GRASS-CATCHER.

To all whom it mag] concern Be it known that I, JAMns P. HASSERIES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grass- Catchers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in grass catchers designed particularly for use in connection with lawn mowers, the primary object of the invention being the elimination of certain objectionable features found in most of the grass catchers with which I am familiar.

In many of the grass catchers now on the market the cost of production is increased because of the complicated construction and multiplicity of parts necessary to produce rigidity and durability in such devices. These objectionable features are overcome in the present invention by constructing the device of comparatively few parts and combining them and arranging them.in such manner as to provide a well braced, rigid receptacle for the purpose intended.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed, and the elements combined. in the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a grass catcher embodying the novel features of my invention. ig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view, enlarged. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grass catcher in folded position.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as best illustrated in Fig. 1, the grass catcher comprises five essential elements, as the metallic bottom 1; the sides 2, 2, and back 3 composed of the single piece of textile fabric, as canvas; the U-shaped wire bow 4 forming the front of the frame: the U-shaped bow forming the bottom 5 of the frame; and the top 6 of the frame. The top portion of the frame comprises a single bent wire surrounding three sides of the receptacle in a U-shaped bow, as 6. the front ends of the bow being fashioned with squared loops 7, 7 to which the eves 8, 8, of the front wire 4 are attached. thetwo portions of the wire are brought together and lie parallel to accommodate the handle or hand grasp 11. From the portion 10 the ends of the wire diverge to the rear, and by means of the eyes 12, 12 the ends are attached to the rear bar of the bow 6. In this. manner the entire top portion of the frame of the receptaclenis made up of one piece bent to proper shape and so arranged as to brace itself and provide a rigid suspending portion. The metallic bottom 1, which is of sheet metal, is-curled over at 13 forming attachment to the long bar of the front bow & of the frame, and the connection is made loosely so that the front bow may turn in the curl to the rear when the receptacle is being folded.

In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the edges of the metal bottom are also curled over the bottom frame 5, as at 14, and the canvas or other flexible textile material forming the sides and back of the receptacle, is made with a hem 15, extending entirely around the bottom and top, and up the upright bars of the front portion of the wire frame, through which the framework of wire passes, and the canvas portion is fastened to the metallic bottom 1 by means of the bent or curled edges of the bottom at 14:. A suspending hook 16 at the rear adapted to be attached to a suitable portion of the lawn mower, co-acts with the hooks 18, 18 (dotted lines Fig. l) which pass through slots 17, 17, in the metallic bottom. This ar-- rangement'forms a three point suspension for the receptacle, holding the catcher rigidly, and preventing collapse while itis in use.

In Fig. 3 the device is illustrated in folded position. This may be accomplished without the necessitv of loosening or disengaging any parts of the receptacle, as the parts will naturally fall into collapsed or folded position as soon as the top portion of the frame is released from its suspended position. Thus the receptacle may be folded into flat shape for storing or shipping, with facility and despatch, and inasmuch as no parts are ever loosened or detached, loss of parts is entirely eliminated.

I claim 1. The combination in a collapsible grass catcher comprising a bottom, a frame, flexible side walls, and. a flexible end wall to the device, of a top portion to said frame composed of a U-shaped bow having loops, :1.

front wire with eyes attached to said loops, said bow having its ends beyond the loops bent toward the center of the catcher into diagonal braces and attached to the rear bar of the U shaped part, and a portion of said braces formed into a handle.

In a grass catcher, the combination with a top frame formed of a U-shape bow of wire having squared loops at the ends of the bow, of a front U-shaped bow loosely connected to said squared loops and adapted to swing upon a pivot, a bottom in which the front bow is pivoted, and canvas sides and back connecting the top frame and bottom.

4. A collapsible grass catcher having a bottom and U-shaped bottom frame, a front foldable U-shaped frame pivoted in the bottom and provided with attaching means at its ends, a U-shaped top portion connected to said attaching means, the ends of said top portion being brought together to form a handle and connected to the body of the. said portion, and flexible side and end Walls to said catcher.
