WILLIAM W. CLARK, on PORTLAND, ionneomnssrenort or orTnHALr 'ro IRVING :r.
', BOYCE, or PORTLAND, OREGON.
' 'rnonnnmrorin.
To all whom it may concern i Y Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CL K, a citizen of the United "States, residing 'at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregomhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Poles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trolleys that are adapted to be applied to electric cars and like vehicles, and has for its object to provide means for keeping the trolley-wheel in constant contact with the conductor at all times while in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind that is simple in construction, durable, efficient in action,
- 17 are provided at polnts intermediate arms and inexpensive in manufacture.
WVith these and other. useful objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and specifically claimed.
In order to fully comprehend my invention and the art to which it relates, ref-. erence is made to the accompanying drawing, which, taken in connection with the specification forms this application, and of which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of a modified form of swivel; a novel form of base would be required with this structure.
Now referring to the drawing (in which like characters of reference indicate like parts), the numeral 2 indicates a swivel to which is integrally fastened transverse arms 3, rest 4, and rod 5 inthe modified form as shown in Fig. 3. Pivoted to said swivel is p a trolley-pole 6 by means of pin 7, while said swivel is revolubly mounted to the roof of a car (represented by line 8) by means of a stud 9, which stud also passes through base 10 to which is attached a revolving-pole 11; said revolving-pole serving as a means of turning trolley-pole 6 around to the reverse end of a car; this revolving-pole, however, is only used when a single trolley-pole is attached to a car, and obviously, is unnecessary when a trolley-pole is attached to each end.
Pivotally fastened to the free end of trolley-pole 6, is a harp 12 which serves as i Specification of Letters Patent.
. bearing means'for sheave 13 which contacts noted by observing Figs. 1 and 2 that harp 12 has a semicircular plate 14: extending from the lower portion thereof which serves as a bearing means for the trolley-pole andwhich also adds strength to said harp. F astened also to said harp are arms 15, from which pass guide-wires 16 to' arms 3; said guide-wires serving to hold sheave 13v in longitudinal alinement with-the conductor when trolleypole 6 is at an angle with relation'to roof 8', these guide-wires being of great utility when the car is turning a curve. In order to brace said guide-wires, sleeves 3 and 15 respectively; said sleeves being integrally fastened to socket 18 which is rigidly secured to trolley-pole 6.
In Fig. 2 is shown a hook 19 secured to roof 8, and serves to prevent lateral movement of revolving-pole 11, while said revolving-pole has attached thereto another hook 20 to engage loop 21 in trolley-pole 6 when said trolley-pole is pulled downwardly by means of cord 22. The front end of the swivel has attached thereto the ordinary form of rods 23, which rods extend through apertures in plate 23*. I provide, moreover, a fixed head 24: on the base 10 against which thrusts one end of the spring 24, the other end of the spring thrusting against the plate 23. In order to adjust the stretch of the spring, I provide a bolt 24 extending to the plate 28* and nut 25 on the outer end of the bolt.
It will be seen from the foregoing that any slight downward movement of the pole 6 will move the left end of the swivel 2 upwardly and to the right, thus increasing the stretch on the spring 2& which conse- 7 Patented Sept. '7, 1915. Application filed February 16, 1914. 'Scrial No. 819,115. i
quently resists more strongly and holds the pole in the position shown except when it is binations of elements considered essential in materializing the same, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may be fairly considered to lie within the scope and purview of Having thus fully described my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it relates may be enabled to construct and use the same, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a swivel, of a trolley-pole, means'to attach said swivel to a car, a harp pivoted to the free end of the trolley-pole,bearing means in said harp, a sheave mounted on said bearing means, and
positively acting devices to aline the harp with a conductor, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a swivel, of
means to attach said swivel to the roof of a car, a trolley-pole pivotedto said swivel and arms passing transversely of saidswivel, a harp pivoted to the free end of said trolleypole, bearing. means in said harp, and a sheave revolubly mountedon said bearing, transverse arms at the upper side, of said harp, Wires passing from said arms to. the arms ofthe swivel, said wires serving to Copies of this patent may be obtained for aline the sheave with a conductor, and means to revolve thetrolley pole onthe'roof of the car, substantially as described.
3. The a combination with a swivel, of means to attach. said swivel to a car, arms transversely attached to said swivel, a trolley-pole pivotally mounted in said swivel, a harp pivoted to the free end of said trolleypole,'a rest'at the lower side of said harp and transverse arms at the upper side, a sheave revolubly mounted in said harp, guide-wires passing from the arms of the harp to, the arms of the'swivel, sleeves intermediate said arms to brace the guide-wires, means to: support said sleeves attached to the tro11ey-p0le,,and means to raise and lower said trolley-pole, substantially as described. In. testimony that'I claim the foregoing as my own, I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
