Be it known that I, HENRY WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented. certain new vand useful lImprovements in. Adjustable Guides for Stapling and Riveting Machines, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in attachments for stapling, riveting and wirestitching machines and is designed to provide a means whereby the work may be fed and guided vdirectly through the machine in such a manner that the over-lapping edges thereof may be properlyv located.
In the manufacture of boxes or cartons the edges thereof are overlapped and are riveted or stitched together, the under edge beingl provided with a flap, the standard width of which is substantially 1.1; inches, said flap being separated from the body of the carton by acrease or score which hinges the flap to said body. It will, therefore, be seen that it is essential that the upper edge of the overlapping edges must terminate at ,the crease or score as aforesaid, in order that the same may perform its function,'. e., form a hinge connectionbetween the sections of the carton connected by the overlapping edges. Although the standard widthof the flaps heretofore mentioned is 1% inches, the saine varies considerably and it is therefore, necessary to provide an adjustable guide whereby theupper edge of the overlapping edges may be located in such a manner that the same will terminate adjacent to the creaseorscore aforesaid. i
It is the object of the present invention to provide such an adjustable guide, thus linsuring accuracy in the overlapping the edges andv insuring a machine which will stitch said overlapping edges without interfering with or detracting from the functions of the score or crease.
Furthermore, this invention contemplates the construction of such an adjustable guide heretofore referred to, and inaddition thereto, the provision of auxiliaryguides which will insure the movement of the carton or box from the guide under the stitching or stapling head in such a manner thatk the passage of said carton or box will in no way tons lor boxes,
after more beobstructed.' These auxiliary guides are also adapted to prevent the kcarton or cardboard, or material of which the carton or boxv is constructed from curling upward on lclontiacting with the stitching or stapling With the above and other kobjects in view this vinvention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and Villustrated in the annexed drawings wherein..r j p Figure 1 is amfragmentary top plan view of the'work table of a stapling or riveting machine, illustrating the improved feed guide `forming the subject tmatter of the present invention. rIhe guide forming the subject matter of the present invention, comprises an adjustable attachment of the guide forming the subject matter of my pending application ledFebruary 7th, 1912, Serial No. 676090, and constitutes a guide plate carried by said guide rand arranged at an acute angle there- 'to,. said, guide plate being movable horizontallyv over said guide referred to.
Reference being made more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the table of a wirev stitching or st apling machine particularly adapted to use in connection with carsaid table being pierced medially by the anvil bar 11. Superposed above the anvil bar 11, is a head 12, of any suitable or standard construction, said head adapted to be alined with the guide hereinfullydescribed at all times. The head l12 is in most circumstances supported and carried by a goose neck (not shown), said goose necklikewise carrying a supporting frame 13 which carries a horizontal plate 14, which rests parallel to the table 10.

rva vertical bracket 15, whichterminates at its lower' end in a horizontally arranged portion 16, said-horizontally arranged portion being pivoted between the uprights 17, formed-on or otherwise secured to a horizontal web 18. The outer edge of this horihontal web terminates a vertical web 19, said vertical web connecting the horizontal web 18 to a work supporting guide bar 20, which 1s reduced in width as at 21 adjacent` to the head 12, said reduced portion terminating in an anvil 22 which is supported above and coincides with the anvilbar 11.
It will therefore, be seen that the guide heretofore described, is slightly pivoted on the horizontal portion of the bracket 15 in order that the reduced portion 21 and the anvil 22 carried thereby may be provided with a slight movement. Y
All of the foregoing construction is re-i :forming the subject matter of the present invention may be adjusted to and from the bracket 15 as hereinafter more fully' described. v
A plate 26 is secured to the bracket 23 by means of an elongated lug or projection 27 formed on said plate which is reciprocatingly and adjustably received in slot 25 of the bracket 23. rlhe plate 26 is secured to the underside vof the bracket 23 andy the upper edge of the projection or lug 27 rests flush with the upper surface of the bracket 23. |This lug or projection l27 carries a threaded spindle 28, upon which is mounted a lock nut 29, said lock nut being provided with a handle or operating member 30.y The lock nut operates upon the upper surface of the bracket 23, and it will be seen that as the same is threaded downwardly upon the spindle or shank 28, the plate 26 will be f drawn upwardly thereby rigidly securing the same in its adjusted position.
The bracket 23 being arranged in such a manner that the plane thereof vis at an acute angle to the horizontal plane, it is obvious that the plate 26 will likewise be retained at a similar angle. The forward end of the platef26 is narrowed and is of substantially the same width as the work supporting and guiding bar 20, while its rear terminal is flared or belled as at 31/to1increase the ease with which the material or work may be inserted under the plate 26 as heretofore described.
The inner edge of the plate 26, z'. e., the side thereof adjacent to the uprights 17 and bracket 15 is bent downwardly to form a guiding flange 32. Inasmuch as the terminal 36 of the carton 39 must abut against` or rest adjacent tothe scoring 37 the plate 26 is so adjusted that the flange 32thereof will be located above edge ofthe the scoring 37 thus locating the terminal 36 adjacent to said scoring.

1. In combination, two substantially kparallel work-supporting plates, aguideflange on one plate near one-edge thereof, anda guide flange adjacent kthe opposite edge of the other plate and adjustable towardand from the first said guide flange, the'remaining edges of both said plates being unobstructed.v

A worky guide, comprising an upper plate and a flower plate' substantiallyr parallel 130 with one another, a guide flange positioned near one edge of the lower plate, the other edges of said plate being unobstructed, a guide member positioned over the upper plate and having a guide flange adjacent said upper plate and near the edge of said plate opposite the first mentioned guide flange, the other edges of said plate being unobstructed, and means for adjusting the last said guide ange toward and from the rst said guide iange. n'
4. A work guide, comprising an upper plate and a lower plate substantially parallel with one another, a guide flange positioned near one edge of the lower plate, the other edges of said plate being unobstructed, a guide member positioned over the upper plate and having a guide flange adjacent said upper plate and near the edge of said plate opposite the iirst mentioned guide flange, the other edges of said plate being unobstructed, means for adjusting the last said guide liange toward and from the first said guide flange, and means for supporting said work guide, attached to the upper plate at the side of the plate, near the upper guide flange.
5. A guide for stapling and riveting machines comprising in combination, a bracket, a horizontal extension formed on said bracket, a horizontal web secured to said extension, a guide bar, a vertical web connecting said guide bar to said horizontal web, a secondary bracket secured to said rst bracket, and a secondary guide adjustably secured to said secondary bracket and superposed above said horizontal web, said secondary guide having a vertical guiding flange formed adjacent to the primary bracket and adjustable to and from the vertical web aforesaid.
