This collar is engaged by one arm of a bell crank lever 28, the other arm being detachably connected to the core of a solenoid 29 preferably so connected with the circuit of the solenoid 18 as to be controlled by the make example the ho ok may be formed with a cam 33, which as the core is shifted, will move along an abutment 34 and after a predetermined movement of the lever cause the hook to be shifted from engagement with the pin 32. In order to keep the clutch members in engagement with each other after the hook has been shifted the collar 27 is provided with a lug 35, which, while the clutch members are separated, will eX- tend into a recess in a bearing36 of the shaft 11. One wall of the recess is inclined as shown in Fig. 5 and as soon as the clutch members engage and the collar 27 begins to rotate the lug 35 will move along, the inclined wall of the-recess moving the clutch members into further engagement, in which position they are held against the pull of the spring 37 by the bearing of the lug against the end of the bearing 36 of the shaft. After the clutch has made a revolution and the lug comes opposite therecess, the clutch members willbe pulled apart by the spring 37. The angular movement imparted to the twisting head by one revolution of the shaft 11 can be regulated suitably proportioning the earing interposed between the shaft and the head. I
Thejaws will grip the bar until the rear end of the latter has passed beyond the dog 23, which automatically drops permitting the make and break 21 to open and the solenoid to become denergized. The lever 17 will then be shifted by the spring 25 and,
open the jaws of the twisting head. It will be observed that dog 23 is located sucha distance in front of the rolls, that after the jaws have been opened the rolls will continue to feed the bar sufficiently far to move the portion twisted before the jaws were opened, beyond the jaws and into the-larger axial opening through the twisting head and its 1 journal.
' In lieu of employing a rotatable head with jaws having their gripping portions corresponding to the cross-sectional contour of the bar, the jaws may have their surfaces twisted or spirally formed with a pitch corresponding to that of the twist desired in the bar, as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. In
such a construction the head 7 is non rotatably supported between the forks or arms 38. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the inner ends of the jaws or slides 14 are made fiat so as to bear uniformly on the sides of the bar. In the construction shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the inner faces of the jaws 39 are spirally formed.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the twist is formed in the bar, between the jaws 14:, and the inner or holding portion of the guide 20 and the pitch of the twist given the bar is dependent on the angular movement of the head after the bar is gripped and the distance between the jaws and the inner or holding portion of the and should be opened before'the bar has passed frombetween the rolls, hence only the controlling contacts 21 and their operating dog 23 are required.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. The combination of a rotatable head, jaws movably mounted in the head, rolls arranged to force the bar between the aws, and means controlled by the barin its movements for shifting the aws.
2. The combination of a rotatable head, jaws movably mounted in the head, rolls arranged to force the bar, between the jaws, and means intermediate the rolls and head and controlled bythebar in its movement for shifting the jaws.
3. In an apparatus for twisting bars, the
combination of a rotatable head, aws movably mounted in the head, rolls arranged to feed a bar between the jaws, and means for opening the jaws arranged in front of the rolls and adapted to be controlled by the bar. r r
' at. The combination of a rotatable head, jaws movably mounted in the head, rolls arranged to force the bar between the aws and means controlled by the bar in its movement for turning the head and shifting the aws. p
In testimony whereof I have hereunto-set my hand.
