To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CriARLns JOHN PRAN- KARD, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county 01: Reusselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for shaping and folding collars.
The object of the invention is to provide heated mechanism for folding the collars, and then pass the latter through a combined guide and drying; chamber to remove the dampness: and mechanism for finally coinpressing the folded collars after they leave the chamber, to set and preserve the shape and fold, and at the same time insure of them being concentric.
These features and the details of construction in connection therewith as Well as other objects and advantages will be here inafte'r referred to and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A vertical guide is located conveniently to direct collars between the rolls & and 6, and it consists of a base 10, and a vertical member 11. Member 11, is hollow to form a heating chamber 12, and its reduced lower end 13, fits in an opening- 14, formed in the bed plate 1, and is furnished with heat by a burner connected to a pipe 15. The upper portion oi member 11, is tapered slightly, as snown in Fig. .2 to form a seat to receive the collar, while its base may be adjusted through the medium of slots and set screws 16. The edge of the member 11, next to the rolls is pro ided with a yielding plate or flat spring; 17, secured by rivets or the like. The edge of the spring; bears on the roll 4, to compel the collar to impinge it to start the shaping. While spring, 17, tends to direct the collar band, it is essential that the outside flap be deflected to turn it before being passed between the rolls. 1 have therefore ocated a guide plate 19, adjacent the meetinq faces oi? rolls 4- and 6, and the vertical ,de member 11, which coacts with the latter to direct the collar between the folding rolls; Cooperating with the upper edge of the vertical guide is a pressing element or iron for ironing the top of the fold. I find for one class of work, one form of iron pro duc etter results than a second form used when opera upon another class of work, and l have shown two structures to meet this rerniirement.

Adjacent the eXit of the space between rolls 4 and 6, is a drying chamber or guide 35. The chamber is formed of two members, 36 and 37, and a top 38, Member 36, is bent at its lower end to form a base, which is adjustablv mounted by bolts and slots 86 on the bed plate 1, over an opening 40, within which is a burner, connected to a pipe 41, to provide means for heating the chamber. The inneredge of the member 36, fits snugly the periphery of roll 4, a little to one side the center, to form ample space for the collars to turn to give the proper curve. Member 37, is curved and its inner end 42, fits nicely the periphery of r0116, to provide a suitable space for the collar, while its oppo site end converges toward the end of member 36, to form a contracted exit pening 43.
Member 37, is secured in position by braces 44, bolted to the bed plate, and the top 38, is fastened'to these braces.
' Located adjacent the eXit opening 43, is a small slightly tapered rubber face roller 45, adjacent which the free outwardly curved spring end 46, of the member 37, is located. Adjacent the roller 45, and contacting therewith is a larger slightly tapered roll 46, covered with rubber 47, over which is a covering of cloth 48. Roll 46, is mounted in a bearing 46 which is pivoted to the bed plate, and a spring 49, contacting with the bearing, serves to force the roll into contact with roll 45; a set screw 50, being employed to regulate the pressure. A gear wheel 51, on roll 46?, meshes with a pinion 45 on roll 45, through which medium the necessary motion is imparted to the two rolls to feed the collars to curl them. The purpose of the spring 46, is to hold the collar in close 'contact with the roll 45, to'assist in directing the collar to the roll 46*.
The shaft of roll 6, passes through an opening in an arm 53, which is pivoted to a lever 54. The lever 54, is pivoted at one end to the bed plate, and its opposite end is free. v
vVhen it is desired to separate the rolls 4, and 6, the free end of the lever is moved and placed behind a stop 54 The shaft 7, of
roll '6, ismounted at its lower endin a bearing'formed in a frame 56, fastened to the underside of the bed plate, and an arm 57,
also pivoted to the underside of the said bed plate. On the hub of this arm bears a spring 58, engaged at its opposite end by a set screw 59, to regulate the pressure. The function of the spring is to force roll 6, into contact with roll 4, and by reason of this adjustment the shaft of said roll must necessarily move also; hence I provide the peculiar construction described. Mounted on this shaft is a sprocket wheel 60, and a pinion 61, the latter being slightly smaller than the former.
Pinion 61, meshes with a larger gear 62, mounted on the shaft 3, of roll 4, said shaft also having secured to it a beveled pinion 63. A sprocket chain 64, connects sprocket wheel 60, with a sprocket wheel 65, on a sleeve mounted on a stub shaft the sleeve also carries a gear wheel 66, which meshes with a pinion 67, on the shaft carrying the roll 45.
