JET APEABATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent s gpliczi'tion filed June 25), 1911. Serial No. 636,062.
Be it known chat I, Amuzsm if. l isciiuu, a subject of the. Emperor of Germany, residing: in the city and county of Philadeb phiu, in the State of Fennsylvcnia, have invented a certain new and useful Linn-ovemerit in Jet Apparatus, of which the followin is a true and exact description, reference being radio the cccoinininying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My present invention relates 4:0 jet sponruius and. has for its main object the pro- YlSlOIl of :2 simple and effective jet device having :1 Plllizlllifi of orifices formed and. disposed that the fluid passing through these orifices at highvclocity issues therefrom in the form of a ,olurnlii of scpar to chin 'lizii Streams. lily improvement, while not limited to such use, is particularly valuable for use in ammrzitus cuiployed for exhausting air or other 5521s from 21 chamber or space by the action. of jets of air, sfiezuu or water discharged into 1r conduit leading away from said chamber or space.
The various features novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part oi this specification.
For a better understanding of the inven tion, however, and the purposes accomolished and advantages obtained b lizS use I 1 3 reference should be hzid so the accompanyii'ig drawings and descriptive matter in which Ihave illustrated and desc ibcd a. pro ferred form of apparatus en'ibodying my invention. l
()1? due drawings, Figure 1 mean-Se;-
tional elevation of an exhaustapparatus-iu I which'my invention is utilized. 2 is a sectional elevation of the jel; nozzle head employed in 1, the section being taken on the line Zr-2 of Fig. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the jet nozzle head. Fig. 4 is ii'plan View of the jei, nozzle proper. 5 is an enlarged partizil section taken on the In the apparatus shown in ifi 1, E, represents a conduit forming the mixing charm bar and discharge pipe er en exhausting spperatus. As shown, said conduit is closed at one end by e heedjil through which extends the jet supply pipe D delivering the impelling fluid, usually Water, but which Fi I hon-like jet described 6 is c section may heair, steam, or other fluid. under presdischnrged in axial jets or streams at high m, velocity. in represents a. branch pipe opei'b ing to the conduit from thcclnnubcr or sure, to the jct. 11 zzle A, from which it is at E. in so far as above-described the zipparutus disclosed does not differ essentially from the ammrutus heretofore known, but the smmrarus disclosed does differ from that heretoforeknown. however, in the character of the jet nozzlc heud A.
As shown, ihc jet nozzle head A comprises u cuirshuped body having a central discharge orifice A adapted to he ihreaded on to the end of the jet supply pipe D. At its base this body member is formed with a seat A for the jet orifice member B. The member 1: as shown is in the shape'of a. flat disk and is secured in place by the ring nut C in threaded engagement with 'the flangetrated, each jet orifice B is formcdyby trans-- verse narrow grooves or slots l3 and B which are formed'in the opposite sides of member B and intersecting at their hottoins at B With a scribed the shape non of the orifice or the character deill charge end porthe slot B and also 'zhc direction c vflow the central orifice portion 3*, given. she fluid passing through the crifice'by the Walls of the slot B contribute to the production of the ribpractical e'dvsnmge of in this manner is that the slots 3'' end B may be readily formed by e inillisg ouster or other rotating metal cussing tooL A iet orifice member having a single orifice formed in it as described, while novel with me, is not claiired herein, as it forms lillB subject matter illustrated. A. forming the orifice a of my prior copending application, Serial No. lilliliill, filed January 12, 3911.
The jet orifices should he so arranged that 'oi. the orifices tangential,
v known to, me,
the jets do not intersect each other in immediate prtzinnity to the et orifice member B. To accomplish this in the apparatus disclosed herein, the discharge orifices B in the disk B are arranged in concentric circular rows with the discharge portions 13 or practically 'o, to these rows, and the orifices in adjacent rows do "not lie along the same radial lines. The apparatus described is particularly advantageous when the spray nozzle is employed in exhaust apparatus of the general type shown in the drawings. In such apparatus the extent to which the jet or impelling-flu'id acts upon and sets in motion the fluid iii-the conduit or chamber into which the jet discharges is to alarge extent a'function of the extent of surface of the jet streams and is due to the friction, so to speak, between the skin of the jet streams and the surrounding fluid. The apparatus disclosed obviously on account of the thin ribbon-like form ofthe jets presents a large jet stream area in proportion to the cross sectional area -25,
fjet flow into a apart streams permits of these jet streams, and the division of the plurality of separate spaced upon to flow freely around and into contact with the various jets soy that bubbles or globules hi? the fluid acted upon are enfmeshed so to speak in the jet materialand have the desired velocity imparted to them. While in accordance with the, provisions of the statutes I have illustrated and described the best form of my invention now it-will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of the apparatusdisclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention, and that under some conditions, it may be advantageous to use certain features of the invention Without acorresponding use of other features I slaving now described my invention, What said disk in place, said in it a plurality of spaced apart jet orifices the fluid operated side of said disk" an I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s: 1
1. A. et nozzle member having formed in it which terminate at the discharge surface of said member in narrow elongated slots and comprise also narrow elongated slots leading away .troin the inlet surface of sald member and each extending a plurallty of spaced apart discharge orifices transversely to and intersecting the slot in i corresponding the wall of the chamber in saidbody portion and means for detachably securing disk having formed arranged in concentric circular rows and each comprising an outlet end portion in the form ,of aenarrow elongated slot and an.
inlet endport'ion ofithe form of a narrow elongated slot, transverse to said outlet'end portion and intersecting the latter.
A nozzle comprising a chambered body portion, a disk forming a portion of the wall of the chamber in said body portion and means for detachably securing the disk in place, said disk having formed in it a plurality of jet orifices arranged in concentric circular rows and each comprising an outlet portion "in the form of a narrow elongated slot "openinfl from the discharge a narrow elongated slot opening from the inlet side of the disk and extending transversely to the first mentioned elongated slot and intersecting the latter, the inlet portions of the various orifices being substantially radial to the center of said disk.
