This invention relates to what-is known as rock-cutting apparatus, that is, apparatus for breaking up or cutting rocks-boulders,- stones, or hardened earth, oricombinati-ons of earth and stone, either under water or'l'on dry land. Such apparatus-is usually em ployed in conjunction-with, or as aH allXlll-' ary to,- a dredging. plant :when formingor deepening rivers, canals,- channels, harbors, and other water ways, and also for breaking up or disintegrating-the ground when niak-f ingexcavationswon dry land fornallway foundations and other formationsand struc= tures; I In apparatus of this kiridit-i's usual to employ: one or more rock cutters, which may weigh froni 5 to 25 tons or so and it has been the general :piactice, heretofore, to suspendthe heavy cutter by meansbf 1a single-Wire rope which passes over a pulley on a sheer legs structure and is secured to the barrel of a hoisting. winch which latter is operated-by power In the past, considerable trouble and expense has been occasioned throughtheheavy cutter, when suspended by the rope, spinning around'to a greater orv less extentand, in so doing, opening out and fraying the strands of the wire rope with the result that it soon breaks and requires to be repaired or renewed. To resist the'spin ning; action as much as possible so called non spinning ropes have been employed but such arrangements, while being costly, only partially meet the diificulty. For many years I have carried out experiments with the vie-wof providing a form of suspension bvhiehwill prevent the opening out and fraying of. the wire ropes, thereby obviating the-employment of expensive non-spinning ropes and, at last, I have invented an arrangement which is not only simple but is very effective and which enables wire ropes of sufficient strength to be used without danger of the same being rapidly destroyed as heretofore. By-means of this invention the cost of cutting or breaking up rocks will be verymaterially reduced.
The invention consists in suspending the Orr-ether arrangements cutter by'n eans of a single wire rope of the required strength and this rope is arranged insucha'way'that it forms a double and balanced suspension for the rock cutter. With this double suspension I find that the strands oftherope, even although it is not a; non ispinning rope, are not opened out and frayed by the movements oi the cutter as heretofore,- while the spinning motion of the cutter is also checked more or less. In order-thatthe invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended explanatory drawings Wlie-reon I have shown, simply byway of illustration or example, one? convenient mode of carrying out the invention in connection with a rock cutting vessel such as. used when deepening canals and harbors.

In carrying out the invention according to the arrangement shown on the drawings, the wire-rope 1 is passed over a bollard portion-.3 formed on one end of the barrel 5 of the=hoistingwinch b and then its one end 1 is led around a half bollard portion 2 and itsother end 1 is led around a second half bollard portion 4:, these portions being also formed on the barrel, and then bothends 1, 1", are wound side by side around the barrel =(-see Fig.3) lying in grooves 6 there on and, thereafter, the ends are led up and over the pulleybcb on the usual sheer legs structure and down, side by side, to the cutter to-which the ends are secured by: pass- "eiiig tliem into a circular opening 7 in the cutter and then clamping them in position by means of clampsB, 9, tightened up by barrel of the hoisting screws 10. With this arrangement, by operating the Winch, the cutter can be raised and lowered in the usual way and as the rope ends are connected,isideby side, and at ashort -dis-' tancevfromfone another they tend to lessen or prevent the spinning around of the cut-- ter. Any spinning that does take placemerely tends to twist the rope ends .(above the connection with the cutter) about one another. i .'Having now fully described my invention what I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patentis:- a l 1. In rock cutting apparatus the combination with a rock cutter and a winch. with winch barrel for raising and lowering same, of a double rope suspension consisting of a single rope which passes" around bollard pdrtions on-the winch barrel and :hasits ends secured side by side to the top ofithe rock cutter.

In rock cutting apparatus the combination with a rock cutter and a winch with winch barrel for raising and lowering'same, of a double rope suspension consistingfof a single rope which passes around "bollard portions, one of circular formation and the other two of semicircular formation, on the winch barrel and has its ends secured side by side to the top of the rock cutter;

In rock cutting apparatus the combination with a rock cutter and a winch with winch barrel for raising and lowering same, of ardouble rope suspension consisting of a single ropewhich passes around the winch barrel and has its ends secured'side by side to the "top' of the rock cutter, the ends being inserted in an opening in the cutter and secured by clamping means.