70, indicates a shaft mounted under the bed plate, and it has at one end a beveled pinion 71, meshing with the pinion 63, and on the opposite end of shaft is a gear wheel 72, and a grooved pulley 73. Passing around pulley 73, and a pulley 74, on the shaft 20, is a belt 75, by means of which, power is communicated to the pressing element or iron 33, while gear 72, meshes with a pinion 76, mounted on a power shaft 77, carrying fast and loose pulleys 78 and 79.
A burner on the end of a pipe 7 9, in the interior of the pressing element or iron 33, serves as a means for heating it while a similar burner on a pipe 81, fits into roll 4, to heat it. The pipes 15, 41, 79, and 81., are supported on a bracket 82, rising from the bed 1, and said pipes are connected to a Y connection 83, one branch of which is connected to an air supply, while the other branch is connected to a gas supply. The mixture of gas and air serves to give a blue flame to thoroughly heat the parts.
In operation, the operator places the fold line of a collar between the upper edge of the vertical standard 11, and the iron 33, and by reason of the location of the guides the band and flap of the collar are gradually turned down and fed between the rolls 4 and 6. The seam of the collar is at one side of the fold line, and to supply the necessary pressure to fold it, the rolls are slightly opened, because of the bevel construction, so that at the fold line the shoulder 5, will apply suflicient pressure to effectively press the fabric and fold it, it being borne in mind of course, that the collar was previously dampened along its fold line. The spring plate, 17, opens under the force exerted on it by the collar, to allow the latter to freely enter between the rolls, and yet pressure enough is maintained to press the collar band against roll 4. The iron 33, and the guide member 11, being highly heated the fold line is ironed while the folding is going 1,153,337 ill;
on, which preserves the looks of the collar and materially assists in preventing the fabric cracking.
As the collar passes from between the rolls 4 and 6, it enters the drying chamber 35. The diameter of roll 4, gives to the collar its first curl, and the end strikes the member 36, until sufficient of the body is fed between the rolls, when there is a slackness in the chamber, as shown in dotted line in Fig. 6, which causes the outside flap to contact with the member 37. When the end of the collar reaches the exit 43, it contacts with the roll 45, and is deflected against the spring end 46 of member 37, and is fed by roll 45 until it is caught between said roll and roll 46 and is rapidly pulled from-the drying chamber and given its final or set curl. The rolls 45 and 46 grip the collar before the rolls 4 and 6 release it, and draw it through the drying chamber. The drying chamber isheated as heretofore stated, so that during the entire period the collar is in transit from the rolls 4 and 6, until exit 43, is reached, the dampness in the collar is beingremoved, hence when the rolls 45 and 46 compress the fold it is substantially dry.
The chamber performs another most important function, in addition to the drying, in that it guides the collar to assist and insure of the curl being substantially concentric. When thc collar enters the chamber it has a tendency to twist upwardly, due to the shape of the rolls 4 and 6, but the top 38, holds it down. The end of the collar therefore is constantly forced downwardlyin transit through the chamber and as it is drying during this period, the curl is set, and as the rolls 45 and 46 are tapered and shouldered,the tendency is to further counteract the upwardtendency.
After a collar is released by the rolls 4 and 6, and is being drawn by the rolls 45 and 46, it may be accidentally drawn downwardly, and to prevent it from becoming entangled with the gears 51 and 45 1 have provided a guard 90, which snugly fits the lower end of roll 46*, and in a groove in the lower end of roll 45. The guard may be secured in any suitable manner, but I preferably fasten it to the pivoted bearing 46", as shown in Fig. 5.
ll. collar coming from between rolls 45, 46, is caused to curl as shown in Fig. 6', and is delivered to a platform 91, supported on standard 92, adjustably mounted on the bed 1. The platform may be tilted so as to cause the collars to fall therefrom into a receptacle 94. A shield 95, protects the collars fro-m being soiled by the gearing, but
. because of it obscuring the structure I have only indicated it in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Power is applied to the shaft 77, and through the gears 7276, shaft is revolved, which also imparts motion to shaft sprocket chain connection, and the gears operated in connection therewith, the rolls 45 and 46, are revolved.
In Fig. 12 I have shown a modified form of iron 33*. This iron consists of a hollow head 96, formed on its under side with a slight groove 97, to fit over the edge of the member 11, and a side flange 98, to assist in folding the collar. A hollow head 99, is secured to the head 96, the two heads forming a heating chamber, heated by a burner connected to a ,pipe furnished with a sup ply of gas. An arm 100, extends from the head 99, and it is pivoted to a standard to be secured to the bed 1, a springlOl, connected to the arm and a support, serves to create pressure of the iron on the edge of member 11, while a set screw 102, limits the downward movement of said arm.
When the machine is not in use the lever 54, is moved and the spring 58, is compressed then the lever is dropped behind the pin, 54*, and the heat of roll 4, is prevented from destroying the resilient quality of the cloth and rubber of roll, 6.
