NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. A Y
LOUIS BRUIDICK, 0F REDBURN, PENNSYLVANIA.
rev BOAT.
Application filed February 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs BRUDICK, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Redburn, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toy boats.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy boat in the form of a canoe andwhere,
in there is provided a clock mechanism associated with a figure mounted in the boat, and wherein the clock mechanism isadapted to "move the figure to create the impression that the boat is propelled thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy boat in the form ofa canoe and having pivotally mounted therein a figure toy which is moved by the clock mechanism carried by the boat and wherein the device is simple in construction and. inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of partsto be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed. In the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of the pres-.
ent invention and to which reference is had herein by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a toy boat built in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line IIII of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the connecting mechanism arranged between the driving mechanism and the provertical shafts 15 and 16 journaled Within Specification of Letters Patent.

the housing 13 while the shaft 15 extends through the cover 1% and is provided with a squared end 17 for the reception of a key by which the same may be revolved. A cas-v ing 18 incloses the lower end of the shaft 15 and houses a band spring, one end of which 18 secured to the said casing, while the other 7 end is secured to the shaft. A gear wheel 19 is carried by the upper wall of the casing 18, the same being fixed to the shaft 15 and is in mesh with the lantern gear 20 on the.
shaft 16. ,A. gear wheel 21 is connected to the lantern gear 20 and is in mesh with the lantern gear 22 on the other shaft 16, while the gear 22 has connected thereto the fly wheel 23. It will therefore be seen that when the shaft 15 is revolved by the spring within the casing 18, vibration will be minimized by the balance wheel 23 through the meshing gears as described.
The upper side edges of the boat 10, carry oar-locks 2 through which extend the oars 25 and the connecting mechanism between the oars and the clock mechanism is shown in detail in Fig. 3. This connecting mechanism includes oppositely-disposed bell crank levers 26 pivoted as at 27 to the sides ofthe boat 10 while one leg of the bell crank is connected at its end as at28 to the lower end ofthe link 29, the upper end of the link being connected as at 30 to the oar 25. A.
bell crank lever and link 29 is carried by each side of the boat while the lower ends of thebell cranks 26 extend through the opening 31 in the deck 12 and into the space 32 betweenthe deck and the bottom of the boat.
The lower ends are connected by the horizontal rod 33, which rod has a pitman connection'34 with the crank shaft 35, the upper end 36 of which is connected to the power shaft 15 in any suitable manner, asillustrated in Fig. 1, whereby the crank 35 maybe revolved to impart a rotary motion to the'oars 25 through the connecting mechanism as above described, to createthe impression that the figure is propelling the boat, the oars being elevated by the bell crank levers 26 and receiving a substantial rowing motion. The lower end 37 of the operatingcrank 35 is connected to one end of the link 38, while the other end of the link is connected to an arm 39 mounted in the guide 10 carried by the bottom of the deck 12, .and all positioned within the space 32.
A movable figure 41 is associated with the operating mechanism and is pivoted as at 42 between the side wall of the boat and has a downwardly projecting leg 43 passing through an opening in the deck 12 and is connected at its lower end as at td to the arm 39. A casing L5 is arranged within said opening and incloses a pair of compression springs 46 adapted to engage each 4 side of the leg e3 as indicated in Fig. 2, so
lland project forwardly and engage the oars inorder to create the impression that the figure within the boat is operating the oars to propel the boat.
It is believed that the operation of the device will be readily apparent, the clock mechanism within the casing 13 rotating the crank shaft 35, which in turn operates the bell crank 26 and link 29 to reciprocate the oars 25, while the lower end of the -figure is connected to the lower end 87 0f the crank shaft, and the crank shaft being off-set as shown in SldB GlBVittlOIl'lll Fig. 1, further posltivelyimoves the figure on ts pivot point." Asabove stated, the springs 46 cushion the leg 43 and relieve the figure 41 of undue jerkymovement.
While I have shown and described the. preferred embodiment of the present invention, Ido not wish to confine myself to the exact detailsof construction'shown, as vari ous forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts as shown may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
WVhat I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a boat, a figure pivotally mounted in said boat, clock mechanism within the boat, a crank shaft driven bysaid clock mechanism, connecting means between the crank shaft and the lower end of said figure,
, oars carried by the boat, and connected to the upper end of said figure, and connecting means between the crank shaft and oars adapted to impart a rotary rowingmotion to the oars.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a boat, a housing within the boat, a clock mechanism within the housing, a pair of hell cranks arranged on opposite sides of the boat, links carried by one end of the bell cranks, oars connected to the other end of said links, a horizontal arm connect ing the lower ends of said bell cranks, a crank shaft operatively connected to said clock mechanism, a link connection between said crank shaft and horizontal arm, a figure pivotally mounted in said boat, the arms of said'figure being connected to said oars, a depending leg carried by said figure, and
connecting means between the lower end of said leg and crank shaft. In testimony whereof I ffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
