Description

I. R. HICKS.
PRIMING SPARK PLUG.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 11. 1914.
Patnted Aug. 31, 1915.
- lq;' the holl w y 3 f P nary; onstruction. The outer end of the 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
131: R. HICKS, 0F HALLSVILLE; MJESSOURI.
To all whom'z't'may concern Be it known that I, IRL R. HICKS, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Halls- I ville, in the county of 5; Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming Spark- Plugs, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to spark plugs for lifl iuternal combustion engines and more particularly to'a combined spark plug and priming device for feeding liquid fuel directly to v the combustion chamber of the engine. An object of the invention is the provision at of a hollow central electrode for conducting the liquid fuel tothe spark gap of the plug. Another object is the provision of a novel type'of needle valve adapted to cooperate with. the end of the hollow electrode to close 0 the opening through the latter and consti- 'tuting, when'in closed position, a lock insuring against looseningof the terminal en- .39. 'ng nuts of the plug.
.5 %ith. these and other objects in view, the
215; invention consists in the novel construction,
f. arixlilan ement and combination of parts as w claimed an'dillustrated' in the accompany- Zing drawings, in which the figure represents .a longitudinal central sectional view through a spark plug constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate cor- 36' responding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a fragment of a cylinder of the internal combustion engine type having a threaded opening 6 therethrough for receiving the threaded end 7 of ark plug of ordibody 8 is referably formed with a hexagonal nut w ereby the plug maybe quickly and conveniently'removed by the application Y 'thereto of a Suitable; Wrench A core ormed of porcelain orother insulating marial is provided with an annular enlargent 10 adapted to' engage the shoulder PRIMING SPARK-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Boone and State of e hereinafter s'pecifically described,.
formed internally and centrally of the body 5o tioned within the body 8 and is engaged of the plug; A threaded sleeve 11 is POSI- against the annular enlargement 10 to lock the porcelain core'9 against removal. An electrode 12 is secured to the threaded endof the body and iscurved inwardly toward the center thereof. 7
Thecentral electrode 13 of the plug is sethe point 18 normally spaced from the elec- I trode 12 to provide a spark gap 19.. .A nut 20 is threaded on the end of the electrode 13 and adapted to cooperate with the nut 14 to secure the electrical connection for the center electrode 13 in position. l
A priming cup 21is formed in V 11y Batented Aug. 31, 1915.
Application filed April 17, 1 914. Serial no. 832,611; l
cured centrally within the porcelain core 9 with the nut 20 and communicates wit the threaded here through said nut. A needle valve 22 is positioned in the threaded opening of the cup and the pointed end 23 thereof is adapted to be seated in the flared-end 1 16 of the opening 15 to close communication through the latter. The valve 22 is formed with a longitudinal groove 24 adapted to permit gasolene or other liquid fuel to flow from the priming cup 21 into the hollow electrode 13 when the valve 22 is 0 en. A
suitable head 25 is preferably forme on the closed end of the valve 22 whereby the same may be conveniently manipulated.
What I claim is A spark plug including a body, a central electrode secured in said body projecting outwardly of the inner and outer ends of the latter having external screw-threads and a longitudinal opening therethrough, a nut threaded on the outer exposed end of said electrode of greater length than said exposleld end,--a priming cup formed integral wit said nut and communicating with the v threa'ded bore thereof, a screw threaded In testimony whereof I afiix my signature needle valve fitted in said nut having a 1011- in presence of two Witnesses.
gitudinal groove and adapted to cooperate with the outer extremity of said central IRL HICKS n5 electrode to close the longitudinal opening Witnesses:
in the latter, and a head carried by the outer H. BISHOP CHANGE, extremityof said valve. V I O. G. PALMER.