115 in Fig. 14 represents a shaft carrying two pulleys 116 and 117, the former receiving a twisted belt 118, which also passes around pulley 73. A belt 119 passes around pulley 117 and pulley 74, on the shaft 20, to impart motion to the revolving iron 33.
This particular construction is to accommodate different thickness of collars, the arrangement of the belt 119 allowing of the iron raising sufliciently, as will be readily understood.
It may be found desirable to compress the seam of a collar to a greater degree than would ordinarily be required to render it perfectly flat. This would be necessary where there are an unusual number of plies, or the fabric is somewhat thicker than ordinarily employed. To meet this contingency I have constructed the rolls accordingly. The folding roll 120, is provided with a beveled shoulder 122, while the companion folding roll 121 is provided with an overhanging flange 123, which is beveled on its under side to correspond to the beveled surface of the shoulder 122, as shown in Fig. 15. The curling rolls are constructed so as to cooperate with the flange and shoulder as shown in Fig. 16. The curling roll 124, is formed with a beveled shoulder 126, and the cooperating roll 125. is formed with an overhanging beveled flange 127.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a collar folding machine, the combination with folding mechanism, having a guide to engage the inside of a collar, an ironing element to press the collar on said guide, and a chamber adjacent the folding .mechanism into which the folded collars enter, saidchamber tapering toward its exit end and to gradually straighten the collar to causeit to pass out of said chamber.
2. 4. In a collar folding machine, the combination with ironing mechanism, folding means located adjacent the ironing mechanism, a platform having an opening, a burner in said opening, and a drying chamber closed at its top and sides, said drying chamber'being located adjacent the folding means, and over the opening.
5. .In a collar folding machine, the combination with an ironer, folding mechanism adjacent the ironer formed to direct a collar toward the top of a drying chamber, means for heating said mechanism, a drying chamber having a top, means for heating the drying chamber, means for drawing the collar from the drying chamber, said means forming a tapered passage for the collar to draw it from the top of the drying chamber.
6. In a collar folding machine, the combination with a guide over which a collar is V folded along its seam line, an iron operating over the guide to iron the fold of a collar,
' tapered folding rolls, one of which is formed with a shoulder which bears against the other said roller for compressing the collar, means for heating one of the rolls, means interior of the guide for heating the same, and a chamber adjacent the folding rolls and into which the folded collar enters.
7. In a collar folding machine, the combination with a heated guide, a heated iron bearing on the guide, a supplemental guide adjacent the heated guide, a pair of tapered folding rolls, one of which is formed with a shoulder and the other covered with resilient material, means for heating the shouldered roll, and achamber adjacent the roll and into which a folded collar enters.
8. Ina collar folding machine, the combination with an ironer, a pair of folding rolls located adjacent the ironer, means for heating one of said rolls, a movable spring actuated bearing supporting one of the rolls, manual means for separating the rolls, a chamber adjacent the rolls and into which folded collars are delivered fromsaid rolls, andmeans at the exit of the chamber to withdraw thecollar from the chamber.
9. In a collar folding machine, the combinationawith a pair of folding rolls, means :for heating one of said rolls, a heated re- ?volvin'g iron, for ironing the folded edge of the collar, means for guidingacollar to the rolls and a ;plate cooperating with the guide to prevent the end of the collar being turned in the wrong direction when approaching the rolls.
10. In a 'collar folding machine, the combinationfivith' ironing means, folding means located adjacent the ironing means, a drying chamber adjacent to' and'wholly independent of the folding means to receive folded collars, said drying chamber being of greater area adjacent the rolls than at its exit end, to permit the collar to temporarily curl after leaving the folding means and to gradually straighten out as it nears the exit end, separate means for heating the drying chamber, and means at the exit end of the chamber for withdrawing the collar.
11. In a collar folding machine, the combination with ironing mechanism, folding means including rolls, a tapering chamber independent of the folding means and shaped and located relative to the rolls to permit the collar to expand after entering the mouth of the chamber from the folding means and gradually become flattened as it nears the exit of said chamber and before leaving said chamber, and movable means at the exit of the chamber, said movable means serving to draw the collar from the chamber and also compress it.
12. 'In a collar folding machine, the combination with folding mechanism, means under pressure for ironing the fold of the collar on its edge, a tapered chamber independent of the folding means and cooperating with the folding mechanism to press the collar to prevent its being curled in spiral form and flattening said collar as it nears the chamber exit.
13. In a collar folding machine, the combination with an ironer, folding mechanism consisting of a pair of tapered rolls located adjacent the ironer, a chamber, the rolls forcing the collar toward the upper part of the chamber, and a pair of tapered rolls for drawing the collar from the chamber.
