 through an inlet valve 8, and forces it through the outlet valve 9 into the delivery pipe 10 leading to the cylinder .of the engine. A bypass 11 and port 12 connect the delivery pipe with the suction chamber. A valve 13 controls the bypass 11, being pressed upon its seat by a spring 14. which is set to resist a predetermined pressure in the delivery pipe. The spring preferably abuts between a collar 15 on the valve stem 16 and the upper end of a movable abutment. preferably a sleeve 17 freely movable lengthwise on said stem. Said sleeve is supported in operative position by a detent, preferably a pawl or latch 18 mounted on a lever 19 and engaging with a shoulder 20 on said sleeve. A spring 21 urges said pawl into operative position.
The engine shaft carries a speed responsiw device in the form of a radial spring es plunger 22, which is acted upon by centrifugal force, and at an abnormally high speed will project so far as to strike the lever 19 and trip the pawl 1591. This relaxes the spring. and so far relieves its pressure on the valve 13 that said valve is instantly forccd open by the liquid pressure in the delivery pipe. so as to open the overtiow port 12. and bypass the fuel back to the suction chamber; the effect of which is to stop the engine. The lever 19 is provided with a handle 23. so that when the engineer wishes to stop the engine I he can do so by simply pressing down on said handle. thereby tripping the pawl by hand. The employment of this mode of hand control keeps this overflow valve 13 always ready for emergency operation. by preventing it from becoming plugged up by deposition of impurities in the fuel.
F or resetting the overflow valve. I provide a hand lever 24- fulcrumed at 25. and adapted to engage with the sleeve 17 to lift the same high enough for the pawl or latch 18 to engage with the shoulder 20 thereon. A spring 26 keeps the lever 24.- depressed. so that it will not interfere with the drop of the sleeve when the pawl is tripped.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes. I have described the prinoiple of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative. and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
What 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is
1. In a pump. the combination of a cylinder. a plunger therein. suction and discharge valves for the cylinder, means forming a by-pass connecting the discharge side. of the pump at a point beyond the discharge valve to a region of lower pressure. a valve for said by-pass. a spring that actively opposes the opening of such valve. and means for suddenly relaxing said spring.
2. The combination with an internal combustion engine. of a liquid fuel thereto having suction and delivery valves. a by-pass valve on the discharge side of the delivery valve controlling the passage of fluid from the delivery to the suction side of the pump, a spring that normally holds the valve against its seat. an abutment for the spring, and means for pump for supplying I quickly removing the abutment to relax said spring.
3. The comblnation with an internal combustion engine, of a pump for supplying fuel thereto comprising a cylinder, a plunger therein, suction and discharge valves for the cylinden'means forming a by-pass connecting the discharge side of the pump at a point beyond the discharge valve to a region of lower pressure, a valve for said by-pass, a spring that actively opposes the opening of such valve, and speed responsive means for relaxing said spring when the engine attains excessive speed. 4. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a pump for supplying it with liquid fuel, said pump having a bypass leading .from the delivery to the suction side, a valve for said bypass, a spring for seating said valve. a movable abutment for said spring, a detent for said abutment, speed responsive means for releasing said detent when the engine attains excessive speed.
5. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a pump for supplying it with liquid fuel, said pump having a bypass leading from the delivery to the suction side, a valve for said bypass, a spring for seating said valve, a sleeve on the valve stem serving as an abutment for said spring, a pawl engaging a shoulder on said sleeve, and a speed-responsive device adapted to trip said pawl.
6. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a pump for supplying it with liquid fuel, said pump having a bypass leading from the delivery to the suction side, a valve for said bypass, a spring for seating said valve, a sleeve on the valve stem-serving as an abutment for said spring, a pawl engaging a shoulder on said sleeve, a lever carrying said pawl and having a handle, and a speed-responsive device adapted to actuate said lever, whereby said pawl can be tripped either by hand or automatically, to stop said engine.
7. The combination with an internal com-' bustion engine, of a pump for supplying it with liquid fuel, said pump having a bvpass leading from the delivery to the suction side, a valve for said bypass, a spring for seating said valve, a sleeve on the valve stem serving as an abutment for said spring, a pawl engaging a shoulder on said sleeve, and a speed-responsive device adapted to trip said pawl and a lever arranged to reset said sleeve and valve.

In a pump, the combination of a casing, a driving shaft, a plunger, suction and discharge valves, means driven by the shaft for moving the plunger, a by-pass valve, a spring that normally holds it against its seat, an abutment for the spring, and means actuated by the shaft for releasing the abutment and permitting the by-pass valve to open when the speed exceeds a predetermined valve.
9. In a pump, the combination of a casing, a driving shaft, a plunger, suction and discharge valves, means driven by the shaft for moving the plunger, a by-pass valve, a spring that normally holds it against its seat, an abutment for the spring, a latch which normally holds the abutment in place and maintains the spring under the desired tension, an emergencygovernor. and means actuated by the governor to withdraw the latch and relieve the tension of the spring.
10. In a pump, the combination of a driving shaft, a plunger, suction and discharge valves, means driven by the shaft for moving the plunger, a spring seated by-pass valve, an abutment for the spring, means actuated by the shaft to release the abutment, and a handle for compressing the spring and re-setting the abutment.
11. Ina pump, the combination of a cylinder, a plunger therein, a discharge valve for the cylinder, means forming a by-pass connecting the discharge side of the pump at a point beyond the discharge valve to a region of lower pressure, a normally closed valve in said lay-pass, detent controlled means for. effecting the opening of said valve, means for tripping said detent, and means for resetting the valve and detent.
12. The combination with an internal combustion engine, of a pump for supplying fuel thereto comprising a cylinder, a plunger therefor, a discharge valve for the cylinder, means forming a. by-pass connecting the discharge side of the pump at a point beyond the discharge valve to a region of lower pressure, a normally closed valve for said by-pass, detent controlled means for effecting the opening of said valve, speed responsive means for tripping said detent when the engine attains excessive speed, and means for resetting the valve and detent.
