Description

CONRAD H EUBAC H. Improvement in Presses for 'F ini'shin g Cloth, &c. No, 115,203 PatentedMay23,I871-.
PATENT \QFFIGE.
CONRAD HEUBAOH, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
f I IMPROVEMENT m PRESSES FOR FINISHING CLOTH, &c.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. 115,203, dated May 23, 1871. Y
faces withjrnetal, as hereinafter explained.
In the drawing,iFigure l is a side elevation of my press partly in section. 7
As is well known, for hot pressing, hot iron plates are inserted between the folds of the cloth at intervals. [The cloth is then piled up in the press andsubjected to an intense pressure, which is maintained until the plates become cold. It is then taken out and folded in such a way that the creases of former folds may come opposite'the flat faces and be removed at the second pressure. This process is used by dyersl for pressing and heating articles fresh dyed in order to give a bright satiny appearance. I
My press is for the purpose of accomplishing similar results without the use of the hot plates, and is constructed of a strong frame, A, consisting of two uprights, B and O, at tached to a bed-piece, D,.at their lower ends, and withv a cross beam, E, connecting their upper ends. The inner faces of the uprights B are provided with vertical grooves 00, shown in dotted lines, and between them a head, F,
is arranged so as to move vertically by means of a screw, G, connected loosely to it, and turning in a nut or in threads in the crossbeam E for that purpose. The bed or bottom D and the head F are made hollow, and the hollow space is divided by partitions into chambers, the partitions serving to make the whole solid and strong. The opposing faces of the bottom and head are covered with copper or other metal when made of wood. The hollow spaces are provided with short pipes e, orother devices for connection with, any steam-generating apparatus suitable for introducing steam, and thus heating the opposite pressing-surfaces.
- In operating the press thus constructed for finishing freshdyed articles, the pressing heads are first heated with steam, as above described, then the articles that have been dyed are placed between them and subjected to great pressure by means of the screw G, and the desired luster given to them. In this way what is known as the hot pressure is ap plied without the use of the hot plates.
Having thus described my invention, What.
I claim is A press for finishing cloth, consisting of the frame A with a hollow bottom or bed, D, and hollow follower F, and screw G, the Whole constructed and arranged to operate substan tially as herein described.