14. In a collar folding machine, the combination with folding mechanism, means for ironing the folded edge of the collar, a
rear ends, and means independent of the folding mechanism for drawing the collar from the chamber, and a platform on which the folded collars are delivered.
15. In a collar folding and shaping machine, a revolving element for ironing the top of the fold of a collar, a heated chamber, and revolving means at the exit of the chamber for curling the collar.
16. In a collar folding and shaping machine, in combination, folding means, means for ironing the top of the fold of a collar, means for curling a collar separate from the folding and ironing means, and guiding means between the folding means and the curling. ,means, the guiding means being wide enough to at one end permit the collar to temporarily curl when it leaves the foldingimeans, and tapers at its opposite end to direct the collar to the curling means from said: guiding, means.
17. In a collar folding machine, the combination with an ironer, folding mechanism located adjacent to and cooperating with the ironer, a drying chamber, a pair of drawing rolls at the eXit of the drying chamber, the drying chamber having a spring end which lies adjacent one of the rolls, and means for operating the rolls.
18. In: a collar folding and shaping machine in combination, a revolving element for ironing the top edge of the fold of a collar, a pair of rolls, one of said rolls having a covering of resilient material, a second pair of rolls, one of said rolls having a. covering of resilient material, and hollow means open at one end adjacent the first pair of rolls and open at the opposite end adjacent the second pair of rolls for guiding the collar from the first pair of rolls to the second pair of rolls.
19. In a collar folding and shaping ma chine, the combination with means for ironing the top of the fold of a collar, folding rolls, one of the rolls having a covering of resilient material, curling means separate from the folding rolls, and means guiding a collar from the folding rolls to the curling means, said guiding means being of tapering formation, the wider end being adjacent the folding rolls, to permit the collar to temporari ly curl after passing between the folding rolls.
20. In a collar folding machine, the combination with an i-roner, folding mechanism coiiperating with the ironer, a guide for guiding collars to the folding mechanism, a chamber, withdrawing means which on gage the folded collar before the folding mechanism releases it, and a platform intermediate the guide and the chamber to receive thefolded collar.

31. In a collar folding and shaping machine, in combination a drying chamber, a heated ironing roll for ironing the fold of a collar, andfolding means intermediate the chamber and the ironing roll, the collar being dried in said chamber after being folded.
32. In a collar shaping and folding ma chine, in combination, a guide to engage the inside of a collar, revolving folding means, means for ironing the folded edge of the collar separate from the folding means, a revolving curling means separate from the revolving folding means, and means for guiding'the collar from the folding means to the curling means, said means including two substantially vertical walls arranged at anangle to the guide, the space formed between the two walls being tapered from the folding means toward the curling means.
38. In a collar folding and shaping machine, the combination with an ironer, guiding means located adjacent the ironer, folding means, a heated chamber, and curling means consisting of two tapered rolls one of which is formed with a shoulder.
34. In a collar folding and shaping machine, the combination of heated folding mechanism, a heated roll for ironing the top fold .of .a collar, a heated drying. chamber located adjacent the heated foldingmechanism and into which the collar passes from said rolls, and means located at the exit end of said: chamber for withdrawing the collar therefrom.
35. In a collar shaping and folding machine in. combination, means under pressure for ironingthe folded edge of a collar, means for curling a collar and a chamber open at both ends and closed on the four sides for guiding a collar to the curling means.
36. In a collar shaping and folding machine, the combination with guiding means, folding means, means for ironing the folded edge of the collar, curling means including a pair of rolls, and a chamber located between said rolls and the folding means.
37. In combination, means for folding a collar, means for ironing the top of the collar, means for placing said latter means under pressure during the ironing operation, a chamber, and means separate from the ironing and folding means for curling the folded collar.
38. In a collar folding machine, the combination with mechanism for ironing the folded edge of a collar, folding mechanism, a tapering drying chamber the larger end of which is adjacent the folding means, said chamber comprising several members, one of said members being bent to form a base, another member being independently supported adjacent the first mentioned member, and means for heating said drying chamber.
39. In a collar folding and shaping machine the combination with a roll for ironing the fold of a collar, guiding means, folding means, a heated chamber, and two rolls for curling the collar after it leaves the heated chamber.
40. In acollar folding and shaping machine, the combination with a guide, a heated collar edge ironing roll cooperating with the guide, yielding means for forcing the roll toward the guide, folding rolls, a chamber, and means for withdrawing a collar from the chamber.
ll. In a collar folding and shaping machine, the combination with yielding means for ironing the fold of a collar, folding means, a chamber, and curling means for curling the collar.
