My invention has for its object tov provide an extremely simple and highly "eliicient boring machine adapted for `use to boreout engine cylinders, and to such ends, gen-v erally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of. devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
Particularly, Vmy invention has for its object toprovide a cylinder boring machine of small cost, for use inrepair shops, and which may be operated either by hand or by machine power, and by the use ofwhich, old or used cylinders may be very quickly and cheaply bored out and trued up by a cutting tool, rather than by the use of a grinding machine. In practice, a grinding machine has been found very unsatisfactory for truing up engine cylinders, because the emery or carborundum dust becomes embeded in the minute poresof the cast metal, and

provide vfor .rotating said shafts by hand, the feed shaft 11 is provided at itsouter end with an operating crank 12 and to provide for driving said shafts by machine jpower, a beveled gear 13'is applied on the shaft6 between the bearings 3 and 4, and the hub of the said gear 13 is provided with a key 14 that works in a long longitudinal groove 15 of the boring shaft 6. A pinion i 16 meshes with the gear 13 and is secured to the inner end ofa shaft 17 journaled in a bearing 18 andprovided at its outer end with a driving pulley 19. The bearing 18 is shown as rigidly secured to and projecty ing from the bearing 3. Y
The front end of the bed-plate or frame 1 is planed true vertically, and an alining plate, or face plate, 20 is secured thereto, preferably by bolts 21 and dowel pins 22. This alining plate 20 is provided with a large circular opening 23 that is adapted to receive the` end fin y of the engine cylinder y1. It is customary to provide engine` cylinders with these fins y, but where they are not provided, the cylindersmust -be otherwise axially alined with the boring shaft 6. The said cylinders are adapted to be secured to the alining plate 20 by bolts, clamps or any of the well known devices used for such purposes. y
The use of the improved boring machine is probably obvious, but may be briefly stated as follows: When the 'cylinder is properly secured on the alining plate, the
cutting tool 8 is positioned just outside of the cylinder, ready to enter the same, and then by lrotating the shafts 6-11, by hand or by machine power, the cutting tool will be rotated and advanced spirally, so as to prol may be accomplishedisimply by loosening` lShaft 11 i f j ducethefproperboringaction.
